Is it just me or is justin playing some sick ass bass across this whole album? I mean he was always good but it was never anything that made me say "holy shit" out loud.
listen to the bass riff on this song [10,000 Days (Wings pt. 2)] at 8:00 and on.
It's almost like funky O.o It sounds like hes slapping and popping. Anyway in my opinion the bass lines on this whole album are just fucking groovin.

Yeah I've been pretty amazed by the bass work on this album too. Normally, being a guitarist, I try and follow what Adam's doing, but the bass is so encapsulating

yeah its true...i've only heard the first 4 songs (as we speak) but its soo amazing to listen to the bass..im a guitarist too, and am amazed by Adam's work on past albums...but this makes me just wnana go buy a bass right now!

He is just nasty on this record. The instrumentation overall on this album is taking "prog" to a whole different level. You can really tell that Justin and Danny are the premier driving force in the writing. The rythms are in a language that usually only drummers and bass players can speak (in this context, I am not knocking guitar players). Best Drum/Bass combo in music today.

hey...yeh bass player also.
I think JC on lateralus has much better tone...but thats my opinion. It was glassy and pretty and kinda kinky...sorry i describe tone in weird ways.
But this album sorta gets back towards the aenima growls but not as fretty...i dunno if anyone will agree with me, but yeh...still has killer tone, i just prefer lateralus.
As for playing, i dont think i have heard a tool song since JC has joined that he didnt play extrordinary in. No matter what the song needs he does it perfectly.

Yeah, Justin is a genius! The bass basically epitomizes Tool because they are all about hidden and under the surface material.
I believe that bass is an extension of Justin, and his extension is making sweet love all through that long album.
That's what I love about Tool, they are a group of guys who are musical geniuses who love music and love portraying true emotion and ideas through it. Music is another level, and Justin just elevates it!

Justin has taken his playing to a different level. I, too, am a guitar player and the bass blew me away on this album. I agree it does seem like each person is having a chance to shine on each cd and this was Justin's turn. Is it just me or does it sound like Justin is playing a fretless bass in some parts of the album? Just an observation from only my second listen.

its not so much the notes that are complicated its just the timing. hitting those random open notes in the middle at the right time confuses me. oh well i'll go back to learning the songs on guitar since im not even a bass player i just play bass.

holy shit. the bass lines in this album are more than amazing. every things so much more intricate and technical than any things hes ever done.
ive always known he was an amazing bassist but in this album he shines more to me more than every one else. me being a bassist im so glad to finally hear him really show his skill. id have to say that hes definitely one of the top bassists of his era. and all of the different effects he uses are things i wouldnt imagine using.
im so glad that paul dropped tool and justin came into tool. pauls a really good bassist and opiate and undertow and the few songs he did on aenema are really good. but he doesnt have shit on justin on this. the mutherfuckers so inspirational as a musician.
any one have any other thoughts or opinions on this?

The tone of his bass and the variety of licks he plays is outstanding. Just listen to when he first comes in on Wings For Marie at 2:12, the end of Intension at 6:50, the sweet harmonics on Right in Two at 0:20, the funky riffing on The Pot at 1:32 and the wicked "wowwow" on Rosetta Stoned at 5:50.
The best bass playing I've ever heard.

I definitely agree that Justin is amazing on this album...especially regarding his use of effects. He's really mastered the art of implementing a delay pedal into creating a bassline, as well his usual array of wahs, phasers and whammies to add to the texture of his sound. The bassline after the "take you away" part near the start of Jambi was one of the first things to really grab my attention upon listening to the album for the first time, and that syncopated tremolo-harmonic riff in Right In Two is fucking beautiful.
I also love his tone...he gets this crisp, clear, punchy tone that I've never heard anyone but Justin use...anyone know how he does it?
