I had the same thought about "race" (I didn't pick up on "soon" though). I just made a thread about it here: http://toolnavy.com/showthread.php?t=63609 .

I don't know if people have thought that before you or I did (because I won't read a 6 page thread that is 90% the same thing repeated again and again), but I think that its a good interpretation of the lyrics, and I state why in my thread (and how it ties in with Right in Two).

...that's the "feeling" I get from that line, I feel it should say "Gather in place in the rain, soon. Shelter turns to home." but obviously the first "in" and the "the" are absent...do you get the feeling this song doesn't "lead into" Right in Two, but is rather a mirror image. Think about "move by will alone & Pure as we begin" it's kind of opposite the whole "angles on the sideline"/creationizm of R.i.T.

Alas, my lil'ns don't like this song, so I can't consult them for you like I know you want.

I was looking at the lyrics for this song and there is an obvious mistake:

"Hope" should be "home". If one pays attention to the lyrics, one could deduce that it is indeed "home".

I'm hearing this:

This is exactly what I hear, except "turned=turns". Makes sense, too. First you merely have a shelter. If this shelter is in a good location, it becomes a gathering place. Once you start connecting to the places and people around you (race), your shelter becomes "home", and home is something you'll defend (against strangers).

"Gather, place, and raise" also makes sence in the context.

This is very quickly becoming my 3rd favorite song on this CD, right after Right in Two and 10,000 Days. To me though, it isn't about the evolution of man. To me, it is about perversion in the context of this CD. It is so easy for us to take something that can mean 'home' in the simplest sense (shelter, fire, loved ones) and use those same things to rend and destroy, and it started at our basalmost level. And it sums up the entire record. The 'law' (or at least the 'law' that I hear being cut on Right in Two) of loving one another is perverted in so many ways.

On the beganing of the song, about 0:30 to 1:30, I can hear something like: Listen (to me), Listen. It is the same place where is backword message, but played forward.

theory as it seems to reflect the creation of agriculture as being the primary motivator for nomadic peoples to settle down. Or "raise" could be used in the context of child rearing and protection, thus establishing a householdwith a distinct familial lineage.

As it fit the context of making a shelter habitable and comfortable enough to become a home. Plus...Maynard is into Fung Shui.

it's not "pure by will alone" in the 1st stanza, it's "MOVE by will alone"

'Raise' makes sense.. you raise stones to make a shelter which when occupied in harmony becomes home..

the progression becomes.. Here we have A stone (single).. Gather, place and RAISE.. (many stones assembled and arranged to make the rudiments of a shelter from the elements or predators etc).. Shelter turns to home.. (culimination.. from single stone to home)

Also when taken in the context of the song.. where a stone can serve a positive function as a say construction material or an outlet for an artistic urge (rock paintings) a stone can also serve a negative function when seen in the later verses:

"Here we have a stone.. Throw to slay/ stay the stranger.."

"Swore" makes some sense in this case, but I'm not sure what it is - there's probably something which makes a little more sense here.

The "and" in "and raze a" might be uncertain.

It seems pretty obvious to me that the wordplay here presents a duality in reference to the Intension of mankind. If a man is given a stone, or given a spark... that man can use these things to do something either positive, constructive and helpful or to do something negative, destructive and harmful. So the biggest suggestion i would make is that it's "Gather, place and raise a shelter turned to home". Which is all constructive and helpful, literally. Then when given the spark.... "Light the way or warm this home we occupy". I see no metaphor in this song. It's all very straight forward and literal.

Also, in the beginning he says "Moved by will alone" not "Pure by will alone". Cmon... thats pretty easy to hear the difference.

EDIT: Okay totally glazed over the suggestion of "Gather, place, arrange so... blah blah blah" ... I could hear that too and it means pretty much the same thing. I just hate reading lyrics on youtube and elsewhere that say its something like "erase" "razor" or even worse "eraise so" wtf does that mean?

This is what I pick up on.

To acquire and sustain a home in meso-paleolithic era one might simply acquire one of two things. A; a large and or bountiful enough land area. Or simply, the inverse, B; enough manpower to squeeze blood out a fuckin turnip, so to speak. These were particularly small to medium sized nomadic groups that followed the food, seasons and so forth, until settling. Finding first a source of food, then a place of shelter to be near it. These peoples primarily stemed out of Africa, into Eastern Asia.

Thus, "gather place"- a large enough plentiful area to accommodate those few incumbents.

"or race"- enough people to hunt and gather to effectively feed the group.

This makes pretty good sense to me.

Ps, if ur in area "tight" enough to barely feed your own... It makes sense to throw a stone to stay the stranger. Even better yet, forge a blade to slay the stranger. And take whatever we desire. After all, we're ruled by will alone.

here's my best guess, as influenced by my own psyche and its projection onto MJK.

I don't know that I'm hearing him properly, but I heard him in the following way, with the emphasis on the "moved" v. "move" by will alone.

I then interpreted the Earth (stone) verses as "moved" by will alone, and the Fire verses as "move" being to emphasize the difference in nature between the two sorts of wills. The difference in quality between violence of necessity - intimidation and yelling, like bears and raccoons and monkeys etc. (Earth), and of wantonness and purely human nature - killing and stealing (Fire), for example. And one layer deeper in meaning, as I add more and more of my own bullshit to it, I believe he's also emphasizing that even when we think we are moving of our own will, there is only one will... We begin pure, we end pure, and the free will we think we have to make mistakes is at the least temporary, so ..

what a moving part of the movie. In my head, Intension always conjures up this kind of scenario. even the lighting of the horizon seems familiar to my vision of this song. Tool may have done done this on purpose. right in two ties in nicely with the end of that clip.
