It's a shame they chose this part of the song though. It's probably the simplest part, I would've liked to have seen the chorus, or verse, or breakdown part.
id like to see him do faaip de oaiid, i always try to listen to hte drumming in that song, but the static interferes just a little too much.
Well, the drumming isn't constant in Faaip - there are intervals where you can hear it. If you play it on full blast on speakers, you should be able to hear all of it.
To this day, one of the most emotional concert experiences I have ever had was at the Lateralus tour show at Gund Arena in Cleveland. In the section right before the lines "On the wings of will and wind" near the end, Danny pulled off one of the most amazing drum fills I have ever seen, but instead of hitting the cymbals to end the fill, he nailed the gong behind him. It was amazing.
On the actual CD, you can hear him hit the gong at that exact moment also, but there's really no drum fill to speak of before the gong hit
I have 2 full Lateralus-era shows on VHS, but neither of them show Danny nailing that fill and hitting the gong.
Did he do this at any other shows, and does anyone here remember it? I'll never forget it...
he didnt hit the gong at the tabernacle show in atlanta that i can remember, but he did look like a blur with the fill at the end.he is an amzing drummer no doubt about it.i have seen tool twice and both time its very hard to keep your eye off of him.at the tabernacle show i was on the balcony above him and he seriously works the fuck out of the drums non stop.
The gong hit is epic, I wish that was on the recording.
I thought it was? In that part of the song on the album you really do hear them get to a climax at that same part in the video...And I do hear something somewhat resembling a gong or some type of large crash. I could be mistaken though
i also wanted to post that on youtube.com now they have this exact same video but after he plays the last part of lateraus it shows an interview with danny.the guy doing the interview i take it is the guy who designed the kit danny is playing.i think the whole clip i s like 6 minutes so check it out.deinately worth watching.

Isn't Lateralus a pi theory equation plotted on the guitar??
I'm not an expert, but I've read that the song is based on the Fibonacci Sequence up to the number 13. This causes numbers to spiral, {"spiral out, keep going"}. The lyrics and danny follow this sequence in different parts of the song.
check this out: just googled it...
I'm no drummer...but that is definately one hell of a kit. And a drummer.
for those who don't know, danny had his drum set customly designed for him by the best, and his cymbals ( paiste new signature) are imo, the best on the market, especially his ride. Carey is n° 1 drummer!!! i challenge anyone to find a better prog rock\grunge metal drummer.....

I really like the fact he holds his drumstick under his arm when he picks up the mallet to stricke his gong! and then, without losing tempo, takes his drumstick back again.

There is definitely no denying that this is one of the most aesthetically pleasing video clips in the history of my eyes, but I would really love to see DC in that polyrhytmic bliss section . . . "Embrace my desire to . . . " --- _ _ _ --- _ _ _ --- _ _ _

if only you had left out the word "grunge"...and it's all because they came out in that era. if not, you wouldn't be calling them grunge..tsk tsk

Allright. This discussion has been around like forever, but here goes:
As a drummer and musician I can tell you, in terms of technique and rhythmic knowledge (as well as applying that to a song).. Tomas Haake > Danny Carey (***). Although, besides technique and stuff, there is also a matter of taste and personal preference when it comes to telling which drummer is "better". It's very subjective. Danny may be a bit more creative with percussion etc, as well as using new (electronic) drums. On the other hand, I think Tomas' kit (especially his snare) sound better compared to Danny's (and by that I look at Meshuggahs Nothing from 2002, and Tools 10,000 days, three years later (better sound-technology)). In the end it's a matter of taste, I think both are awesome drummers.. but still.. check this out: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BatXT196-Qw
I'm pretty sure it was Danny's idea to melt down the cymbals to forge this set. Ocheltree just followed the idea and just look at that masterpiece of a drum kit. Has to weigh a ton though. Feel sorry for the roadies. LOL
