G39. Is "Message to Harry Manback" an actual phone message?

Yep, someone left someone a threat. Yes, they actually meant it as a threat. So no, it wasn't concocted by the band. (Though the piano part was obviously added in to make it sound more like a love poem).

G40. OK, so who was that message for? Who is Harry Manback?

Danny had this to say about it in some interview:

"Message to Harry Manback is a recording of the words of an uninvited Italian guest who came to Maynard's house one day. A so-called friend of a friend of a friend of Harry's .... Before we finally managed to figure out that nobody really knew him, he had already emptied the fridge and run up a huge phone bill. He got kicked out of the house."

Harry Manback is a pseudonym for the real recipient of the message, presumably a past roommate of Maynard's: Hotsy Menshot of Green Jello.
The toolshed FAQ probably has already answered all of your Tool questions somewhere in it, just give it a good read.

Re: whos harry manback

Longtime Tool fan here. I remember reading a very early interview, back in 1993 or so, printed in some crappy heavy metal rag. This was back even before anybody had email or access to the internet (yes, can you believe it now) and before information on the band was available by sitting down in front of a computer and making a few clicks. They were just a band with a scary as hell video (Sober) in heavy rotation on MTV. The band wasn't even in the damn video, so who the hell are these guys? So when I saw the band interviewed in this metal rag, I had to buy it even though I have never listened to heavy metal. Anyway (this is relevant in a minute), perhaps because of who the interviewer was, I remember them saying their early influences included listening to the band Dio! Following up on that though, I remember them ripping on the typical fans of heavy metal. Knowing what we know now about this band, this should come as no surprise. But the way they criticized the typical metal fans was in describing them as guys with mustaches and muscle cars like Camaros, and hairy backs.

So when AEnima came out in 1996, I saw the Harry Manback reference and thought there had to be some kind of connection. I can't say I've thought about it much further, but I would bet there's something to it.

Re: whos harry manback

I have reason to think that whoever wrote the whole "Maynard dies over 2Pac" thing is the same guy who left Harry Manback messages one and two on Maynard's answering machine.

Re: whos harry manback

I thought Harry Manback was a character in a Bill Hicks joke?
