A large enough earthquake could very well produce a result like this. All these contintents we now have were one day all one continent ya' know, many borders have since gone underwater and we still have the melting polar ice caps as well.

It may be temporary, but it could last a long ass time. Isn't California the lowest part of the continent? The Poles of Earth have been shifting for the past 100 years, meaning the ice caps are melting and relocating. I agree that it can't really "Fall into the sea" so to speak... but if a giant tsunami slammed the west coast, it could submerge it under water for thousands of years... so its essentially the same thing.
Well, I'm not god, and I can't tell you with 100% complete certainty what IS or ISN'T possible. However, to my knowledge, nothing like that has ever happened in recorded human history.
