about how much i dislike 10,000 days, but i can't really appreciate an album completely until i own the package, have ripped it to the PC myself and can enjoy it without all the lame gaps between songs and poor quality of the mp4 rip. with that said, i'm definitely going to give this album a proper listen once it arrives, and i'll more than likely find many redeeming traits in it once its fully been digested.

first impressions of albums are never pretty, so i am hereby erasing anything i have said prior to the album's release from my memory.

Thinking your posts out is fine, as is breaking them into sections. But... well we all have ingrained automatic behavior for certain things, and i tend to skim all letters i read, whereas i read posts on forums throughly. Your forum posts that make themselves look like letters are really really really confusing my eyes!

Listen away from the computer where it can be fully imersive, surely the best and only reccomendation to get.. good equipment probably helps too, doubt theres a problem there though.

i actually praised those two tracks when i first heard the album; it was the rest of it that bothered me.

i'm sure they'll squeeze their way into my regularly played songs though, particularly after hearing some of them live.

Jambi and Rossetta Stoned take some to grow, the more comfortable it becomes the better it is.. Im bias though as I consider it "fuckin awesome"

so, here's the deal...

tool are no longer taking themselves as seriously as they used to, and that's exactly what (when i think about it) i was after. i just downloaded the pot to hear that bill hicks sample at 4:42 (i haven't purchased the album yet - waiting on an amazon order and will buy an aussie copy shortly), and actually loled at the opening in a good way, and really liked the music. so far we've been blessed with hilarious promo shots of the band, an epic, sincere song (10,000 days), among a whole bunch of other refreshing tracks that none of us would have expected.

so, to put it more concisely:

10,000 days = funny maynard / sincere maynard / great music / refreshing as fuck

nin_with_teeth = roflcopter 40 year old angst.

I'm glad to see you back and I am also happy that you are enjoying the new album...

After my first listen, I experienced the greatest INDIFFERENT feeling of my entire life. If ever there were a feeling of indifference, that was the absolute epitome for me as I'll explain:

That first listen was strange. I walked away from it not disappointed but not over-joyed. It had finally dawned on me that this was the Tool album I had been waiting for and looking forward to for so very long (several years). With all the discussions on this forum as well as Blair's posts, I guess I was expected every moment on the album to be like the climaxes from Lateralus and Aenima, as in every single second of new material would be absolute bliss etc. You know what I mean, the moments where you find yourself saying "Yes! This is awesome! This is an awesome Tool song!" etc.

After a short break, I listened to 10,000 Days again and I believe it was the single GREATEST second listen to an album I have ever experienced. I knew what was to come and thus greatly anticipated such fantastic moments upon my second listen - examples include parts of Jambi, the whole build up and release in Wings/10,000 Days and the last half of Right In Two, as well as the "Overwhelmed as one would be..." part in Rosetta Stoned. The list could go on...

Anyway, I found myself on that 2nd listen really enjoying the new music, and it WASN'T me just thinking "Oh well, this is new Tool material, I may as well enjoy it" etc.

Then something odd happened. Being in the middle of a uni holiday, I spent the rest of the day listening to different songs and the entire album over and over again. It was addictive. After The Pot finished, I'd put on Jambi, then Right In Two, then Wings/10,000 Days, then Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned... I couldn't get enough. And again, it WASN'T out of 'consolation' or anything - I just found myself really loving it.

Now (a week or so later) there is nothing better than putting on the entire album at high volumes, especially Wings/10,000 Days. My neighbours must hate me. The album just rocks and flows so well. Vicarious into Jambi into 'Epic 17min Piece' into The Pot into.... it just kicks arse! I also think Right In Two is the most appropriate sounding song to finish the album with in terms of leaving you with feelings that the song generates...

So, Ryan, it is good to see you back!

And I too ordered a signed Alex Grey copy of the new cd, but somehow got mine for US$20 before he increased the price (sneaky bastard!)

i keep on coming back to "refreshing," that's the only way i can really convey what this album is. they're getting older, they've made their point, and now they're giving us a new release intertwined with humour and great music to go with it. it was the only way to go.

of the new album? Bitter disappointment. I'd be fine with it if this was Salival 2, but as it is, i've got a toolish album full of ambient background music right on my harddrive right now.


I'm still buying it at midnight tonight, and then i'm going to listen the fuck out of it. I hope the CD quality audio kicks my ass and makes me regret ever disliking the album.

Its possible that there are things that i am not hearing due to compression artifacts that will make me love the new album.


Unlikely, but possible. A single note can sometimes make a song for me.


Also, its possible the visuals in the packaging will bring it all together for me. Also, again, unlikely.



whats MOST likely is that whenever the music video(s) for the album drops, THAT will do it for me. I didn't love Parabol/a until i saw the video, now its one of my favorites.
