There was no video on the stage floor at the Pearl last time, either.

and this is the site they chose to film for the dvd during the last tour supposedly? That makes no sense to me.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure that was just a rumour.
Thanks for pointing that out, Junior. I had thought we got the floor show, but in hindsight, you are correct (one too many shows for me on this tour). Regardless, the box seats up in the 300s are overall very good.

There was never any intention of recording last springs shows at the Pearl.
That was all just a rumour that snowballed from some assumptions on this board.
Some folks put a few factoids together and it started being touted as definite.
It was mostly based on the Pearl being promoted as having a recording studio and camera system on site, combined with a number of people seeing the Pearl as an ideal place to do a video shoot.
There were actually more reasons not to do a video shoot at those shows than there were reasons to do such a thing.
1) First show of the tour. Bands usually wait until later in a tour so they can be sure everything is smooth.
2) Dannys first show after his injury.
3) Couldn't do the full production. No stage floor video. Lasers were also cut-down because there is not a water connection/drain near the stage suitable to run the full-color lasers, so there were only the green ones (they don't require water-cooling).
4) If the band were to shoot a concert video, they would likely do it in a venue where they would be the sole owners of the recording. I have no solid knowledge to support this, but I think all recordings done at the Pearl are meant to have a "Live at the Palms" branding, or similar. At the least, I would think the casino would want a cut of the profits.

So with all of these set-backs (i.e. lack of full laser set up and lack of concert floor projectors, etc.) how come Tool decided to do another two-nighter at the Pearl?

As far as the choice of the Pearl goes, they probably do two nighters there because the sound is top shelf and playing two nights gives fans a better chance to get tickets.
I really doubt it's because of "big casino $$" they would surely make more $ by playing the T. Mack or some other bigger venue that seats about 10,000-15,000.

No, they actually will take home more net from these two shows for 5K than they would for a sold out show at T Mack. The Palms has the bigger payday of any casino in America. Tool will probably take in $1.5 million for these two shows playing for 5K fans. The casino pays so much higher because they know the band is bringing in 5K people over the weekend. These people will probably drop about 200 or so minimum, if not much more, outside of the show for hotel, gambling, drinks. Tool takes a $1.5 million, the casino pockets the rest. One show to 10-15K, at Tools average ticket would usually take in around 400K-500K or so, gross.

I don't know. The total gate receipts for these two shows is approx. $500,000. You really think the Palms is paying them an extra $1,000,000? You may be right, but that just seems like a lot to make up.

Absolutely, if not more. Let's just use the minimum numbers. Total gate for ticket prices alone is around 500K. Let's say, each of the 2500 per night spends, $20 each on a drinks inside the venue. That would be an extra 100k on vending alone. Both nights, low minimum 600K, just on the shows. Now, let's say, minimum of 500 out of the 2500 per night book one night at the Palms. Rooms are around, what, $150? That would be another 150k over both shows just on rooms. Now, how much on average will those 500 per night spend on food, drinks and the occasional bet while staying at the hotel? These people are not going to be sitting in the rooms. Let's say a minimum of $200 dollars for some, 5 times as much for a lot. There is another 200K, on a low minimum. Now, out of the other 4k who are attending the shows and not even staying at the hotel, how many are going to drop a $20 in a slot machine or decide to hit up a bar after the show in the Palms? Let's say, each person drops $60 at the show. That is another 240K. Anyways, my point is, based on these examples of extremely low minimums, you can see why the Palms would throw them an extra $1million over gate. Also, they have the numbers from the last time they played the Pearl and know how much revenue was brought in and who traveled from where. Also, it is an event show and will bring people into the casino who were in town and may want to try for tickets. Again, they will throw a twenty or so in the slot machine. Also, band and crew may place a couple of bets. It really is a can't lose for the casino.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
crazy, I was bum'd because I missed out on tickets but man on ebay they are selling for LESS then ticketmaster, I think to many people are trying to make money off theses.. the online auction market is way saturated in tool ticket right now so if you missed out I just saw 2 GA tickets go back to back for under 200 (right under), less then TM

I think that the Pearl is the lesser of several evils.
The show is not compromised to a horrible extent, by any means, it's just not the one you would choose to make a permanent record.
In Vegas there really aren't a lot of places to try to pull off a "Tool show".
The Joint is just too small for any tour that carries a production. Nearly every tour that plays there has to cut-down massively. The stage is really small for larger productions. I think that when it was built there was never any plan on having bands bring any of there own stuff in, apart from their instruments.
Playing in the parking lot turned out to be not that great, either. Being in the flight path meant no lasers at all, and the roof of the stage was too low to do the floor video projection. There were a lot of other minuses on that one.
$$$ is not the only factor, but it is a big one for any tour on the road.
Local labor costs and other building expenses, as well as tour personnel salaries, equipment rental, diesel fuel for 7 semi-trucks and 5 tour buses make it difficult to have an easy formula of adding the tickets and calling that a payday.
Thomas and Mack has one of the largest overheads (costwise) in the city. That's why a lot of bands are staying clear of there. There's not a lot of incentive to play there.
I know the MGM has an arena, and so does Mandalay Bay, but they might have some caveats that are not obvious.
The Pearl also boast a great view from every seat, a decent-sized stage, and a well thought out in house PA system that considers coverage more than brute force. They've got speakers hung all over the room to try to give good sound to everyone.
They are also "the new guy" in town, so they are probably more willing to work with the visiting artists to be accommodating than a venue that has been there for awhile.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
Does anyone anticipate a set-list "change?" I've got a ticket for 12/13 at The Pearl, although I'm not entirely positive I'll be able to make it currently. I'd be perfectly fine with hearing the same routine from the April dates, but considering a little bit of time off and what's likely the culminating shows for this tour, think there will be anything unusual thrown into the mix? For those who've attended past tours, do they usually perform something special on the last leg?

I really hope they have a new set. Ive been fortunate to see Aenima, right in two and Pushit (which was absolutely beautiful) and those songs got switched up alot and even left out on some dates. I hope they play more older stuff personally. I know its the 10k days tour but...i can hope for something special

I concur. I was able to hear Aenima (x2) and Pushit, plus the other standard material from this tour, which I was thankful for. I've just noticed from HuntingtonSt videos on youtube, that some rarely played songs are featured during the closing shows. Ticks, No Quater, etc.

Hey sonnyboy...me and my wife are going...we have a pair of tickets for each night.
We're leaving Ontario, Canada Thursday morning and we're staying at the Palms. My wife would not accept me dragging her to Las Vegas and stay at Circus Circus.
Let's meet up when you get to Las Vegas on Friday...perhaps the Island Bar @ the Palms. You can always buzz my room too.
Anyways...keep me posted with your travel details.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
I believe Tool will be showing the video for Vicarious during the mini-tour. They may play it in full during their sit-down break (just like they did for Schism on the Lateralus tour).

See you soon...Ryan
That sounds perfect Ryan. I may even end up doing both shows, but for now, it's just the one.
I am probably rocking the motorcycle again to Vegas (think I'll ride the Triumph Speed Triple this time around). I should get into Vegas around 2pm on Friday and check into the Gold Coast which is right across the street from the Palms.
Definitely the Island bar before and after (unless someone else comes up with something better). I lucked out after that second show last time out and scored us a table, so maybe this time too!
Is your wife a Tool fan at all or is this her first time around?

I saw NIN and QOTSA at the toyota center in 05'. I don't remember any metal detectors. I'll try and ask my bro cause he has been to quite a few bball games there. We did almost get kicked out for smoking a joint, but the sec. guard was pretty cool about it, He said sorry, can't light up in here, if I see you again I'm gonna have to kick you out. It was because we were in seats and no one was smoking anything. Everyone was puffin up in the GA though. I'll be in the center sec 3 rows from the front!!
