The answer honestly is - it depends. Venue and demand play a large part in the approach.
For TM, AXS and LiveNation, trying to get tickets during presales, regular sales, monitoring, Premium, and day of all have different considerations.
For the first two, the obvious approaches of a good internet connection and different browsers on different devices will help. Even more helpful if you have a small network of friends trying to pull tix for the event. But no matter what, it will likely be you vs the bots and bots are going to win most every time.
If the presales and initial onsales are unsuccessful, I move to monitoring mode. Random face value releases into the queue are not uncommon, usually starting around 2 weeks before the show. To get a sense of what kind of releases will likely happen in terms of seating, check the TM/AXS site periodically and see how many Premium tickets are still available. If those are not moving, then Premium prices will likely drop incrementally over time. And if they do not sell at all, then at some point they will be pulled and dropped back into queue at face value. That is normally only on day of.
For Premium, I do buy those but usually only in cases where a show is hard sold based on demand. Or if it's a really good seat and not that far above face value. For example, I don't consider 6th row aisle center to see Tool at $350 to be a bad deal. Plus it is worth a few extra $ to me sometimes to secure tix and take the stress off, especially since I know I am going to the show regardless of anything.
For aftermarket sites, like Stubhub, I only use those sporadically. Maybe 10% of my total ticket purchases over time are through them. They are a last ditch place for me to look and honestly since Covid, they have gotten even worse to the point I only check there for reference to get an additional sense of demand for the show. Still, they do come through when other options ain't working out.
For day of purchases, that is no doubt the best way to get a good seat at face value. BUT, circumstances may not allow for it. For example, the recent Tool show in Anaheim had at least 10 tickets in the 6th and 7th rows drop about an hour and half before showtime. If you already have a ticket(s) that are not as good, then you could upgrade but the amount of time you have to sell your old tickets will be limited and it can turn stressful. I have eaten tickets before using this method. Also, if you are buying for more than just yourself, it is not a great feeling to know you are potentially risking not getting tickets for others if they are counting on you.
The main thing in all cases is not to get too frustrated or sweat it too much. The folks I know who are best at scoring good seats have an uncanny knack for it and I think a lot of the success is down to just remaining calm

It's always a challenge for me to guage the market as the show gets closer
In Detroit I'm taking a good friend for her first Tool show and REALLY want her to have a good experience. She is in the film industry, so she will be as interested in the production as the music. I also don't expect her to stand for 2 hours plus, so i have more to consider than just me.
In the end, I went with StubHub 5 days before show date.
Bottom line, I don't have the nerve to wait to show day when flights are involved...

Totally get it. I used Vividseats just yesterday to purchase Macca tix his first LA show in May. I did not kneejerkpanic getting it but also recognized the scalpers/bots won that onsale war. And fans are willing to pay absurd prices for some artists like McCartney, so waiting until day of releases for him were likely pointless. Plus, interestingly enough, I could see the exact aftermarket listing for the seat I was buying across 3 different sites - TM, Stubhub and Vivid. I carted to check out on all 3 and Vivid’s price was cheaper than the other 2 by over $100. I still paid way too much, but I knew my budget, and it came in around there. Field, 8th row aisle at SoFi. No easy task. Hope it gets easier with the 2 Tool shows I still need tix for in Minny and Chi

Is DC using his smaller kit on this tour? Just wondering.
Junior would probably know, and if so, why?

I don’t think it’s any smaller. I know it’s the one that is painted/wrapped with Alex Grey artwork, but that’s all I know.
By smaller do you mean less pieces, or smaller drums?

Hhooolllyyyyy shit you guys! It’s been a while. Good to see y’all are still doing well. I’ve been going through some crazy changes lately (career change, divorce, dads declining health, moving...) but I figured it was time to check in and say hi.
I have managed to catch 4 shows this tour and I’m planning on Chicago next week. What a wild ride it has been! I have to say, TOOL has been absolutely killing it this tour! With Opiate2 in my headphones and that beautiful FI vinyl on the way I’m in TOOL heaven.
Anyway, cheers to you all and here’s to another round of this amazing band getting me through tough times!

Awesome show in Detroit last night. MJK is great spirits and talked way more than the last few stops I've seen. He spent many of his formative years here and let's us know it!
Needless to say Undertow was a huge surprise and a highlight for me. It sounded soooooooooo good!
I'm starting to think Decending is hole in the stlist, it just doesn't have the same energy live. Especially compared to the early versions before FI came out.
I like the song but it just kind of sucks the life out of the show...

Same here, although divorce was a long time ago.
I did this: moved all the way from California to North Carolina, changed jobs and am dealing with a Dad hitting his 80s.
Hang in there!

Same here, although divorce was a long time ago.
I did this: moved all the way from California to North Carolina, changed jobs and am dealing with a Dad hitting his 80s.

By my count that's only the 4th time seeing Undertow live.
What a treat!

Welcome back swimminginmusic! I just secured Chicago tix today so let me know if around beforehand.
Stoked for Undertow Embryo! Seems like it is one of the new rotating songs, along with RIT and The Patient, etc. My hope has faded to see Tempest in the upcoming shows I'll be attending but no matter. I love these setlists and the band is as good as they have sounded in recent memory.

Undertow was fun! Of the four shows ive seen so far. (Newark, Buffalo, Pitt, DET) Det was definetly the best as far as great sound mixed with less miscues. Part of that could be that Little ceasers arena is just a great place to see a show.
Great shows so far though. Pumped for GR tomorrow night. That venue is pretty small.

Grand Rapids might get another bust out. It's much closer to MJKs home town than Motown.
Enjoy Rexum! Too bad we couldn't cross paths at Pizza Pizza

As Hellboy pointed out, yes.
There are multiple sets of confetti, though, so no 2 nights in a row will have the same pieces (though there could be a few stragglers each night). So a different set each night until the cycle resets.

Chicago got Undertow; it was stellar! They sound great!
I'm a bit surprised, actually. Not sure I can explain why.

Excellent show in Chicago. Maynard not as chatty as he has been at other shows I’ve seen this tour. But the band sounded great. My first time seeing Undertow. That was a real treat. Omaha tomorrow!

Does anyone else take great pleasure every year when the Rock and Roll Hall of fame nominees are announced and TOOL isn’t on the list?
For some reason that makes it even more special knowing that the best rock and roll band of all time has successfully managed to have never been nominated, and on purpose…
Makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, like I’m part of an underground community of the enlightened.

Had a great time at the Omaha show! Loved how engaged they all seemed and how much fun they seemed to be having. Seats were great, set list was good, and had an amazing time. Also, my wife's first show and she loved it!
@junior: sorry for the quick hello! hope i didn't throw you off or anything. great show dude! good luck and safe travels the rest of the tour!

I don't think of it in the context of Tool specifically but until they put Dick Dale in, it will always be a farce to me.

I use what I call my "Green Day" metric.
Rolling Stone/RRHoF seemingly couldn't wait to get them in, and I think they got in on their first year of eligibility.
Take a look at the artists who've gotten in after Green Day (or even the ones from the same year: 2015) and it all looks like some kind of a joke. It's embarrassing that some of those acts waited as long as they did, and most of them had a much larger impact on music than did Green Day.

I know this place isn’t the most active but if anybody here has people that can make it to the Kansas City show and actually appreciate it. I have two floor tickets that I will transfer at no cost so they don’t go to waste. I’m in Tulsa with a sick kid and I can’t make it.

Got back to LA yesterday. Great run in the midwest. Cold as all hell, especially in Chi. Missed getting The Patient at any of the 3 shows but got Undertow x2 and RIT again. The Grudge, Pushit and Descending were my favorites from all 3 and I will give a slight edge to Omaha as my overall fave performance. Had great seats for all. And I now have a very good feel for all of those venues for any future shows (Tool or otherwise).
I went to the zoo in Omaha while there. And I hit the Paisley Park site tour while in Minny. First was good but Paisley Park was amazing and highly recommended even if you are just a casual Prince fan.
