For those who think this album structure doesn't make sense... look again into Aenima. The way this album is built around, is kind of similar, but in a tottally diferent way.

For example compare some tracks like:
Vicarious - Stinkfist
Jambi - Aenima
The Pot - Hooker With a Penis
Rosetta Stoned - Third Eye(?)
Right in Two - Pushit

Really, step a bit aside from Lateralus, look into Aenima again and give more listens to this great piece of music, digest it. It's strange at first, then it gets into you.
