hey cool.
here is my WIP tab:
http://rapidshare.de/files/18241095/vicarious.gp4.html
it's almost done, complete with bass, drums voice and guitar. Your guitar seems to be way better than mine (except for the intro). We could merge them if you want...

yeah I used to do finger exercises of the same nature to work on speed. First just start off doing a double hammer on on the low D on frets 0,3, and 5 (0-3-5= the only frets you use) after you have gotten quick enough to only pick once and get all three notes, move up up to the A string, when you can do those two strings, complete the riff by going on up to the high D string, then back to the A string. You should only be picking once for each three notes on each string. So you do the 0-3-5 hammer on on low D, A, high D, then A again. If you work on uniformity of beats you should get it down in no time. Good Luck. It is very fun to play.

If I had my guitar with me, I would transcribe it. It is a bunch of hammer-ons and pull-offs.

I'm almost positive it is only on 0-3-5, on LD, A, HD, and A. It is just very fast so it seems like there are more notes.
Oh and the very last section of the fast part is 0-3-5, on LD, A, LD, and the final note is a quick open pluck on the low D.

Not really sure about that, try it both ways and see which way fits better. My guess is that it is all palm muted so that it sounds tighter and more in line with the drums. Peace

I thought the ending was so sick the first time i heard the song. Then I saw that it was just a big series of triplets. So simple, so effective, so cool.

Not to be outdone, orange.juice!
Here is my finished midi for Vicarious, with drums (though at a few points they're sort of half-assed). Your guitar was kind of off—believe it or not, most of the song is not power chords, particularly the main riff, etc., and there's some overdubbing too.
I hear something completely different for the chorus as well. Can anyone confirm my midi please?

Can someone explain if the tones that TOOL uses is a special technique. I dissect a lot of music but I dont have any knowledge of the music theory (TOOL does) but I see a lot of similarity with adam's guitar stuff. I saw that Vicarious-intro looked a lot like the Patient and some stuff like Schism. (I can only see it (gp4 :P ) not hear it). I see a lot op open D notes a lot of 3,5,7,8, 12, 13, 15 fretts on the first D and A strings. Is it a particular ladder ?? Once again dont flame me because I'm a noob at general music theorist. I just learn faster if its TOOL-related and I'm curious.

Hm...Things I hear:
- I don't think there's any overdubbed guitar in the first verse.
- I don't know whose chorus is right. Unless someone can alter the original audio your guess is as good as mine, I suppose.
- The solo is overdubbed.
Otherwise yours sounds really good.

I know there's some overdubbing in the solo, but for my tab I used just one guitar track.
