There has been some discussion about this album's meaning on the "Jimmy" board.
I have a friend who has suggested that the entire album is about a breakup. The only song that really doesn't seem to fit in is "Lateralus." And "Faaip De Oiad" of course.
I don't really buy it, but it's an interesting opinion. Worthy of sharing, I think.

That's actually been discussed before. I think that it's completely wrong, but whatever people relate to is what they should perceive the album as. That way the songs have meaning to them and can invoke emotions when being listened to.

Agreed. Listening to this album did help me through my most recent breakup, though. I didn't give much credence to his theory until then.

Everyone who says it's completely wrong is very dumb.
This album points so hard towards being the dissolution of a relationship (any type of relationship) between two people and the fallout therein it's hard to see why people ignore the obvious cues.
I say you're very dumb if you think that's what the entire album is about. It's obvious that not all of these songs are about the same relationship, let alone some not being about a relationship at all.
You may be right about a lot Riv, but this here you're entirely wrong about.

I've never been in a relationship. I think I've decided that it's all a crock of shit that 'cool' people just do to have an excuse to feel like they're better than everyone else.
If you take a look at what each song is about and the order the tracks are in, it's painfully obvious that this entire album was meant to reflect on interpersonal relations and make a statement about them.
The Grudge - A GRUDGE
The Patient - Waiting it out despite the grudge, imagine that
Schism - Lack of communication over these things breaking things apart, imagine that
Parabol/a - one last brief happy moment
Ticks and Leeches - fucking obvious
Lateralus - After the complete dissolving from the previous track, looking for new ways to satisfy oneself, ways a bit more "off to the side" so to speak
Dis/Ref/Tri - The realization of the goal laid out in Lateralus
This has been talked about countless times since the album came out and the mass majority consensus of people who can interpret things seem to come out to a conclusion like this. A connection between two people rots, breaks, and one of them casts aside the idea of such connections entirely.
It's really not that hard.
This is also a generalized simplistic way of viewing it. I won't argue that it's possible to look at it in this light but it's not the only way by far and there's definately obvious signs to there being different meanings to many of the songs.
In essence, we're both right but you set me off when you sat there trying to fucking call me out as stupid simply because I didn't agree with your biased opinion.

your right, its really not that hard...
but come on, one last brief happy moment?! wtf is that?
and your "interpretation" for lateralus(the track)....ummmm
