Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

Well, it was either fly up from Sacramento or drive and see the sites, we drove. 1,850 miles round trip and I'd do it again in a heart beat. Besides the show being the highlight of the trip, Portland is beer drinking heaven. I drank so many good brews Saturday it was amazing...

As for the show I had great time seeing Tool as my 1st band at the Gorge. Opiate was the highlight for me, 3rd show this year 1st time hearing it I'm happy.

When MJK ran to the front of the stage I was wondering what he was doing? I was up on the lawn and couldn't see the hat. I thought he was trying to get the crowd amped up after the wake up you drunk f^ckers comment.

Random thoughts are all I got at this point and its good to read all the post to help me remember what a great time we all had. Up next home town show then Oakland. 3 down 2 to go and nothing has to change......

Maybe he was trying to catch it? There are little toads in the area and my kids can attest to how persistant they can be in NOT getting caught.

Knowing something like this really enforces my feelings of TooL. Good on ya for seeing that, good on ya for sharing, and good on Maynard for getting a little life off the stage before getting squashed!

...what i'd give to have been that frog!

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

What can I say that hasn't been said already?

I had very nice GA seating (thanks to me getting in line around 4:30) and had a fantastic view of the show. The band was beyond perfect (other than Danny's snare being a little 'flat' sounding) and deffinately gave me my money's worth. I saw them in 2002 at Key Arena, and besides the slightly hackneyed setlist, this show was proof that Tool is only getting better with age.

I, along with my girlfriend, were REALLY hoping for 10,000 Days to be played. This would have been such a nice opportunity and setting for the band to unveil it...

Awesome show. This was my 2nd show and I drove from Idaho to see it. Sweet venue. It was cool to see so many fans that appreciated the same music as me. We arrived early but barely made it to our seats as the lights dimmed cuz my brother was fuckin around. Anyways the whole setlist was incredible. Can't wait to see them again

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

Rosetta Stoned was amazing! I'll put my pics on here for all of you to see either tomorrow or Thursday. I just hid my camera in my bra and did not take it out until Tool got on stage. The security guy didn't even give me a pat down, it was more like a pat. I got the pics saved on a disc now. I am going to visit a friend that I went to the concert with and he has a really nice fast computer that I can use since my computer is being a real royal pain in the ass. I was in section B row 35 seat 12. If any of you heard or saw three drunk guys screaming out "the extreme cob" and a whole bunch of other funny stuff then you'll know who I was with at the concert. The thing about the extreme cob is that when we were waiting in line in the car on our right side there was a huge corn field. Two of my friends got out of the car and grabbed a cob. Then some people behind us started yelling out cob! I had many good laughs that night. :)

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

For those that don't know, during the intermission (I think) when they are playing the phone call, it's a thing about a guy who places an ad for a 'black metal' musician, and some black dude calls up and they are arguing back and forth about the difference between a black metal musician and an actual black musician. Google "Evil Joe" and you'll hear it, pretty funny stuff. I'm still reeling from the experience. I'm going to Vegas for vacation on Friday, but getting late. If i had known they were playing the hard rock that night, I would've gotten in a day earlier and went to that show too!! I missed too many tool shows in the past decade, and I can guarantee I'll never miss another one in this area!!

That's obviously taken from the lawn looking down at the stage and the seats. My view was basically from the stage looking back out towards the lawn, and that was a lot more impressive than what's shown in that photo.

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

A little belated, but here are some thoughts...

I gotta start this with a story from last year that oddly ties into this. I was at the Dave Matthews Band weekend, and a friend of mine introduced me to someone claiming they were Maynard's cousin. He knew his stuff well enough and seemed like an honest guy, and when we got to talking about Tool I mentioned how sick it would be if they played the Gorge. He said that he didn't really expect it, saying that while Adam Jones is for bigger venues, Maynard is more about the smaller ones. True story, as far as what I was told.

I got there Saturday morning to begin my Gorge camping experience. I've been to tons of shows there, and have gone every year for something since I was a sophomore in high school (I'm a senior in college now). The vibes were unlike any other Gorge experience I've had. Without exaggeration, probably 90% of the people camping were bumping Tool, whereas with DMB or Ozzfest, people play whatever the hell else. Also, both Saturday and Sunday before the show, the campers would spontaneously start cheering and yelling "Tool!" which was fun. I started yelling "ISIS!" (i'm a big fan of them) and got some responses from my neighbors. People eventually started joking around with it; when people yelled "TOOL!" others would yell "Maynard!" and then "Blair!" and then stuff like "Kevin Federline!" and "President Bush!" My one regret, and it's a very small one, is that I got so tired at the show, with pre-funking and drinking at the actual concert and from the 98 degree heat on Sunday that I couldn't kick it much afterwards... pretty much gassed out around 1:00am which is way early for Gorge camping by my standards.

Anyway, on with the show review. On one hand, I was mildly disappointed. Not because the band was not excellent (actually, it was some of the best playing I've heard them do, and they sounded fantastic), but because of the venue, I *was* hoping for a slightly longer set. I had a gut feeling Tool wouldn't do anything special like that, since it's not like them to do so, but since it's the Gorge and every other band does, maybe it was just too much wishful thinking. To think that bands like Pearl Jam and Dave play for 3+ hours every time, and you go to those shows every year... it just conditions you for high expectations.

That said, I was happy with the set-list. Opiate was a nice surprise, but personally, I'd rather have Right in Two than Opiate/The Pot to fill in the time. Stinkfist was excellent, and Lateralus is my favorite song so that was great. Danny and Adam did a little diddy midway through which was fun (with a pulsing light coming from Danny's kit... very cool). The lighting and video set up was also tight, but I thought the Lateralus tour set up was better and overall more intense.

There were a lot of meatheads there. This was not surprising. I didn't really have a problem during the show being in GA, but it was obvious they were there and I can see how other posters could easily have an issue or two. The Gorge is in the middle of bumfuck nowhere so it doesn't automatically draw the sophisticated Seattle crowd; thinking back to the Lateralus show at the Key Arena years ago, it was clearly a different group. I felt like the only person without at US Army/Navy/Marine/Flag tat...

As others have said, Schism was THE highlight. The middle section blew me away... I'm not sure if they've done that for other shows this tour or not, but before the mellow breakdown leading up to "Cold silence has..." they speed it up and make it so freaking hard. Just tremendous and I suggest going out of your way to hear this new version. I'm not a big fan of Rosetta Stoned but it cuts deep live.

All ranting aside, it was a tremendous experience. I wish they recorded it. Loved Maynard during Jambi with the "King's mountain view" nod to the background, and saying the Gorge was the best venue in the country. Because it really is... Red Rocks is cool, but a notch below.

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

I don't think anyone has mentioned Maynard's escalating scream in the middle of Stinkfist. It would be at 3:29 on the album version, but instead of the subtle little "right" that he normally says, it was more like "rriiiiiiIIIIIIIIIGGHHH!!!" that just kept going up and up. Very unexpected and cool.

He also screwed up, and changed up, a bit in the beginning of Rosetta Stoned. He got a little tongue-tied on "contemplating the whole chosen people thingy" but played it off well by just stopping the line and going on to the next one. He was also saying a lot of lines differently... changing his inflection and tone from the way it was recorded on the album. I didn't like it, personally. It didn't seem like an improvement... just something for his own entertainment.

Lastly, someone already mentioned how Maynard slowed down his lines in the middle of Opiate and how Adam got tripped up. "If you want to get your soul to heaven." -wait- "Trust in me now don't you judge or question." -wait- *Early riff from Adam* (whoops) "You are broken now but faith can heal you." etc...

But Danny was fooled for a second too. He stopped his little rhythm on the high-hat and seemed ready for the song to break out again. Seems like it really was an improvisation from Maynard and it had everyone, not just the audience, fooled.

(Review part 2)

I was happy they played some Meshuggah tracks from "Catch33" before TOOL played their set. Worst part was the shitty repetitive stuff before and after, I don't know what it was. I figured it was a gift from tool to play the meshuggah songs.

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

I pulled into the Wild Horse camp grounds around 3 in the morning on Saturday. The next day was really interesting to see and hear almost every single car blasting some Tool CD. As you walked down the grounds, it was kind of like a Tool museum. Hey, there's Opiate, there's Third Eye, there's Lateralus, there's Aenema, etc.

As I soon found out that it was somewhat unfortunate that I had a floor seat (I had no idea there was a screen on the floor until I read the reviews here). I was off to the left and periodically had a big pillar in my way of Maynard and I couldn't really get a good view of any of the screens. I was eventually able to jump up and over a row and that improved my view a bit.

I went with a group of six guys and none of us had heard of Isis. We asked people around the campground and no one else seemed to have heard of them either. The running joke became, "Hey, does anyone know that other band that's playing with Isis tonight?" or "I came here to listen to Isis. Who the fuck is Tool?" Anyway, I think Isis tore it up and I'm definitely going to look into getting my hands on some of their CDs.

The wait inbetween Isis and Tool was brutal. It was almost an entire hour. You could feel the tension in the crowd, especially when we started cheering every time anything happened on stage. We all cheered when Danny's drums were set up, we all cheered, when the guy fixing the lights came down from his ladder, we all cheered, etc.

Finally the lights went out and we knew it was business. Tool came on stage and we all freaked out as they opened with Stinkfist. There was an added bit in the middle of the song that completely rocked my world. They did this with Schism, too.

I think it was after Schism (or maybe it was Opiate) that the band put down their instruments and sat on the front of the stage drinking water. At some moment I realized everything was brighter and I looked behind me (I was in the 22nd row) and I saw at least half of the Gorge waving around lighters. It was a fucking sea of flame and it was fucking amazing.

Other than hearing a rumor about them ending with Aenema, I had no idea what the setlist was going to be. I had decided before that if I had heard Pushit, Third Eye, or Lateralus I could die happy. When I realized they were going to start playing Lateralus I flipped out and jumped on top of the folding chairs that were on the floor. Listening to Lateralus always gave me dark and black images in mind, but the screens and lights were all flashing white. It was like a new and improved version of the song to me.

When the laser show finally came on to full blast, you could see one of the lasers hitting the fucking mountains past the Columbia River behind the Gorge. Fucking WOW.

I got down off my chair for Vicarious, thinking that there's no way they can end a concert with a first song from one of their CDs. After Maynard told us to peace out and I heard "Hey... hey... hey... hey..." I once again proceeded to flip out and jump on the folding chairs.

Then came the moment I will probably never live down for the rest of my life. After Aenema ended in a crash of Hey's and Danny Carry, the members of the band put their instruments down and Danny proceeded to throw his drumsticks out into the crowd. He then picked up two drum heads, handed one to Adam, and they both threw them into the crowd like frisbees.

I watched the one Adam threw go far to my right as I thought, "Damn, that's not even fucking close to me." Just then it hooked hard to its right and was coming right at me. I was the only one still standing on the chairs in my vicinity so I leaned over as it got closer and closer. I reached my hand out to grab it and it BOUNCED OFF MY FUCKING HAND BEFORE I COULD GET MY FINGERS AROUND IT. The guy behind me ended up getting it. I got him to show it to me as we were walking back and Danny had even signed it. Gods dammit all to hell--I should have jumped for it. I would have landed in a pile of people and folding chairs, but I still would have had it.

Anyway, overall the show was one of the most amazing experiences of my life (it was my first Tool show). I'll always be able to remember Maynard doing his lizard-dance thing or the way he spiralled his hand above his head during the later songs.

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

Question regarding the crazy frequency that played when the lights cut out and the stage was all blacklights.... I could have sworn that was the same frequency/evil noise that they used on the Lateralus tour. Do they always use that crazy sound? Ive been to 2 Tool shows so thats why Im asking, cuz both times, they seemed to have that creepy ass noise going before they play the first song.

They used to use a track of Tuvan throat singing before the shows on the Lateralus tours. The track that I've heard this year doesn't seem to be the same one. There is some sort of quiet, dark, growling ambient track that they play just before they come onstage, but it didn't seem like the same one to me. Tough to say, though, because the volume seemed to be kind of low.

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

Excellent concert IMO, I had never been to this venue, let alone Washington. Great experience, from all the vineyards to the cool cop who gave an out of towner a warning for speeding between Ellensburg?? and the venue. I believe it was a speed trap, but cool because I am never that lucky.

Camping there was an experience alone, from the fall down drunks next to us to teh cool cat who matched their Purple Haze with some of my Grapefruit bud before the concert. Caught a great buzz before and during the concert. Although the bastard who was on the roof of the sound mixer kind of ruined it for me, only because everyone around me was worried he would jump onto them. The sorry ass fans who were in my row and next to me were very annoying, kind of nitpicking everything from drunk fans to the smoking hippies(me) to how boring the show was?? Oh well their lost. No one in my section wanted to blaze, they looked at me like I was sparking up at a Celine Dion concert or something.

After the concert we found some cool peeps to hang with and smoke with until arond 2am. I would also like to thank the all night drummer at the campground for some excellent background music. FYI for the complainers about how hot it is in teh desert? When you have the Columbia River not a mile away, it is not a desert. Your weeds are green and grass is able to survive there, not a desert. But I come from the Southwest so maybe it SEEMS like a desert to some. Sorry for the rant, I just argued with some kids about that before the concert. I liked Washington, some of you know how to entertain out of towners especially at The Gorge. Thanks!

The strings of lights that were raised near the end of the show were particularly disappointing. They just looked cheap and hokey... like Christmas lights in a trailer park that get left up year round.... or maybe like some run-down old carnival/ amusement park out on an old highway in the desert. I DO kind of like the white theme/lab coats/ white stage turned into a video screen... but it didn't seem to work as well as Adam might have been imagining it when he designed it. At least I hope that's the case.
I would have to agree with you on the lighting, but I had a few friends that were in GA that said the stage floor was a visual effect of it's own, and since I was down on the floor I couldn't see it. This was my 6 TOOL show, and the one thing I do miss is Maynard it just seems like he doesn't move like he use to. I know when I watched them in 97 at the gorge he was simply breath taking. The man stopped the whole crowd, and for a while they all seemed in ah of him. Other than that my highlight would have to be Rosseta Stoned, and everyone singing to Opiate. Great show can't wait for them to come back.

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

Belated ?? Maybe. I listened to 10Kdays a dozen times to get the feel of the music, before I started to pay attention to the lyrics.

2ND time Tool goer & over 50

Got there late, so lines to get in were 20-30 mins long. Just 'enuff time to swill
some beers. Missed the 1st band ... heard they sucked. Others here don't think so.

Row 27, just to right of stage. Great seats, great view, outstanding sound, OK visuals (loved the fire).

Lots of pro/cons already here on the visuals. I liked the way the Lateralus tour was
setup, but I guess this way lends itself to 'large venues'.

Sound was very clean, Justin was a bit loud though. Maynard's processed vocals were
sometimes unintelligible, but the clean mike was sweet. A couple of my buds said the sound was solid & clean up by the beer garden too!

My girlfriend (also over 50 & not a Tooler) was thinking they would be more
entertaining. Why is Maynard in the back all the time? Nope I said, it's all about
the layers of sound. She also thought the crowd was well behaved, she was thinking of 'black metal' shows & didn't know what to expect. She didn't know everybody would be singing along.

As for the set-list: I almost shit my pants when 46 & 2 started, would have liked to
hear Right in Two.

HIGH-POINTS

Opiate : Nicely drawn out...but was Maynard really slowing it down, or was he waiting for us to sing it louder???

Schism : nice & slow with double-pumping at end.

"Wake-up you drunk bitches": I knew he was talking to me ... I'd just blew my wad over the first three songs & the beers I swilled in line sweated out.

Thanks to all who posted pix & Who's gonna post the bootleg??

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

I loved the show! I just wish it was longer! The Gorge has always been my favorite place to go. It is very beautiful!

I was not impressed with Isis but I noticed that hardly anyone was. After the first few lyrics like everyone sat down. I kind of felt bad for them. Imagine what that would be like playing infront of that many people and the majority of them just do not seem into the music..

I don't understand why people say they did not enjoy the light show because it was awesome! But I was very disappointed they would not allow cameras! I certainly would like to know how people got them in because I was searched pretty well. I found a great website that has PERFECT pictures though.. for those that are interested here is the link:

Maynard was really slowing it down. He waited between each line... so it was twice as slow as the album version.

Wrong---I was on the barricade/center and was just a few feet away. It was a large grasshopper. About as big as Maynard's thumb.

Also, from the posts I've read so far, some of you will be glad to know that the guy on the sound board roof was "taised" into submission.

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

This was my 4th Tool show and definitely the best for me! Tool is on another plane. I had Golden Circle for PearlJam earlier this summer and saw Nine Inch Nails at the Gorge in May. Both shows rocked but nothing, and I mean nothing compares to Tool in the Gorge!! It was actually reasurring to hear Adam and Justin miss a couple of times if only to remind me that they are actually human. And Danny is a BAD MOTHERFUCKER!!!

I don't know why some of the threads were complaining about the set list. EVERY Tool song is a gem. I also don't get the people on the floor complaining about their seats...it's about the music, not the stage. The video floor perspective would have been cool to see though. I liked the fact that this show was stripped down a bit. I was dead center, 22 rows from the stage. It just doesn't get any better and I finally got to see them actually playing their instruments. They are true wizards. Hope they come back to these parts before the end of their tour.

Peace-

Tool was amazing! I loved camping out there, and meeting some fellow fans. Its great having converstaions with people who are as passinate about music as you are. the show was amazing...I never thought i'd hear opiate played live. If i could go back i wouldnt change a thing. Hope to meet more of you in the future!

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

this was my third tool show (98 at mercer arena and 01 in spokane) and my boyfriend won front row tickets on the radio...since we are both huge fans that missed out on tickets this was amazing...not only front row, but the exact middle (seats 5 & 6)! we got caught in the traffic coming into the gorge and ended up getting there about 8:30, missing the opening band which was ok since i have never heard of them (although i heard they were awesome)
The entire front row were radio winners, the people next to us were from portland and huge fans, the people on the other side were from spokane and knew the "radio tool songs" ...kind of a bummer for people that i know who love tool...I have to give kudos to the security people-they did a great job of managing the crowd at the front!
when the band opened with stinkfist, i think i got tears in my eyes...i have seen some people complaining about the set list here, but i have to say that it was perfect for me..there were a few songs i would have liked to have seen, but with my other concerts, i have seen pretty much every song live that i love...
i have never had a concert experience like this!!!! we were so close to the stage that I could almost touch it. Since we could not see the floor of the stage, i had no idea till the next day that they were playing videos on the stage....i wish i could have seen a bit of that, but i would not have traded the seats for anything! the show was amazing...there are moments that i can not get out of my head. I have visions of maynard weaving and bobbing his head, adam jones playing on 46 & 2, the sea of lighters was beautiful, especially from our vantage point...during the part when the band took a break...i caught the eye of danny carey who threw me his gatorade bottle...it is kind of ghetto to savor someone else's garbage...but danny carey is probably my favorite drummer of all time so i will keep it prominantly displayed in my house...
all in all an incredible once in a life time experience!!!!

also i found some video on myspace...just search "tool gorge" under the video section and there are 4 or so decent videos...including a few of the lighters!

Knowing something like this really enforces my feelings of TooL. Good on ya for seeing that, good on ya for sharing, and good on Maynard for getting a little life off the stage before getting squashed!

...what i'd give to have been that frog!

To all who have been asking and wondering they were picking up bugs (Praying Mantis and other bugs to be exact). My friend who was on stage (behind Adam) said that Adam AND Maynard were obsessed with the bugs. They had been taking pictures before the show of the bugs. My friend had to help Danny with his camera because he couldn't get the "right" bug shot.

Oh yeah, and the show was AWESOME! My 5th and one of the best. You cannot get a better show in a better venue (except maybe the Paramount).

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

As others have said, Schism was THE highlight. The middle section blew me away... I'm not sure if they've done that for other shows this tour or not, but before the mellow breakdown leading up to "Cold silence has..." they speed it up and make it so freaking hard. Just tremendous and I suggest going out of your way to hear this new version. I'm not a big fan of Rosetta Stoned but it cuts deep live.

Yeah, my row either. I had an ex-con who had been sober for two years and a really big dude that just said NO! So I felt like I total leper. Oh well, more for me! Too bad you weren't in my row!

Re: 2006/08/27 - George, WA - Gorge Amphitheatre

082706 was my first time at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State, USA. wikipedia link

First time I saw Tool was back at 052893 opening for Rage Against The Machine at the Brixton Academy in London, UK. To tell the truth - I wasn't paying any attention. That show was RATM + TOOL + WOOL. Fast forward to 2006.

Then my friend has this extra ticket to go see Tool at the Gorge. I'm glad that I went.
Sunday show. Excellent temperature and humidity, comforting breeze on the air, the smell of ganga and Nag Champa. Sounds pretty good? Well, it was sweeter than that!

Bill Hicks used to talk about UFO's occasionally. Well, I was sitting there on the grassy hillside of the amphitheatre watching the coolest fucken light show ever... yes, I'm talking about lasers. Green lasers. The lighting effects for Tool were like a UFO mother ship landing (or taking off).

And the stage was all in white which allowed for over a dozen screen projectors to tile the same images across the stage... like a gigantic itunes visualizer. Early in the show, the stage looked like a "fiery flames of hell" screensaver tiled across the stage floor and background with the illusion created of the band being sizzled in the fiery pits of Hell.

The overwhelming effect was that I was revisualizing the concert for several days after the event - As anyone might do if they had seen something awesome.

I quietly wished that the stage rig would turn into the biggest UFo event, ever. And I imagined that the mothership would sound like Tool's music. Earthquake drums, meteoric base lines, lobotomizing guitar riffs and singing like you might believe it was Bill Hicks welcoming you aboard Mothership 1...

"All aboard for tonights venture into Earth orbit. Please, smoking grass is allowed on this flight and all future flights so toleration is encouraged amongst you non-smokers making the trip with us this evening. Um-kay?"

Salutations, Brothers & Sisters of the great band Tool,

And to 3 Canadian camp neighbors all the way from Calgary, Alberta, driving 12 hours one way to see Tool. It was that special kind of time & place that we're sure to not forget soon. Peace be unto you.

Tool Fans : Thank you for the opportunity to chill out with 20,000 people... And the nicest rollies I've ever laid eyes on... Now that's tight!

Everyone needs a hug. 9-11 was an inside job. Wake up. Seek truth. Exit matrix.
