Vicarious was leaked by the most stupid means (put up on an unsecure server). The album leaked just as strangely in the most weird fuckin format (was it an inside job?). About a week away yet the album art hasn't been revealed. And Blair's ominous comment...
Quote:
"Now where was I?.. Oh yeah, TOOL!.. I'm not going to reveal my source, Mister Patience, but do you want to know the kind of things that have been going on while this record was being recorded? Okay, first there was the decoy record just to confound all those would-be bootleggers out there. This took, oh, about a year, just because the band members wanted it to sound pretty close to the real thing (so as to be believable), along with equally believable art design. When they weren't working on this grand deception, there were other pleasant distractions, such as...And then try to imagine what when on in the studio itself (this time while recording the real CD)."

Blair 'Nostradamus' Blake predicting the inevitable. Honestly, did anyone ever doubt that the album would leak at some point?

The artwork leaks are just as odd as well (the stereoscopic images). "Someone" is leaking them a few at a time anonymously yet without the cover or tracklist....

Blair is just trying to lead us off the trail. The album is real, and he said it was a decoy, just so that when the time came that the album leaked, so many people would think it actually was a decoy, that all the people who downloaded the leak would go buy it again out of curiosity.

With everyone so divided on the issue, regardless of what happens, Tool can now claim to have suckered at least one side.
"Haha, you fell for the decoy 10,000 Days album", or "Haha, you fell for the false trail and thought that the album was a decoy. Tough"

On one hand, I'm inclined to agree that the leak of the album seemed a little more like an inside job than an accident. On the other, I don't see how such compelling songs as "Wings for Marie" could have been made as a joke. I will say that I enjoy the album immensely, decoy or not. It doesn't taste like the old Tool, but I like the new flavor.

I'm not going to go into this either way. I haven't listened to the leak, and I don't intend to, but if it is a decoy, it can only be a good thing as it would lead to more Tool.
Doubt it though.

Since when is m4a a "weird fuckin' format"? It's the default format for iTunes and an open standard (unlike MP3).

Not weird, but annoying. I don't use itunes, but it wouldn't play on either media player 9, vlc or musicmatch. QT played it fine, but I didn't bother checking if it had playlist capabilities. I went codec searching but ended up throwing it at nero instead.
BTW, hows the holdout going dimwell? Hang in there dude.

just amazon search tool or 10,000 days. you'll see that may 16th shows a $26 CD entitled 10,000 days (at one time amazon had it called 10,000 years). so maybe they are releasing a Double Disc containing both the songs that were "leaked" and a new set of tool songs.
which in theory should make us some of the happiest Tool fans ever, possibly 20 new tracks!

Not a weird format at all. Obviously the guy who leaked the CD first ripped it in iTunes.

actually they're not... but for all intents and purposes they can be used interchangably.
Vorbis is the name of the free audio codec under the aegis of ogg
there's a free video codec in the works called Ogg Theora... and then there's a VOIP audio codec called Ogg DamnedIfICanRemember...
"ogg" can refer to any of the 3.... but vorbis is the widespread one.

man... honestly, it takes a bit of restraint to keep me from getting my hopes up. simply due to the fact that i love the 'leaked' album so if for some amazing reason this rumor was true and there was a whole new album... i would go insane with happiness.
5 years is a long time for the danny adam and justin to write music. you gotta think there is a slight possibility that there's more than 77 minutes of music floating around. we'll see on may 2nd, though...

i want wavs.... lossy stuff sucks. that's probably why people are complaining. lossy stuff are less sonically compelling especially for a compelling album.

exactly drone. they've been writing since 2003ish. it doesn't take 2-3 years to write 7 songs for 10,000 Days (4 of which really isn't new music or music at all.)

the files that have leaked were lossless, at least from the point of the leak onwards. I mean, I got them as musepack files first, then m4a's.

not that i have it, but if the unconfirmed information serves me correctly, the leak was encoded in m4a low complexity which probably means not Apple Lossless. but i wouldn't know cuz i don' have it.

It doesnt have to have been made as a joke. It clearly isn't. It's a decent song.
These could just all be songs that they made and shelved because they didn't quite have the required goodness to be on a Tool album. (Which I could agree with). It's silly to assume that the only songs tool ever make appear on the albums.
But yeah, that blair paragraphs says they "MADE A FAKE ALBUM".I really doubt they would do that.
The only hope is that the songs are not totally finished, and will appear on the album not totally the same or that somehow there will be totally different songs, with these being "b-sides" and "outtakes".
Unfortunately, I won't hold my breath on either of those possibilites.
