I have no real insight at this point. My best guess is that we'll see more info in July once they're done touring.
As for the new songs, I'm quite happy with both. While I agree with some of the criticisms say they sound like rehashed Tool riffs, that's just fine with me, and I enjoy repeat listens of both of them. Despite the having strong links to older Tool songs, I think they are sufficiently original in parts that they hold their own pretty well. While Maynard doesn't really push himself vocally, I'm satisfied with how he sings, and the lyrics are decent too I reckon. I think the instrumental half of Descending, and Adam's solos on that work will shine on the recording, more so than the live stuff. Super keen to hear more.
I'll reserve judgement until the album arrives in regards to them being better or worse than other Tool stuff.

I'm pretty sure the lyrics to Descending that are all over right now have an error in them. I'm hearing, "Call us all to whack in order!". I'm pretty sure he's asking us all to form a circle jerk.

I did not want to do the obvious and fanboi the new stuff until I really gave the songs a fair listen. So, now that I have done that, I feel happy and maybe a little relieved to say I really like both songs, especially Descending. The arrangements and some of the playing still needs tightening up live, especially Adam's parts. But I am genuinely excited now for the new record.

It's pretty astonishing that they broke with tradition and played songs before the CD is released. I think both tracks are good but feel they are a little unfocused and meander a bit. Aug 30 = 75 more days, give or take..

You mean the same tradition where they played tracks before the release of the last 3 albums?

I mean fully formed songs on the setlist with names - not just snippets.
Are there examples where they played yet to be released songs on tour months before the albums were released?

I dunno. I’ve listened to both of the new tracks dozens of times, saw them live, and as much as I want to like them, they just don’t resonate like the first spins of Aenima, Lateralus or even 10,000 Days. I’m sure the album versions will be better, but neither of them have any sort of build up to a climactic release that many TOOL songs on Aenima and Lateralus have, which I missed on 10,000 Days.
Still holding out hope for the other 3 or 4 songs.

No, but the Aenima, Lateralus and 10k Days tours all kicked off prior to album release.

CCtrip is an awesome cosmic trip. Masterclass drumming. And with the guitar added now I think this will be the opening track of the new album. Also excellent lights and video.
The rest cool greatest hits. Intolerance neat to hear but Swamp Song in '06 was better. Aenema, the Pot, Parabol/a, Jambi, 46&2, Vicarious & Stinkfist great as usual.
Saw them 8 times now and I wonder if they will ever drop 46&2, Stinkfist or Schism. But with that sped up part Schism never gets old.
Only thing I could complain about are people who scream the lyrics... out of key.. in a hysterical way.
People around you pay to hear Maynard not some over-enthusiastic fan.

I don't think Descending is the last song on the album.
With my theory I actually think it'll look something close to this:
1.
2.
3. Filler
4.
5. Filler
6.
7. Filler
8. Descending
9. Filler
10. Invincible
11.
12. Filler

Don't expect there to be an extra five tracks (excluding segues) we haven't heard yet imo.

Fwiw, I had a low key night Friday and listened to a mix of Tool songs. The only record I played from start to finish was 10k Days. Not saying I don't love them all, but there is something about the flow of 10k Days that really works for me.

I’ll talk to you in 30 years. I just finished writing a scathing review of Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

80 mins on a single CD is probably plenty but it will be a double vinyl release. I cant wait to buy the Super Mega Delux Edition with extra tracks and a tacky badge.

Re: General Tool Discussion
80 mins on a single CD is probably plenty but it will be a double vinyl release. I cant wait to buy the Super Mega Delux Edition with extra tracks and a tacky badge.

Double vinyl is pretty much a given I reckon, I suspect it might even be a triple vinyl, as the song lengths make it tough to squeeze onto four 20 minutes sides.

Yeah, 3 records sounds right, maybe with a etched 4th side. I do have it on good authority that there will be a battery in some version of the CD and that has contributed to the delay.

Yeah, that's reportedly what Danny had mentioned to someone. We'll see I guess, seems quite likely that the delay to August was packaging related

I saw that tweet, I heard it somewhere else. But interesting to see DC confirm it.

Yeah, I've heard both new songs they're playing (through youtube) like most, i'm guessing
I don't want to "overanalyze" what I've come across, but I'd agree that Descending and Invincible are both going to be good as usual (who knew?) and pleasant to the ear (especially Descending)
Anyway, I'm looking forward to this album and when I can get to a concert again.

I'm sure its because I've developed a milineal's short attention span, but it's hard for me to stay engaged and focused during the 2 songs we've heard so far. Neither one grab me and pull me in.
Not this it's not quality, quite the opposite, it sounds like everything Tool has done has lead them to this point. I wonder if I've changed.

You're out of your mind, these songs are tight (i'm mostly just kidding with you).
Sometimes I just need people and noise around me to chill out before I can really focus and absorb music.
My own opinion on the band at this point is that they've almost just gotten better. I mean, if you're looking for shredding guitar solos and every lead/melody to be like butter, ya know...
Everyone's got their own style in music anyway. I started on drums, went to guitar, tried some keyboards and so on and I wouldn't call myself the shit on any of them, but not too bad either.
