GreenSurf, you need to chill out, buddy! Don't take me so seriously. I thought it was a clever joke, I guess you didn't. (I'm also sick and tired of horny 14 year-olds coming on internet forums and posting how hawt every girl is from their avatar).

bellamadia, I don't even know why you're offended. I said you were beautiful. Just because I said that "there are more beautiful" people, that doesn't mean you're not. If I say, "... you can listen to great bands like Tool, and others even moreso," it doesn't mean I'm saying Tool sucks, just that they're better.

You people need to chill out!

And finally, some DT fans.

Bella, if you've only heard Images and Words, you're missing out on 6 (7 including When Dream and Day Unite, debut before I&W) other Dream Theater albums. I recommend you immediately download the following songs:

A Mind Beside Itself (Three part epic: i. Erotomania, ii. Voices, iii. The Silent Man)
A Change of Seasons (EP single)
Trial of Tears
Home
The Glass Prison
In The Name of God
Octavarium

That should get you started on some really, really good stuff. One from each album.

By the way, listen to Smurf; buy the albums! I own them all, plus two live DVDs, and I've been to two shows, so I don't feel too bad telling you to download anything. ;)

ytse jam = "majesty" spelled backwards. Originally their name before they changed it. You sure you worshipped DT? The very lowest dipshits of fans even know this. nice try anyway.

something paradoxical with these fanboys: "DUDE! I LOVE THE POT!!"

when Maynard sounds like LaBrie getting kicked in the balls singing an octave even higher in the first half.

I've only heard Mystery Train and Duel with the Devil. Not such a fan of the former, but the latter is fucking mindblowing. I'm going to get Bridge Across Forever as soon as I get some spare cash.

That doesn't include the bootlegs.

Bridge across Forever? Dreams Across Forever? Simple mistake. Specially in this thread.

I've listened to Dream Theater and Joe Satriani. I find DT to have more in common with Satriani then they do with Tool.

Tool is a technical band, not the MOST technical, but technical in a very deliberate sort of way. All the members of all the bands mentioned are excellent musicians, some far more better technically than others, but Tool seems to capture a moment, an emotion, in a more powerful way. That is the simplest way I can put it.

The only difference is Tool just gives people the illusion of superiority. "Understanding" references to high school level maths, strange religious references gives people that understand it the idea that they are the only ones who do. This gives them the ultimate title "Fuckwit Tool Fan". They crap on about it like they are the only ones who hold what they think is divine knowledge. They think that nobody else gets it.

I think you're the first sensible poster I've seen on here in ages. Just like my friend said, "I fucking hate Tools fans. They think they're the fucking Buddha because they can sing along to Lateralus."

Maybe you aren't able to hear which octave singers are singing in, but Maynard on the pot isn't any higher than a lot of stuff all the way back to undertow.

It's all good, I must have misinterpreted your post. I know that saying that there more beautiful people out there is not an insult, it was just the context of it that seemed like a dig. No worries. :) fyi- I don't think GreenSmurf is an horney 11 year old, you should see some of his photography from his trip toIreland, AMAZING and clearly the work of someone more mature. :)

A Change of Seasons (EP single)
Trial of Tears

The Glass Prison

By the way, listen to Smurf; buy the albums! I own them all, plus two live DVDs, and I've been to two shows, so I don't feel too bad telling you to download anything. ;)
Thanks for this, I am actually going to go buy 1 or 2 and start to listen again, I'm kind of excited!

Home
The Glass Prison
In The Name of God
Octavarium

That should get you started on some really, really good stuff. One from each album.

By the way, listen to Smurf; buy the albums! I own them all, plus two live DVDs, and I've been to two shows, so I don't feel too bad telling you to download anything. ;)
Thanks for this, I am actually going to go buy 1 or 2 and start to listen again, I'm kind of excited!

All the MUSICIANS in DT are world class, top 10 all time easy. But really I think portnoy is the least impressive out of everyone. His name slips my mind right now, but I think the synth player is by far the best musician in the band, with petrucci behind him. When I think DT i think huge extravagant solos on end. When I think tool I think art. And I really wish the singer would die, or LTE would put out more stuff. Because that would be my favorite group of musicians.

I've listened to them enough to know that further listenings will not be any more pleasurable. Why would I waste my time on the sub-par songs that Dream Theater writes? Great musicians they may be, songwriters they are not.

this comment based on the collective asshats spewing their close-minded rantings in this thread. You really don't know shit to be honest, and I can tell. sub-par is at the opposite end of the spectrum. Go back to your mediocirty and listen to The Pot.

jesus fucking christ this thread is still alive?

Just because someone says DT aren't good songwriters, it doesn't mean they "don't know shit". Most people would probably agree with that statement.

This thread has convinced me to at least give Dream Theater a listen... their name has been in my face regularly, it would seem since 1991 or so... but I never had the balls to just buy an album blind -- plus, back then I was 16 and not exactly musically enlightened. Does anyone here remember Enuff Z'Nuff? Ugly Kid Joe? yeah... *sighs in shame. (I bet those two bands have never been mentioned on a Tool thread before... LOL)

So I figure that with all the debate about their similarity to Tool, and how their sound compares (or doesn't) to the music in "10,000 Days", I should at least know what everyone is talking about. I'll read around to see what's what. Thanks for the "assignment", fellow boardies!

Just for the record, I disagree with your post. I enjoy DT quite a bit but Tool is by far a better band. Each has its strengths, though. Here's how I feel about the players.

Well, Danny is definitely a better drummer in my opinion than Portnoy, on taste and technical merits, and Maynard is a much better singer than James Labrie even if his range isn't as wide.

Adam obviously, from a technical standpoint, can't hold a candle to John Petrucci. I'd say that as songwriters they're about equal, though. I think they both have great ideas. Petrucci writes really great stuff from a harmonic perspective. I actually despise him as a soloist though. Very cliché.

However, John Myung is the best rock bassist ever. Period. Justin is great, probably second best as far as rock players go, but John Myung is a BEAST. He's like the bass equivalent of Danny Carey. Technical genius but at the same time has perfect instinct and taste.

If you've ever seen him live, you'll understand. He plays wicked fast and with incredible authority. AND with his bare hands. No picks in Myung's palms!
