I've listened to Dream Theater and Joe Satriani. I find DT to have more in common with Satriani then they do with Tool.

Tool is a technical band, not the MOST technical, but technical in a very deliberate sort of way. All the members of all the bands mentioned are excellent musicians, some far more better technically than others, but Tool seems to capture a moment, an emotion, in a more powerful way. That is the simplest way I can put it.

The only difference is Tool just gives people the illusion of superiority. "Understanding" references to high school level maths, strange religious references gives people that understand it the idea that they are the only ones who do. This gives them the ultimate title "Fuckwit Tool Fan". They crap on about it like they are the only ones who hold what they think is divine knowledge. They think that nobody else gets it.

I've listened to them enough to know that further listenings will not be any more pleasurable. Why would I waste my time on the sub-par songs that Dream Theater writes? Great musicians they may be, songwriters they are not.

Just because someone says DT aren't good songwriters, it doesn't mean they "don't know shit". Most people would probably agree with that statement.

This thread has convinced me to at least give Dream Theater a listen... their name has been in my face regularly, it would seem since 1991 or so... but I never had the balls to just buy an album blind -- plus, back then I was 16 and not exactly musically enlightened. Does anyone here remember Enuff Z'Nuff? Ugly Kid Joe? yeah... *sighs in shame. (I bet those two bands have never been mentioned on a Tool thread before... LOL)

So I figure that with all the debate about their similarity to Tool, and how their sound compares (or doesn't) to the music in "10,000 Days", I should at least know what everyone is talking about. I'll read around to see what's what. Thanks for the "assignment", fellow boardies!

Just for the record, I disagree with your post. I enjoy DT quite a bit but Tool is by far a better band. Each has its strengths, though. Here's how I feel about the players.

Well, Danny is definitely a better drummer in my opinion than Portnoy, on taste and technical merits, and Maynard is a much better singer than James Labrie even if his range isn't as wide.

Adam obviously, from a technical standpoint, can't hold a candle to John Petrucci. I'd say that as songwriters they're about equal, though. I think they both have great ideas. Petrucci writes really great stuff from a harmonic perspective. I actually despise him as a soloist though. Very cliché.

However, John Myung is the best rock bassist ever. Period. Justin is great, probably second best as far as rock players go, but John Myung is a BEAST. He's like the bass equivalent of Danny Carey. Technical genius but at the same time has perfect instinct and taste.

If you've ever seen him live, you'll understand. He plays wicked fast and with incredible authority. AND with his bare hands. No picks in Myung's palms!

I can tell you know shit since you think DT is a great band. Give your head a good shake and listen again.
