question about the lyrics

the posted lyrics on TDN aren't what i'm hearing at one part of the song

Posted:
It took so long to realize that
You hold the light that's been leading me back home.

what i hear:
He/I was too scared to realize that
You are the voice that's been calling me back home

anyone else hear this? seems pretty clear to me.

also does anyone know what he is whispering in the middle, the two sets of quiet lyrics in between the louder guitar riffs?

Re: question about the lyrics

The lyrics on this this page aren't neccesarily exact to the album, there's a note somewhere about Maynard slightly changing the songs when he sings them, so there might be a few discrepencies. So what you're hearing may in fact be what he's saying on the album.

What I tend to do is just fit the lyrics that I think I hear with the particular interpretation I'm using at that particular point in time. As long as it makes sense to me and seems to fit, then it's right to me, in my opinion.

And here's the whispering, you can usually find these if you dig through the archive:

I wish that I could see you
Turn and run to play
Dreams are fading
Carry my ancient soul
Carry me into the light

Aim your body heavenly
Enduring a memory
I'll come to your light
Hold your light
Hold your light where I can see it

Hold it
High

Re: question about the lyrics

hmm.. I might agree with the first verse of the whispering, but in the second one, I definitely hear:
"Hold your light, eleven, lead me through each fatal memory,
hold your light, hold your light, hold your light where I can see"
It also helps that this is what he says during the shows (at least, in Perth, 2002).

Wow, I think you're right.. but when I listen (on the album anyway), I can hear both the line "Aim your body heavenly" AND "Hold your light, eleven" depending on which one I'm expecting to hear.. that's f-ed up man.. neat-o

thanks for pointing that out...

Re: question about the lyrics

Where's the last "hold it" supposed to be? The beginning of the scream?

Re: question about the lyrics

What are you talking about?

Ha, do you ever think that maybe Maynard just whispers nonsense into the microphone to fuck with us? And then he comes on the forums and laughs at what we think he's saying...

"Aim your body heavenly"

"Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here."

Yes, they're still saying the same thing... just in a different way again, from a different angle, a new perspective

Re: question about the lyrics

I think artists purposely sing it like that so that you can interpret it your own way, whether you want it to be the way it says on this website, or it can stand as your own personal message. That's the beauty behind phenominal lyrics: they can be incredibly deep and challenging, while still being close to the heart and relatable.

Re: question about the lyrics

the lyrics on the album are

"He was too stoned to realize, you are the voice thats been calling me back home."

NO I am not joking, that is what he says, he was too stoned, not scared. Listen to it over and over and that is what it is (and no I don't smoke pot)

Re: question about the lyrics

I always heard "I was too stoned to realize you are the voice that's been calling me back home" (I don't smoke pot anymore either).
