True.
And Maynard is not egocentric one bit, huh?

there doesnt have to be a drum solo every 20 seconds to show that he's still got it. There are parts where it is appropriate for him to go crazy, and he does, like vicarious, everything after the tabla solo in RIT, and most of rosetta stoned

Says who? You know his schedule best. Danny went on with his other projects and worked just like Adam went on and did other things in the off time. It's not like Maynard was the only one with other projects and he was the one deciding everything.

I think thats a pretty good theory. Whether it's right or wrong doesn't really matter. It's Tool and nobody will ever be completely sure besides the band itself. I think the picture analogy was good thinking.

Another thing to think of with the curtains is the David Lynch connection.
In Lynch's films, red curtains are a sign that the character is dreaming...
I think the photos are primarily meant as art, depictiing various scenes of trapped light, division, death and abandonment, not as 'just' biographies of each band member.

ok... i've said it b4 and i'll say it again.
first: tool has to do atleaste 1 more album because they signed a 3 album contract with volcano after all the legal shit(b4 lateralus). also they were saying how they are happy maynard is done with apc so they can all work together on the next album and get done with it faster. the next album might be the last album because maynard said that they're getting old and can't do this forever.
(don't cry therez always pucifur)
second: (this is just my theroy on the album) they said that this album would be their most personal and i believe that the pictures represent each of them offering a side of them in the music. i mean by this that they each have their own songs that directly relate to their lives and beliefs.
with out a doubt maynards are wings 1&2.
if i had to asign the others (i have nothing to suport these acept by each members personality and what instrament stands out the most to me):
vicarious- justin/adam
jambi - danny
the pot- maynard
lipan conjuring- adam
lost keys/rosetta stoned- justin
intension- danny
right in 2- adam
viginti tres- danny
just a thought.

i apoligize for getting angry, but i'm just tired of all you people that come on here to bash eachother and act like your better or smarter to make you feel good about yourself. grow up and get a hobby or sumptin.

Danny told me personaly that as long as people really like the albums and the band loves making them and as long as they are constaltly evolving, that the albums will continue to come. So I guess when they all don't feel creative anymore thats when they call it quits. Thats what I pulled away from the whole conversation. It was like he said there will be albums without actually saying it... ya know? Famous people or people that others look up to seem to have a way of doing that. Eluding to future plans without flat out telling you thier concrete plans... I donno, just thought you'd all like some optimism here. i think there will definatly be another album, how long we will have to wait... hard to say, 10 years this time?

It is true. Lateralus is the first of the three record contract. I think it was due to lawsuits and battles with their previous or volcanoe that actually allowed them to search for other contracts or something......can't remember the details but its around so if you want to know, then fucking figure it out yourself.

I haven't looked into the contract thing because no one seems to know what it is.
For example, that's the first time I've heard there's a 'new' contract.
Some people say they have fulfilled their contract with this album.
Some people say they have one more to go on this contract.
Besides, they have a DVD and a potential single in the works, which could possibly go towards completing a contract.
But what about the damn artwork??? Are the curtains and band member's objects just random symbols or is there a connection between them?

This isn't Tool's last album. I would be VERY surprised (and disappointed) if it was. APC is pretty much finished, so more time will probably be focused on Tool. I'd say the next Tool album will be the final one, and it'll probably come out sometime in late 2009/early 2010.

You talked about how you thought Danny was trapping something into the jar. I donno how many people here know about this, I'd guess about 95%, but Danny always talks about how he summons demons to himself to play drums and whatnot...think this could have any connection??

Possible.
Maybe they're all backstage preparing for a gig... so Danny's gotta release his drum demons!

...and what better way to tell the world you're breaking up than by releasing a new album.
That's about as bright as telling your friends and family that you're getting a divorce by getting your wife pregnant.

Blah, blah, blah....shit or get off the pot! SFW if it is the last thing they ever do? Better to go out on top than to keep going and embarass themselves.
It just sooooo wouldn't be their style.

ok, it's either their last album or it isn't, but it would be a huge let down (and not tool-like at all) if the artwork in the album is about the band's future... it's about something bigger than the band

My theory orignially before 10k days came out was that after lateralus they were going to a more social, grounding album than lateralus. i think this is the case. Then they were going to do an album even more inspirational and vague than lateralus (5-7 years after 10k days of course) and then they were going to end on that high note. Because then they are going to be in their late 40's and not have the same energy for Tool and work on different projects. Just a theory. This might be the last you never know so soak it up now.

They are "quitting" in a way, how I see it. Undertow/Opiate fans, I think the next album will please you.

I agree. I'm beginning to think that they are indicating a new direction.
Death (this album) and resurrection (next album).

Danny's trapping something (closing the lid?)

Maynard is offering us wine (last drinks?)
Adam has a skeleton over his shoulder (death of the band?)
This is an album that features death/departure/division heavily.
Are these clues?
Vicarious: "sing to the deathrattle"
Jambi: "I might as well be gone..."
I had a few more connections, but the ones I've already mentioned are the strongest. I know that speculation like this is really asking for it, but this is my possible answer for the "album artwork puzzle" and a rough interpretation/misinterpretation of the lyrics.
I'm just throwing this out there, I don't believe in it myself (and honestly, why would you want to?) but it sent a shiver through me when I first conjured it up.

Right. And I guess that the "Nirvana: Unplugged" record/performance was a subtle public suicide note for Cobain?
