I'm wondering if that is a reference to David Blane and his floating illusion. I've seen it and it does seem so real.

Actually i was watching the Ali G show the other day and caught the episode where he’s talking about "dangerous drugs" (you could probably find the clip on youtube) with some expert, anyhow , during the segment of him joking about the effects of LSD (i think), he asked "yes, but how does it make you fly?" , he then goes on to mention how his friend dave took some and floated away (to the market i think) , just an interesting bit , since a lot of rosetta stoned seems to be referencing to outside and inside jokes.
Just a funny thought.

Not to mention, assuming the story is loosely based on a person they know and his/her experience, he may be quoting some lines directly from the other guy's story.
The guy might have been telling them the story of what happened and said, 'Dude, it was so real, like the time Dave floated away'
Now, I dunno who Dave actually is, but I don't think he was in the actual story, I think he was a previous event that the storyteller was simply drawing comparison to in order to convey the realness of the situation to the listener.
Obviously, the audience of the storyteller knew about the time 'Dave floated away' and so they could relate to how real it seemed even though it defied logic or sensibility.
Is anyone getting this?

This interested me. A favorite band of mine - Underworld - plays a song called "Pearls Girl" Here are the lyrics:
rioja. rioja. reverend al green. deep blue morocco. the water on stone.
the water on concrete. the water on sand. the water on fire. smoke.
the wind. the salt. the bride boat coming. dave in the water.
old man. einstein on top of his house. white deep blue
andalusia red yellow red yellow black car. red light.
far. black place. walls. blue chair. morocco. hamburg. paris.
the pieces of the puzzle are waiting. the water of the dark boats gliding.
the bride boats gone out to sea and dave is floating.
dave is floating. and old man einstein crazy in his attic. crazy.
white room. sun room. shadow room. night transmitting cars across the room.
these things sent to dance across the room. eye watching from your bed.
returning to you.
rioja. rioja. reverend al green. deep blue morocco. the water on stone.
the water on concrete. the water on sand. the water on fire. smoke.
the wind. the salt. the bride boat coming. dave in the water.
old man. einstein on top of his house. white deep blue
andalusia red yellow red yellow black car. red light.

Toolband.com Newsletter March 2006
"And then I saw Dave. At first I thought it was just a mirage, but there he was in his van with the Phish sticker, door beads, and embroidered tapestries. I recognized him by his frizzy hair, dressed in a tie-dye tee, Baja hoodie and hemp pants, with the familiar Birkenstocks, kicking the hackiesack. So, the biker gangs didn't scare all the hippies away after all. They were back! Looking at him, I realized that Dave was the kind of guy who would hold tightly in his palm a certain piece of metal while repeating the word "Kazik." Well, at least he'd put something in that pipe of his and smoke it."
(picture of some guy sitting on a giant rock with "TOOL 10,000 Days" Graffiti)
"Watching him there in the bright sun, I had a flash of insight. Again I recalled the message of the Clarionite, Aura Rhanes: "The water of your deserts will mostly be tears." And didn't a spaceman tell 50s contactee Orfeo Angelucci that the earth was called "The home of sorrows." Were the space brothers with their funny names speaking in a cipher - messages coming from the Nation of the Third Eye? And was it time to finally understand now that the Giant Rock had split in two. Is that why the "Sage of Giant Rock" - he who left us a wonderful device for physical rejuvenation (with its non-metallic framework) - Van Tassel's communications came from "The Council of the Seven Lights?" And now, Dave, too, was dialing in wave-lengths. But I had to wonder whether or not if he ever managed to separate the true vibrations from the discords if someone would have to change him like a baby."

I always assumed the "like the time Dave floated away" line was just further evidence for the fact that the narrator is obviously stoned out of his mind.

I was thinking about this the other day and i reckon it's got to be the character Dave Lister on Red Dwarf. I don't know how somethingg can be compaired to that though, as being real!
It's a fucking funny show anyway, if you haven't watched it, check it out!

That's interesting but, those lyrics don't make the slightest bit of sense. You may as well put a bunch of words in a hat and randomly pull them out while you write.

I thought this was commonly known by now. There's another newsletter in which a fan asks either "who is dave" or it was "who's the song about" and the response was basically this guy named Dave that is either a friend of or an acquaintance of Maynards. Now I wish all you people would quit fuckin' pulling all these crazy theories out your asses.....pull your head on out of it

January 2006 Newsletter, the ouija one, refers to Rosetta Stoned in an anagram, points out that the 'D' in the anagram stands for Dave, and that Dave drives a van.
"...but there he was in his van...."
Case closed. Time to move on.
......Or it could be about my local butcher, whos name is Dave.

That could be easily flipped! It seems you've got Colbert Syndrome, if something's sufficient enough for you it's law.

You're right; it's a completely batshit theory to suppose that, in lieu of an interview where Maynard mentions a guy named "Dave", Dave might have just been an arbitrary name used to help bolster the notion that the narrator is high. Please forgive me, my lord!

Like i would bother. I'm not sure if you caught the Stephen Colbert reference, but i was talking about your opinion that we should pull our heads out of our asses! As if you're some guardian of the truth and that because other ideas differ from yours, that they must be wrong. If someone can relate an idea or something they've come across to the song why shouldn't they post it here? Surely not because it doesn't sit right with you, the unofficial lord of reason.
Here's a bit of info about the show Red dwarf and the main character Dave Lister.
"The mining ship Red Dwarf is a spaceship 6 miles (10 km) long, 5 miles (8 km) tall, and 4 miles (6 km) wide belonging to the Jupiter Mining Corporation. In the first episode, an on-board radiation leak of Cadmium II kills everyone except for low-ranking technician Dave Lister, who is in suspended animation at the time, and his pregnant cat, Frankenstein, who is safely sealed in the cargo hold. Following the accident, the ship's computer Holly has to keep Lister in stasis until the background radiation dies down — a process that takes three million years. Lister therefore emerges as the last human being in the universe" Wiki.
Now i'd tell the actual meaning behind Rosetta Stoned, but 'No free rides'!

He never said they DID incorporate it genius. He was just making a reference to it himself. Go back to school, your parents were right.

LOL, and what's your fuckin point? That has absolutely no reletivety, similarity or even cognitive thought to make a reference to the character Dave in RS.

LMAO, I'm stupid? You must be some fucking 17yr old pot head highschool dropout to come up with such an elaborate response as this.
Is there ONE person in this thread that thinks his post about a spaceship had ANYthing to do with Rosetta Stoned?

It’s hard to know what to respond with when you’re talking to parrots!
It’s a simple link to RS that may or may not be correct, that’s an example of someone else being individualised in something momentous. Is that the point of that line? I’m sure you could realize that he floated away while he was in suspended animation. ‘Being a spaceman, floated about’ ha ha wanker!
Honestly, you two are way off track…I’d start questioning my motives if I were you.

The Dave in this song is none other than David Letterman. Blair from the TOOL page is prophetic and he had a vision during the writing of 10kdays. A star dropped from the black night and told him the television writers were going to strike. When Blair went to the recording studio to check in on the guys and their progress, they were jamming Rosetta Stoned and Maynard was working out the lyrics. Blair relayed his revelation to the band members, saying that a higher power had informed him the writers would strike and there would be no more Letterman, Leno or Conan ... Dave would just float away. Maynard liked the image of Letterman floating away and scurried back to his pen and paper to incorporate that into the song.
When the narrator of Rosetta Stoned says "Bob help me" he's talking about Don Imus, the "I-man." Letterman and Imus are friends and Letterman jokingly refers to Imus as Bob for some reason yet to be revealed to Blair by a star.
If you do a really thoughtful, detailed analysis of nearly all of TOOL's lyrics you'll see that it all comes back to Letterman in some way. Eulogy is about Letterman. Opiate is about the need for Letterman to save television. Prison Sex is really about feeling violated that Letterman is not on 24 hours a day. Lateralus was designed to take us on a spiritual journey to discover the greatness of Letterman.
So, there you have it. Now you know who Dave is.
