The reason I love this song

This song is one of Tool's best work in my opinion. The song really is self explanitory, yet has one of the deepest meanings. It reminds me of how I feel about "Crawl Away" on Undertow...it's a great song, and it's self explanitory...

The only thing that isn't self explanitory is the 46 & 2 thing..which, as we all know..the human race is at 44&2...blah blah blah. You know the theory.

But yeah, this song isn't hard to interpret at all.

It's about evolving...picking off your scabs, and digging into your wounds, and learning from them...changing...

Kind of a pointless post, I know.

Just my 2 cents...

Re: The reason I love this song

yeah, i agree, i think it uses the whole jungian deeely as a metaphore for reinventing yourself, or entering a new stage of life. The whole "diggin through my old muscles lookin for a clue"-and so on- riffs, i think, are about thinking very deeply about your values and what you cherish, also about what you are lookin for in life, or maybe he's lookin for a reason that life exists?

Re: The reason I love this song

There are many reasons I love this song. First off, it is very deep. I like that, makes you think. Second, the actual musical part of the song is outstanding...love it. And lastly, if you ever watch the Wilkes Barre 24.09.01 concert on youtube, (http://youtube.com/watch?v=_yd1e302Y1c) at about 4:40 he does this AWESOME stomp-dance...amazing...I love Maynard.

Re: The reason I love this song

I love this song more then i do my own mother. The into pulls me into a place where I'm safe yet vulnerable and prepares me for the change within myself. This songs lyrics string a certain chord in me that i can only scarcely understand the depth of them. "Ive be wallowing in my own confused insecure delusions" is by far the best Maynard line ever. oh and did i mention EVER, sorry i cant stress that enough EVER!!!!!!!!!!

Re: The reason I love this song

I like how every tool song has a meaning, too some way different than too the next. for me, i'd say its about me not living upto my potental, an remebering back when i was at the peak of my excellence in life, love, anything, an going further and beyond that point. we can all evolve in every aspect of human existence. it's just how we Learn to evolve.

Big HEY to someone from Danny's stomping grounds (pun intended). I'd have to agree on this masterpiece is Tool's best. I agree about the evolving theory. Just listen to Lateralus...follows the same concept about how things start out simple then become more complex the more we analyze when we grow. Not to mention it's just one of those songs that grab you right away. Need I say more....a perfectly balanced song. Sorry for rambling.....

how about Lateralus? I have to go straight to Lateralus and then back to The Grudge. I can't get enough the end from Danny. That gong hit gets me everytime.

But yes, all the reasons above are just a few of many qualities of this song. It is almost my favorite song of all-time (#2 on the list in fact) because of the fucking glorious bassline. All of my other reasons are secondary.

Thank God. You had me worried man. Every track means something...if you dont listen to it...How will you survive your journey? People that skip through Tool songs should be banned from this world. Its ok if your skipping nickelback songs because your not on a epic journey...ya know? haha peace man

I beLIEve that this song has to be about his son, to see him as a shadow of himself. I see my own son in this matter, When i'm standing brushing my teeth and i look in the mirror an see that short past version of me. I love to see our shadows next to each other. I wouldn't be hear without my son. and sometime when i think of all the things i have done for him as a father, I pick my old scabs and think of what my father NEVER did for me.THAT PIECE OF SHIT. and it hurts sometimes, just to know that i will never be like my father. I WILL BE BETTER..

Lol, the 46&2 chromosone thing is ridiculous.

Extra chromosones = DOWNSYNDROME!
Downsyndrome does NOT equal consciousness expansion, it equals shitting your pants everyday and constantly wanking for all to see!

Seriously, be careful if you want to take meaning from TOOL, you will be mislead.

How good's your math? Let's try a quick test. 44 + 1 = ?

I don't put much stock into the whole "46 chromosomes will set us free" mindset, but to be honest, nobody fucking knows what having 46 chromosomes would do, notwithstanding the question of which chromosomes are copied / added in the first place. You don't fucking know either. Shut the fuck up.

I respectfully disagree with your interpretation, but that doesn't make you wrong! I'd never try to rob you of what the music and lyrics mean to you, and you might be right. As for myself, though, I can't see it that way. I, too, have a young son and I know that there are some songs (H., Jambi) in which Maynard clearly refers to his relationship with Devo, but I'm pretty certain 46&2 is solely about Maynard's personal growth and his need to move past the old and bad and find a new way ... he needs to step through the lurking, ominous shadow of a bad past and into the "other side".

Re: The reason I love this song

i believe that it is based on Jung's theory that everytime we evolve, we gain two chromosomes, 46+2, so he's in the process of evolving, as are we all. The muscle memory, i think is based on the theory that memory is passed down, or inherited, just like traits from our parents, so he's listening to his "muscle memory" to find out how he/everything came to be or where it all came from.
