I'm wondering if that is a reference to David Blane and his floating illusion. I've seen it and it does seem so real.

Actually i was watching the Ali G show the other day and caught the episode where he’s talking about "dangerous drugs" (you could probably find the clip on youtube) with some expert, anyhow , during the segment of him joking about the effects of LSD (i think), he asked "yes, but how does it make you fly?" , he then goes on to mention how his friend dave took some and floated away (to the market i think) , just an interesting bit , since a lot of rosetta stoned seems to be referencing to outside and inside jokes.

Just a funny thought.

Not to mention, assuming the story is loosely based on a person they know and his/her experience, he may be quoting some lines directly from the other guy's story.

The guy might have been telling them the story of what happened and said, 'Dude, it was so real, like the time Dave floated away'

Now, I dunno who Dave actually is, but I don't think he was in the actual story, I think he was a previous event that the storyteller was simply drawing comparison to in order to convey the realness of the situation to the listener.

Obviously, the audience of the storyteller knew about the time 'Dave floated away' and so they could relate to how real it seemed even though it defied logic or sensibility.

I always assumed the "like the time Dave floated away" line was just further evidence for the fact that the narrator is obviously stoned out of his mind.

The Dave in this song is none other than David Letterman. Blair from the TOOL page is prophetic and he had a vision during the writing of 10kdays. A star dropped from the black night and told him the television writers were going to strike. When Blair went to the recording studio to check in on the guys and their progress, they were jamming Rosetta Stoned and Maynard was working out the lyrics. Blair relayed his revelation to the band members, saying that a higher power had informed him the writers would strike and there would be no more Letterman, Leno or Conan ... Dave would just float away. Maynard liked the image of Letterman floating away and scurried back to his pen and paper to incorporate that into the song.

When the narrator of Rosetta Stoned says "Bob help me" he's talking about Don Imus, the "I-man." Letterman and Imus are friends and Letterman jokingly refers to Imus as Bob for some reason yet to be revealed to Blair by a star.

If you do a really thoughtful, detailed analysis of nearly all of TOOL's lyrics you'll see that it all comes back to Letterman in some way. Eulogy is about Letterman. Opiate is about the need for Letterman to save television. Prison Sex is really about feeling violated that Letterman is not on 24 hours a day. Lateralus was designed to take us on a spiritual journey to discover the greatness of Letterman.

So, there you have it. Now you know who Dave is.
