we can infer from reading the lyrics that it was probably written with emotion.
Listening to the music alone does not give us that same impression.

If something is mentioned on this forum, its much more likely than not unimportant.

It doesn't matter what the songs are about. Listen to "I'm Not Okay", especially at this part "But you really need to listen to me
Because I'm telling you the truth
I mean this, I'm okay!"
He's emotional! the songs are emotional! * THEY SUCK BALLS*

i have been playing gutiar for almost 4 years now, i think this album bass and guitarwise is awesome, and beats 99% of the stuff out there. The vocals are up to par with lateralus, and the drums, even though slightly held back, are phenominal in the parts where danny lets loose. Trust me, danny's drumming is far harder than it sounds.

Actually, this is Danny's worst playing since Green Jello. Sure, it's not simple, but WAY dumbed down by his standards. So are the vocals. The only thing that has actually improved is Adam. Maybe that's why he is twice as loud as everyone else on this one?
I still believe something else is coming--if not, then they have given up on themselves.

I think you all are out of your f'in minds. I get so frustrated with all these people bashing tools playing. Are you kidding? I've played guitar for 10 years and been in many bands, PROFESSIONAL bands. I am a PRO career musician. I must state that cause everyone that strums an acoustic can come in here and say "I play guitar too and...". It seriously always pisses me off when people downplay what tool does. I don't care what school you come from or what your background is, Tool is not "that easy" to play. Maybe you can play some guitar or bass riffs, sure I can too. I can play Aenima (the whole album) note for note from beginning to end. What I CAN'T do is get into a complete band that can recreate their works as a whole perfectly (not that I try too because I'm not in a cover band, I play ORIGINAL music, and not some hack attempt at others). It may be "fun" to be in a cover band but when a packed house that has never heard you before erupts after you play an original work it's MUCH more rewarding I can assure you.
I've been to a thousand shows I'm sure, local, nationally, world wide. Do you know how many cover bands I've seen attempt Tool? I mention this in the Vicarious thread as well, but they don't pull it off as well as tool. NOT EVEN CLOSE! Now you may think I haven't seen a good one yet, but believe me, I've seen ones at the top of their game. One of the best one's I've seen is right here in Baltimore. I'm sure 90% of people would agree when you see a band cover tool it's never close. Something ALWAYS lacks. A lot also has to be said for the writing. As I stated earlier Aenima isn't that difficult to master. It came from a time before he used so many time signature changes and such. I could play it all day and night but I OBVIOUSLY can't write something that is better and that is WHERE I SHUT UP AND YOU SHOULD AS WELL. It isn't always the technical side that needs to be addressed. That lame ass guitarist Michaelangelo can shred better than anyone I've EVER seen, but obviously no one really cares. His forum has about 18 members who post once a year. Now one of you in here (Oberon i think) has 1,000 posts in a TOOL forum in under a month? You must love and appreciate tool to be here. You shouldn't say how easy it is. I'm sorry but again I think it makes ANYONE look foolish who says that. Obviously you can't do anything better cause I haven't heard of you and neither has anyone else. There aren't tens of thousands of people a month posting in YOUR forum about how your music has touched them.
And here is where the challenge comes in....in this forum, I CHALLENGE ANYONE to put up some links of the stuff THEY write and record. I mean lets hear it. Tool is so simple, lets hear your masterpiece that you are waiting to unleash on the world. I'm sure everyone in this forum would LOVE to hear it. It's SO easy to click a few keys and say "I can do this, I can do that" I can "blow maynard away, dannies drumming is simple on this album, JC's basslines are weak, Adam can't play guitar"....lol yeah RIGHT! It also has to do with the touch you give an instrument, the tone that comes from your fingers. You might be able to play a tool bassline note by note, but can you make it SOUND like a tool bassline?
I have a nice studio in my house (check my links) and go to an amazing studio to cut my pro recordings. I work with a producer/engineer that is known on national level. I'd LOVE to find some talent that can surpass what tool does. Lets hear what everyone on this forum has got, come on, don't be scared. Anyone, guitar, bass, drums, vocals, lets hear it. I'll even go first. Check my link to the myspace.com/tillthedaysend. That is my studio, and the song playing I wrote and is my band. That is where I'm at muscially.
Next up....

As a rebuttal, i go to Berklee school, and a band recently did a tool cover show, and they only had one rehearsal before they played the show... and it was AMAZING.
-- Noone's saying the original music is lame. We're just saying its also fun to play in cover groups =P

It should also be noted that with regards to it needing to be played with a certain touch Adam is also a MASTER of effects. His subtle use of Flange, Delay, Talkbox, etc. is always dead on. Has anyone seen his board he uses live? There must be 100 pedals on there, not to mention a waist level joystick and controller that does god knows what. I'd bet anyone plugging into that board would look pretty clueless as to whats going on, especially if it failed to produce a sound and you had to troubleshoot it. Just another point to make regarding the level they are at and how "easy" it is.
I also asked for proof. You SAY you saw a tool cover band and it was amazing (I'm sure you saw a tool cover band). I put out the challenge because I want to see it. Is there any video of it? Lets post some stuff up here to see. I SPECIFICALLY WANT TO SEE THOSE WHO EARLIER IN THIS THREAD STATED IT WAS EASY AND THEY COULD DO IT TO POST. Please...enlighten me...I really want to see who in here can cash the check their mouth wrote.

There's no proof, that i know of. If i find a tape i'll post it. It wasn't perfect, the bassist was a little off, but it was damn close. they nailed the intro to eulogy.
DEP rocks.
if we're talking effects, we're talking King Crimson and there's no arguing.

Hmm.
I've always been less impressed with the performance end of the whole "Write, record, perform" method. The only thing less impressive then performing is recording.
Writing is where the real work is. And just because the music isn't complex to play doesn't mean the writing is excellent.
Find me a JPSousa piece that's hard to play (psst, there are none).... yet he has some quality pieces (not many, in comparison to the quantity he wrote, but he does have a few very excellent compositions).

Listen to "California Uber Alles". Do you deny thats a great song? But it probably took like 10 seconds to write.

you said writing is where the real work is. I was just saying, a song like that doesn't take much work to write. they probably had it written and rehearsed to perfection in like 2 practice sessions max.

I'm not 100% sure what I think of that Dead Kennedys song, mostly because I don't really like the Dead Kennedys that much, however...
There's little correlation between time invested and work required or quality of end result.
The point I'm trying to make is, there real beauty of music is in the writing part of it.
Compare the number of people in the world who can PLAY a musical instrument well to the number of people in the world who can WRITE great music.
Compare the number of people in the world who can READ a book, a poem, etc. to the number of people in the world who can WRITE a great book, poem, etc.

I see your point, but i think you are WAY underestimating performance. If the beach boys had played california uber alles then the song would've blown. See what i mean?
(beach boys rock btw)
