69

i have just noticed some sort of inclination for this number across the album, from the track 69 disgustipated, and the length of the album 69:13 minutes
also i have realized that when you open the booklet, the images of the fat lady face each other in a perfectly clear 69

Seems to me that this is just because at the time, 69 was the "cool" number. They just wanted a "cool" number. As you can see, they also used 13, another "cool" number.

Thirteen was used in how long the music is: 69:13.

Zulehan -- that may have made sense for a mediocre band unlike Tool, but do you really think they would use the number sixty-nine just because it's "cool"?

six and nine

of course the 69 number was not used just for being "cool"
and neither was 666 The Gaping Lotus Experience
come on, this is not korn...
perhaps what the number 69 means is linked to the position, for it is kind of a reciprocus cycle, you suck me i suck you suck me...
sort of "life feeding on life", if you think about it
and also, 69 position represents some kind of equalty, as no one is penetrated by the other, there is no difference, well, you all know how it works...

69 as one (as in pushed together) makes the infinite symbol (the sideways 8 thing).....(at least that's what I've seen the symbol to be.............) I don't think it's some infinite reference though.

69 looks like a Yin Yang. The holes of the 6 and 9 make up the holes in the Yin Yang.

whenever i look at 69 i always think of the astrological sign of cancer sideways.

and yes, the sideways eight is the sign of infinaty used in math

69

The recurring 69 has always been much more to me than just coincidence. The obvious numerical idea is just one aspect of the concept, but there is another way to look at 69 that has not been mentioned here yet.

69 is the sign for Cancer in the Zodiacal system of symbols, and Cancer is a WATER sign. This is fairly relevant because the theme of the album is very much water-oriented.

If this thought has brought any light (or darkness) to any of your minds, let me know. Relating the 69 to the zodiacal cancer didn't enhance the album in any way for me, but it definately was something that led me to take a closer look at the water theme of Undertow.

No, I don't think Tool would do this. But who's to say it was their decision? Maybe they didn't care really where the CD ended, so they just let a producer fix up the numbers.

Sorry about the late reply.

The water theme makes sense, and I think the "life feeding on life" which I was about to mention til I saw it already up is also a part of the theme. Tool is many-layered, as we obviously know, so it could be the sexual position, the life feeding on life, and the water aspect all at once, plus perhaps many other things.
