Or would you recommend waiting for further announcements from a certain band's website concerning other possible performances that may or may not require one to wade through a sea of patchouli and indie rock, in order to hear the sweet sounds of aloke dutta-inspired tabla magic mixed with tuned down D strings?
I don't have any concrete knowledge, and in fact haven't even been told "officially" that they are doing Lollapalooza, but based on past history, Tool don't usually do just a one-off without a few other shows surrounding it.

For the record, I'm so glad we finally have a rumor floating around here about Tool. If Tool plays at Lollapalooza this summer, I'm there. I'd really like to see Radiohead and NIN as well. It looks like a good list of bands as is. Adding Tool in the mix would really put it over the edge.

Radiohead and Nails played this gig last year, so I doubt they will be in a 2009 lineup with Tool.

You're right. It's the Beasties and Jane's Addiction this year.

I was on lollapalooza.com looking at the lineup. It must have been out of date. Oops.

Well, if they do in fact do "Lolla" and possibly other shows, the show(s) wouldn't be part of the "10,000 Days" tour, right? Something more along the lines of the 1998 shows and Coachella in 1999?

TOOL SUMMER TOUR

I'm sure many of you have heard of an upcoming summer tour. Although I can't announce any specific dates yet (as the bulk of the dates haven't been confirmed), once they are finalized and official, we'll be sure to announce them on the site. So... be on the lookout for these dates to be posted soon, and get ready for live Tool this summer. (Now I understand what that elemental was referring to in the February newsletter)

The Pee-Wee's playhouse word of the day, all one word, is: holyfuckingshit. That's bad ass, a non-album related tour?! Perhaps a make-up for the lack of variety of the "10,000 Days" tour? I'm all tingly...in the pants.

Ah, 'tis for real my friend, you are not dreaming or over-indulging on hallucinogens. Well, if you are over-indulging it's cool because you got that going for you AND a Tool tour this summer so...well, yeah.

Words escape me brothers (and sisters). I'm... well damn. This means.. I don't know! But if I thought they were really going to trot out the oldies, then... damn... good thing I held onto my job even though I wanted to quit! See? I knew there was a reason I was holding onto it!

Now, all that said, if all Tool is doing is festivals it is certainly not ALL good news. First off, the usually only play for about 75 minutes at festivals. I don't doubt even for a minute that if Tool wanted to play a full 2 hours that there would not be a festival promoter in the world who would deny them. I blame Jimmy for this. He holds his fans in such contempt, that he won't... ah damn. Tool! I can't wait! Now announce dates so I can make travel plans.

I'm personally hoping that it's a festival/arena minitour like they did in '98. Most shows were for Ozzfest but they did do some Tool-only shows as well. As the long as the set list isn't:

Jambi
Stinkfist
Forty-Six & 2
Schism
Rosetta Stoned
Flood
Wings1+2
Lateralus
Vicarious

It will be worth it.

I'm pretty sure that even the band themselves aren't sure what the setlist will be just yet. I doubt they'll put any serious thought into it until shortly before it starts. Personally, I hope it's different than what was on the tour, but who knows.

Indeed. I doubt they have give it much thought just yet. Hell, I am shocked they even decided to do this! They have so many options here. But you know- if I had my druthers, I'd love to just see new material from them. I am not nostalgic at all. Don't get me wrong, I wet my shorts (ew) with joy when they launched into Pushit for the first time in SD on the last tour. But ultimately I more curious what these guys have in their heads right now.

Oh, and btw, if the Killers have no problem with Tool going on after them at Lolla... I am pretty sure they won't have any problem with them going on after at Coachella! Come on! Dreams do come true sometimes! (already have a 3 day pass to Coachella)

I don't like festivals, in general.
They're not very festive, from my point of view.

I don't think it will be all festivals, but I don't know what any of the shows are yet. They're still working that out, as far as I know. I doubt I'll know the exact dates before anyone else hears about it.

I am stunned and speechless.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them to play Third Eye. I've seen Tool 7 times now and Third Eye has never been on the setlist for me.
I wonder where this puts the prospect of a new album? I know beggars can't be choosers, but I'd like to hear some new work.

Junior,
You mentioned a while back that there is a revolutionary new lighting technology that is being released soon. You said that you wanted to implement it the next time Tool went on tour. Any chance we'll get to see it this summer?
If you need me to refresh your memory, I can dig through your old posts and find it.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)

one year they were going to release an album called gullable at midnight, and they phrased it so it only included the day of the week that april fools day landed on.

one year they postponed tour dates to find an ancient Mayan symbol

and way back when kabir posted on toolshed that three band members were critcally injured in a highway bus accident. that one made it on the radio.

and yah.. maynard found jesus.

it would be pretty hilarious if they released a bunch of tour dates in no name towns. i hope its not the case, but the more i think about it - the more suspicious it is.

I went back and found the post you were talking about (I think). The search doesn't work as well as I'd hoped, so it took awhile.
It was from last May, and it's the technology I thought you were talking about in the first place.

Anyway.....

As far as I know, that technology still isn't ready for the real world. I haven't been in touch with the developers, but I think if it was ready we would have seen it by now somewhere else, so there is still a chance it will make it's way into a future Tool tour.

I don't know exactly what we are going to do for the summer shows. I'm still waiting to find out what venues they'll be in.

I don't like festivals, in general.
They're not very festive, from my point of view.

Agreed. I went to Coachella a couple years back for the 10,000 Days tour kick off, and aside from TOOL it was a pain in the ass. Would much rather catch them at a TOOL-only show. That way they can set up all their own lights, visuals, stage, etc.. And like someone else posted, they usually play a longer set by themselves.

<fingers crossed> Hope they kick it off again at the Pearl!

I'm not speaking from the standpoint of an attendee, so my experience at them is a bit different.

Festivals are a great place for bands that "just get up there and play". I'm not knocking that approach. It's perfectly suitable for a lot of bands.
In recent history more bands are trying to achieve "their show" in a festival setting, and that is where the headaches start. At most festivals there is a default "house production" (the lights and sound) that everyone uses. Quite often it was designed with the promotors pocketbook in mind more than anything else. The light rig is usually either designed to look a lot bigger than it really is (like a puffer-fish) and not actually be all that useful, or it's just a very standard boring setup, or it's some crazy exotic thing that someone thought would look cool for the event. In any case, it makes it difficult to replicate the bands "vision". Often times the sound system suffers a similar fate.
So you have a touring show that took a fair amount of time to program and get it to the point where you are happy with it and you go to a festival and try to replicate it on completely wrong gear in a fraction of the time. You simply don't end up with the show you are trying to achieve. I've very rarely been pleasantly surprised with the results, and usually just try to forget it ever happened.
That might sound spoiled, but I just prefer the controlled environment of doing your own shows with your own stuff. Sometimes a festival will allow you to bring in all of your own equipment, or at least some of it. Even in a situation where you are just adding a backdrop, some video screens, and some floor lights you are usually met with some opposition from the organizers or you are met with a fair amount of grumbling for being a "difficult" act. In the case of Bonnaroo 2007, it worked out to where the festival agreed to not set up their lighting system until after Tool played, and we were also able to go in the night before and put our touring system in place. Had we played there Saturday that wouldn't have been the case. They were very accommodating. The sound company was the same one that Tool uses (Eight Day Sound), so the system was similar to the one we were touring with, and that made it a lot easier on the sound department.

It's not just my little part of the show that has to compromise. The sound guys usually have to deal with a local system engineer that won't let them have as much freedom as they have with their touring system, and they probably won't get enough time to tune the PA to their liking. On top of that, it might be suffering from budgetary concerns and just isn't up to snuff. Sound and lighting consoles have to be trekked out through the crowd before and after the show, usually through mud. Production and Tour Managers have to compromise their office, dressing room, and catering situations and a lot of the things they need to keep the show running smoothly. Security doesn't have their normal operating procedures for how the backstage area is run. Bus and truck parking is often fought over with other bands, and can end up being nowhere near the stage. Bathroom facilities are usually pretty bad, and good luck finding a shower. Guitar and drum technicians don't get the space they need, and have to "hurry up" with their set-up in between bands. This can be pretty stressful and lead to equipment failures and mistakes. If the guitar or bass rigs have a lot of technical particulars (pedals, etc.) it can be a nightmare for the guitar tech.

There's a lot more, but I would go on for ages (if I haven't already).

Not all festivals are such a downer, but the good ones really are the exception.

I just don't find festivals to be very enjoyable on the tech end of it. That's all.

As a fan, I am not very fond of festivals. But I do make an exception for Coachella. That festival is very well produced overall.

Street Scene was what did me in for festivals for the most part. God damn that one sucked. Good line up the year I went but the place (a parking lot) was just brutal, not to mention people getting crushed during Tool's set.
