50 x 50 is pretty damn small IMO, I think 64 or 75 would be better since it allows for avatars with decent amounts of detail and mb even writing :)

If you're worried about bandwidth then leave the file size as it is, an internet user worth their salt can get their avatar comfortably within 5k

With the bigger avatars, you might want to implement prereq constraints. Say, for example, no avatars allowed until you complete x posts, or until x days have elapsed after registration. That way you would eliminate storing the avatars for lurkers or 1 dayers.
