PUSHIT
[NEW SONG]
JERK-OFF
H.
[NEW SONG]
TICKS & LEECHES
SOBER
PARABOL/PARABOLA
[NEW SONG]
AENIMA

Re: Ideal Coachella setlist

with the setlists most of you provided, you'd think they were playing for 3 hours. Wouldn't a festival setlist only go for about 1hr - 1.5hrs?

Re: Ideal Coachella setlist

My ideal set list (see above) would likely require two four hour sets minimum, not including bathroom breaks for the band, as well as meals and stretching for everyone. Rather than headlining Coachella, it should just be the Tool festival. Maybe a relatively brief opening set by Clutch.

they should play every single one of their songs ever through a DJ set at 10x the normal speed so that it fits into a 2 hour show.

Thanks for the heads-up, brah. It can be fun to be imaginative once in a while, even if you know you'll set yourself up for disappointment. BTW, my list beats the hell out of Grudge>stinkfist>schism>sober>46&2>prison sex or something featuring the "popular" tracks.

Tool really should start playing 2 set shows. I guess they sort of tampered with that last tour with the whole intermission followed by 3 or 4 long tracks. Either two set shows or playing Aenima in its entirety (how bad ASS would that be??)

Expectations of live shows?

This can be pretty broad, not only limited to the Coachella show and European tour but the rumoured U.S. ones as well (NYC, Seattle, Oakland). What do you think or expect Tool to perform/present at these? Obviously they'll be playing new material, but how much exactly? The bulk of the set, a few here and there sprinkled amidst their older hits? I'm curious to see what kind of visual themes they're going to be working with this time around. I honestly don't know how they could top the Alex Grey backdrops/screen projections. If anyone could though I suppose it would be them. Let's hope it doesn't get Bono extravaganza-like though. Wouldn't expect that from them though. Actually I'd prefer more minimalist this time around, emphasizing music over everything else. The syncopated light show and color themes should remain intact though imo. Give me your thoughts on what you'd like to see visually as well as the setlist.

Mostly new material. My expectations for the album went down based on the names, but if it rocks then I'll be front row. Sucks = back.

Re: Expectations of live shows?

The one thing I feel spoiled by after having seen many not-so-popular, smaller venue bands is the ability to have a great vantage of the band no matter where you are in the house. I thought one of the rumors related to the Seattle show had to do with them playing the Paramount, which is definetely not an arena or stadium-like venue. As a matter of fact its where they played with King Crimson on their promotional west coast tour in 2001. That would be a dream to see them in a smaller venue but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Is funny how people choose tracks for the new album even if they haven't heard it yet.

I hope Vicarious wiil be a great opener anyway. The Grudge was killer imo.

Re: Expectations of live shows?

i hope they pull their full set on the European tour (both visually and musically). Gigs in Germany are more than a month after the release date, so probably they'll play a lot of new stuff. Also, the 6/6/6 show in Hamburg could be special. They say the acoustics at the local venue are shitty though.

I believe the Tshirt I have of the "Inside the Outside Tour" (the startup mini tour) had a Seattle date on it... I'd have to double check when it gets out of the laundry lol. But I was at the two Berkeley shows, and they were in a college theater, which was pretty cool. At the time it was damned exciting to see them in such an intimate venue, but when I went to subsequent shows later on in the tour... well, compared to their later shows, the Berkeley shows sucked. No video screens, no Alex Grey backdrops, and they just didn't have the musical and technical formula down right yet. Don't get me wrong, it fuckin' rocked to no end, but it's indescribable to be there when they extended Schism and Lateralus to the synched-lights and video images.

Again, I say they accomplished in the Lateralus tour to do to the eyes what they do to the ears. I want my goddamned live DVD so bad.

Ack, I'm all nostalic right now, watching a bootleg of that absolutely beautiful tour. I can't fathom how they're gonna top themselves this time... but I know they're gonna.

They will play mostly new stuff.... No band spends a year + on a new album, then just tours mostly the old stuff....
Also, i get the impression the tool experience will be as visual as ever before.. however, maybe not quite so at the festivals..

Kid...seriously? Are you joking around? Wow...this place never stops amazing me.

First off, lemme ask when you started really getting into TOOL?
Also, since when are any of their songs better than any other? You really can't argue with someone about what their favorite songs are. Besides, I saw the three songs you just listed like 4 times each last tour. They need to switch it up and bring the heat. I don't know if you can understand that or not. You ever seen TOOL?

What will they play...

Luckily for us, Tool is the kind of band that actually plays the majority of their new songs when they tour, as opposed to just playing the single and their old 'hits'. One thing occured to me, though. Once they hit the road with the new material from '10,000 Days', many of the 'old' songs will not be played.

My question is: What will be played? Given the fact that they usually play around 12-15 songs for about 2 hours, what will their setlist be? Here's your chance: Leaving out the new songs (which they will inevitably play), what 5-7 'older' songs (Lateralus-era and older) would you like then to keep in the setlist? Here's mine:

Sober
Stinkfist
Lateralus
Pushit
Parabol/Parabola
Prison Sex
Aenima

I'd prefer if they played a 3-hour show and dumped any opening act.

thank you for you truth and honesty. that's why i love this place. but in all seriousness, i think the live shows are going to be pretty great. i've seen tool numerous times and each time they get better and better. it also seems that as the years go by they have cloaked themselves in darkness more and more and put the music and art out front for us to enjoy. it's hard to say exactally what the screens and backdrops will contain. these usually depict similar stuff to the artwork on the album and the videos that AJ makes. seeing that we don't have any of this save for some small portion of the album art, i choose not to speculate. one thing i do expect are people who ruin the show for the rest of us by moshing and generally acting like complete jerks. that aside i can't wait. i live in cleveland, which is pretty centrally loacated to 4 or 5 major cities(Detroit, pittsburgh, cincinatti, indy and chicago), and i hope to see them in at least 3 of these.

so, my post was "somewhat similar" to this post, so it instantly gets moved into this post.

Actually, my post is not about "what they might play at Coachella", if whoever moved my post would have actually read my post.

That's about the most anal thing I've ever seen. Oh well...
