I've been reading these forums and I thought I would give the album a try.
It is simply amazing. I really liked Undertow, but this is so different. I knew from reading on here that the albums were pretty far apart in time, but I didn't realize how far apart in sound and style they could be. The drum solo in Ticks and Leeches is mind blowing.
Is each album this different?
I'm going to have to listen to this at home when I can really turn the headphones up!
wow! i kinda envy you- you have worlds to discover in front of you- enjoy (=
i started with aenima, then listened to opiate, then undertow, then lateralus came out, i saw them live and everything changed (it was one of the most mindblowing audio-visual experiences i had the honor to witness)...the last album is also wonderful!
edit: and i must see them live when they tour europe again...

lateralus is incredible; you have a world of discovery ahead of you. i can hardly believe how different my perception of the album is now compared to 2 years, 4 years, and 6 years ago. you can go very, very deep with tool; it's music for life.
I can't stop listening to it. I'm almost annoyed with myself at this point. I have never really been a fan boy of anything, but I am beginning to understand why someone would be.
I am thinking about buying another album. I'm not sure which one I should get. I could just go and randomly listen to songs on youtube, but there seems to be something about listening to the full album that makes it a completely different experience. I had heard Tool songs before I heard all of Undertow, of course, but one song on it's own doesn't really capture the feel that the albums have. I don't know what it is.
its absolutely subjective but: try aenima
edit: (almost) every tool-song works on its own but the albums are very special and make "the experience more complete"...if you know undertow you know what i mean...i love this thread and as i said i kinda envy you because i know the whole catalogue...still i find out more and more layers and everytime i listen to it i discover something different but its not that "fresh" anymore as it was ten years ago...you lucky bastard! listen to it (lateralus) over and over its just natural...

I can still remember the first time I listened to it all the way thru like it was yesterday. That's how impactful thier albums can be.
The album had only been out a month or so. I had listened to it in parts but not from front to back yet. A buddy and I had gone from Houston (where we live) up to Dallas to see Nevermore. Shortly after getting on the road for the 4 hour drive home at like 2 or 3 in the morning he fell asleep. So I put the disc in and let it play. At the end of the first round I couldn't hit repeat fast enough. After the second I knew I needed to hear it again, and again, and again. By the time we got home I realized this was an album that would be timless to me as long as I live. To this day while listening to Lateralus all I need to do is close my eyes and be transported to that fateful night on I-45.
lateralus took tool to a new level... pink floyd and led zeppelin level. they were on their way with aenima but lateralus solidified their status as one of the greatest bands of all time

My favorite album...took years to appreciate. Every song is fucking killer. The sounds, grooves, textures, moods they create...it's unbelievable to my ears.
