The Material World

I have no idea if this "thought" has been brought up so dont get pissed if its already but posted but, anyways, ive always thought of tool as a journey from the Material World to the Spiritual world from Sweat- Reflection its just one big story. Anyways, i think this song is about a last chance after being on the journey, whoever it is whos been taking it- hes now trying to live like he did in when he was a member of the the material world. And this is the moment when there is no turning back which calls upon "aenima" which i think is the crossing-over album. But stuff like "crumbling images that no longer comfort me" to me is a metaphor for trying the old way of your life and it just doesnt fit and after the flood whatever u had ("mine"), there's no turning back, cuz its all gonna b covered in water. Or, if u think Tool is drug band like my sister- its about trying to go live like u did before u were a wutever-addict.

Sure, i hate using the term "the man" but thats wut im talkin about. To me, tool is about this one person- not specifically maynard- leaving this world where we buy stuff and our slaves to ::sigh:: the man. But at this point- flood- he has left and been sucked under by a drug or undertow and decides to go back. But it fails, hes too informed to let himself stay here. I guess ill do a lyric by lyric thing:

"here comes the water"- the flood is coming, and the flood is what makes him totally breakthrough into the long path of conversion.

"All i Knew, and all i believed
are crumbling images that
no longer comfort me"
-the images are his past life before deciding to go on his journey to the spiritual world. But he used to be fine with them, but now hes unable to be comfortable.

"I scramble to reach higher ground,
some order and sanity,
or something to comfort me."
-He's scared to go back on his journey and trying to avoid the flood, but he needs something that makes sense.

"So I take what is mine, and hold what is mine,
suffocate what is mine, and bury what's mine"
-All that he owns in the material world he buries and leaves behind him.

"Soon the water will come
and claim what is mine.
I must leave it behind,
and climb to a new place now."
-As the flood takes away his stuff it takes him to finish the journey leaving the ruined path behind him. (theres no turning back)

"This ground is not the rock I thought it to be."
-Going back was a bad idea.

"Thought I was high, and free.
I thought I was there
divine destiny. "
-He thought he would be happy and had reached his destiny of spirituality, but...

"I was wrong.
This changes everything."
-now he has to go back on his journey.

"The water is rising up on me.
Thought the sun would come deliver me,
but the truth has come to punish me instead."
-He thought he would reach spirituality even if he stopped on the path, but the path is covered in water and the truth is punishing him in the form of a flood.

"The ground is breaking down right under me.
Cleanse and purge me
in the water."
- Well, there he goes to cross over (aenima)

tell wut u think**
