I like the cd a whole lot as well, its a lot darker than I originally expected, but it's still very good.
Either way, I'll go off of my last.fm profile, and my top 15 there are
1 Children of Bodom
2 Strapping Young Lad
3 Evergrey
4 Tool
5 In Flames
6 Devin Townsend
7 Lamb of God
8 It Dies Today
9 Trivium
10 Meshuggah
11 Tenacious D
12 Mitch Hedberg
13 Queens of the Stone Age
14 Static-X
14 As I Lay Dying
although it is heavily skewed towards Children Of Bodom, because my brothers keep listening to them, and last fm tracks all of it.

Love it. Been a Tool fan since about 3 months before Aenima was released. I hate listing bands that I like, but last.fm keeps track of all that for me: http://www.last.fm/user/flocker92/
I go from Johnny Cash and Queen to Necrophagist and Lamb of God.

Oberon - I have to say, I enjoyed your work in the Sejeff thread. Good stuff. *admiration*
That said -
The album is amusing, weird, outrageous and frequently hilarious. I like that. It's entertaining to listen to, and it makes me smile, and it makes me wonder just what the fuck I'm hearing.
That said, it says a great deal about the importance of structure in music. BECAUSE THERE ISN'T ANY.
There are several parts on the album that I'm sure almost everyone would agree are quite good, but without a context or frame of reference, it sounds like crap - the songs meander formlessly without any discernable logic. It adds to the hilarious stoned-out atmosphere for sure, but it's pretty fucking retarded from a musical standpoint. There isn't a single song here that is structured in any way that is appealing to me - it all sounds like some random jam.
I do like it, though, but that's only because I'm not taking it the least bit seriously.
Oddly enough, I usually give more leverage and offer more respect to stuff that doesn't take itself seriously as opposed to stuff that does. On principal alone, I'd pick this over Lateralus, which I consider to be completely humourless.
I'd compare the album to Cave-In's Jupiter. Something about the guitar reminds me of that album: The cosmic atmospherics and frequent lift-offs, I guess.
Anyway:

I'm sure that I am going to like 10,000 Days a lot better than Lateralus. Favorites at this moment: Rosetta Stoned and Right In Two.
I guess Tool is an outcast in my musical tastes...
Best album I know of by any band: Ænima
Other recent bands include:
Flaming Lips
Grandaddy (RIP)
Mercury Rev
Archive
Twilight Singers
I Am Kloot
Interpol
Madrugada (NO)
Arcade Fire
Washington (NO)
Coparck (NL)

Tindersticks

Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Modest Mouse, The Beatles, Sublime, classical, folk, JAZZ, blues, anything, pretty diverse ... Love Volto!, too, when I get the chance to see them.
As for why I like the album-- yeah, the album is structured strangely, and every song is a bit like a jam. Sure, it isn't as well put-together as Lateralus, but some of the songs and moods evoked on the album are just outstanding. A fine record- the "blues" record Danny Carey talked about with hints of Floyd, King Crimson, Zeppelin, Meshuggah. Crazy album musically (will probably never have the contextual greatness of Lateralus or Aenima), but for a lover of music an incredible piece of work.

i think that each individual song on this album is done very well. however i think the album as a whole leaves a lack of resolution...which could be totally intentional. the order could be better i think...but who am i to say..its not my album. id give every song on the album a high rating but the album as a whole feels very fragmented..but it could still be totally intentional. i can say that im not disappointed but i am a bit confused...i feel like they tied me to a string and let out more and more slack till the end of the album, and then just cut it to let me float off...which is kind of cool..but it needs to settle with me a bit more...its only a baby to me...
i listen to too much music to list...lots of stoner rock, doom, ambient, noise, avant-garde weirdness, jazz, tropicalia, 60s garage/psych., delta blues, electronic, hip hop, etc, etc, etc...

I like it because it doesn't remind of anything I know. Innovative. New. I don't need a point of reference to like things.

I think that the new album just doesn't have great songwriting or a lot of emotional, very powerful sections like on Lateralus and Aenima. The only exception is the title track, but even that seems kind of loosely put together in certain places and rambling a little at the end. Right in Two tries to be affecting but ends up sounding like APC, and very commercial and bland.
I'm not gonna list all my favorite music, but what I'm comparing 10,000 Days to is just Lateralus and Aenima. It just doesn't compare at all.

so... basically no obvious relation to certain bands/albums that would suggest certain music fans liking it, and other types of music fans not liking it...
worth a try i guess.
