Downtown

He was in that region between wake and sleep
In both connections there were pangs of deterioration
Subtle yet implacable
Everything that rises must converge
He tried to feel his heart
It was faint and weak, as if still asleep
Fuck it! It will catch up.
He sat for a spell in a corner nook
And eavesdropped on a phone conversation
The contents of which were being conveyed
The minute details of a life leaving this worldly plane
And then and then and then, goodbye
Whispers and sad tearless eyes
A quiet last lullaby
So he took to the concrete
His heart felt like steel and glass
Pumping pollution and waste
In the center he found purgatory, or
The mall's food court
A handicapped girl spun in circles
Her guardian or mother sipped coffee and waited for the seizure
Motorized carts for seniors and the invalid
Were parked hither skither at weird angles, haphazardly
The drivers squished into plastic seats
Munching and gnawing and chewing Mickey Ds
This morning McDonald's was offering free diabetes and heart disease
But the talk at the Invacare table revolved around diarrhea
Nothing seemed to matter
We all have our issues and worries
In front of the gold exchange shop
A street kid was dancing to orgasm
When he came he slumped back against the wall with an awe
And still no one seemed to care or notice
Society was busy checking their wallets and searching for bargains
Back on the street, the somnambulant drove vehicles
Shivering bicyclists dodged the zombies exhaling violently
The doomed curled in doorways sweating with pnemonia
He played hopscotch down the boulevard
Jumping puddles of puke and spilled poutine
He played soccer with the hypodermic needles
And the discarded oxycontin bottles
Pedestrians politely excused themselves
To get through the methadone lines
And in a fit of displaced frustration
He told a pretty girl with a Shopper's bag full of L'oreal
To just please watch where she was going and to perhaps FuckOff, then
When she rolled her heavily mascara'd eyes
And it was at that moment
His heart finally caught up with him
And he felt awake
That he looked around
And thought
What a beautiful day.

Re: Downtown

Haha! I love this man. It gives me visions. Makes me think of Palahniuk. I'm doing a short tour in Asheville, NC and have been roaming downtown on the weekends. I feel like I've seen or felt many of these things over the past two weeks.

Good stuff as always Gonz.
