i personally feel this song may be the best memorial ever constructed (as paired up with Wings for Marie). its better than any monument ever erected in someone's name, or any song ever written in someone's honor. im even quite convinced that only maynard could have written a song this powerful. i was reading in another thread that people get chills when listening to this song. i not only get chills, but i feal his anguish, his grief, and then his release. the song is almost like getting a giant monkey off your back. so many lyrics in this song raise such powerful feelings. i feel bad for maynard, and what happend to his mother. "ignorant fibbers in the congregation, gather 'round spewing sympathy, spare me. none of them could even hold a candle up to you..." i mean....wow. and further more "what are they gonna do when the lights go down, without you to guide them all to zion?" he hates the fact his mother put so much faith in god, and god left her the way he did. but she was faithful through "all the trials and the tribulations".
in "Wings" 1 line is really powerful to me:
so what have i done, to be the son of an angel, what i have done, to be worthy.
how many people have ever said that about someone? i bet its few and far between.
in 10000 days there are 2 powerful verses:
1) i only pray heaven knows when to lift you out, 10000 days in the fire is long enough, your going home. your the only one who can hold your head up high, shake your fist at the gates saying, "I HAVE COME HOME NOW!" fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father, tell them their pillar of faith has ascended, its time now, MY TIME NOW. GIVE ME MY, GIVE ME MY WINGS!
despite his convictions, and his disbelief in her god, hes telling us that if anyone deserved wings, its her. and speaking of his convictions, after his mother ascends, he reconciles his feelings with her, in the second powerful movement
2) set as i am in my ways and my arrogance, burden of proof tossed upon non-believers. you were my witness, my eyes, my evidence, Judith Marie, unconditional one!!
those parts send chills down my spine and give me goosebumps. its almost erie.
seriously, you would be hard pressed to find a more profound memorial. im open to suggestions, but you had better make them good, because Wings for Marie, and 10000 days, IMHO, could be the best ever.

i laughed alot at the time i first heard those lyrics. cuz it was a day after i said 'so what have i done to be worthy to be graced by an angel?" to my girlfreind of the time who i was trying to hold onto. i swear i diddnt mean to say it, it came out accidental, most corney thing i ever said. i swear im usually much more poetic without the gag factor.
not suprisingly it diddnt work, and im not suprised she left. so they arent that powerful.
but yeh, its nice, but i think you may be going a bit far to say its the greatest memorial ever constructed. im quite sure theres a few epic artists throughout history who may take a little offense

they can take all the offense they want. as a student of the arts, ive seen a lot of works of art and architecture. there is no single piece in any museum that moves me the way this song does.

This is a song I've yet to grow tired of, after listening to it about 200+ times (50 recorded on last.fm, many in the car, many on the ipod, and more...). It's just beautiful in every way.

this is amazing. I have to agree that this is the greatest memorial ever. It is just beautiful how much Maynard loves his mother and obviously her death and the events leading up to it was a heavy blow. I also love how he mentioned God even though he has issues with religon, it shows his respect for her.

perhaps not in the same direction, but this song has moved me as well more so than any other song, image, etc.
the continuous progression of the spirit up and out of the dreary bleak reality of assholes who don't understand your personal interest in whatever matter, be it of mourning or not.
and plus: "Should you see your Maker's face tonight,/ Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:/ 'I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.'"

10K came out one year after my mother passed away. So wings & 10k will always have a certain personal value to me.

I don't think this has anything to do with him accepting god and religion. My thoughts in this song: Faith and belive isn't about religion, but about your life and the people in it. Religion and god in this song is for many people what his mother were for him. If you can understand me :)

When I saw tool after this album came out I hoped they would play this song, and they did. It was one of the most Awe-some (full of awe) experiences I've had in my life. By the time 10,000 was nearing its climax, I felt such a strong out of body experience... yet such a personal connection which each of the members. It was pure, and it was unforgettable. And i realized the true power of music.

I don't know if I would call this "the best memorial ever constructed"- The Taj is pretty freaking impressive :), but this album is special. It's beautiful, powerfully honest with a juxtaposing humility that runs throughout the whole album. I read MJK's post and I was really got to me- so much so, that I had to join up to share my thoughts.
Firstly, MJK if you read this, or your people read this, I know this is incredibly late- I am so sorry for your lost, but thankful that you were born with an amazing gift to express what so many can't. I know firsthand the healing power of this album. My friend just lost her 32yr sister, and while we driving back from the hospital I put this on and we started talking about it, life, death, god and faith. I think you helped her a lot.
This song though does so much more than just help those who are confronted with the lost of a loved one. It forces people to analyze their faith, and why they believe. Personally I have been from religion to another- everything from Catholicism, Hinduism, Mormonism, Buddhist, and Baptist and now I just call myself a Christian- Other. I've learned much of what this song talks about. Faith isn't something that comes from congregations or lip service prayers but it is something from within; sometimes without cause or wavering.
Lastly, there is nothing wrong with being a cynic. Cynic were once those who believed virtue to a path of only good and self-control, and that this "good" was the only way to achieving virtue. Unfortunately our un-virtuous society changed the meaning. However, I still look at a cynic as a person who knows the way things should be, and is disappointed by the outcome, if anything its quite loving.
This album, especially this song, along with the hope of current administration and my incredible bf, has convinced me to leave my shallow and empty job, and go back to school; Neuropsychology with a minor in criminology. I hope to someday work in a juvenile detention centers and help introduce real reform. So yeah, perhaps I was wrong, perhaps this is really one of the all time great memorials because it inspires so much.
