Why would it take another whole year? And if so, why would they already have a potential release date so far in the future?
If the date is about right, that's 6 years coming. Longer than the last one. :(

Over a year ago already was when Blair said they had started writing in earnest.

Well they're not hitting the studio anytime before August due to the APC tour.

Given that 10k Days was recorded in August 05 and released in April the following year, May would be a reasonable assumption for a release date, regardless of how accurate Blair's prediction may or may not be.

The world may not end per se, only the world as we know it:

"I suggest that we have entirely misunderstood the character of time. We are not being pushed by the force of causal necessity; we human beings, like the rest of nature, are reacting to the siren song of the transcendental object at the end of time. We are on a collision course with an event for which there is barely language. We are on a collision course with a temporal vortex of some sort."

Tool's next album is, perhaps, the Trancendental Object at the End of Time. Terrence McKenna predicted it.

Starting a master's in the fall. My old lab project was based in alternative metal oxide substrates for a new generation of MOSFETs. Basically trying to work out the kinks in materials other than silicon (my lab was trying to work with tantalum) to scale down the size of current semi-conductors. I had more of an engineering role, but it was good. I want to keep doing condensed matter or soft condensed matter as I go on. Maybe throw in some bio applications so I can actually make some money.

I'm probably alone on this but I actually want to see Tool go the more experimental route versus turning back to AEnima and Lateralus for inspiration. I feel like they've gotten that message across for that era of music and it landed at such a crucial time for society (both albums). We all know Maynard can't do screams like he used to, so trying to write music with such passion and anger wouldn't sound nearly as good. I actually like 10K Days as I feel it's Tool's most accessible album, if anything for not being as long winded or heavy as their previous albums, this ones definitely more focused on other things and if their next album can sound as good as 10K Days then I am not gonna complain in the slightest.

I tend to agree with you sir.

This can be understood in a different way, however, when you consider the band's music as a cathartic device, so to speak. I was very struck by MJK's comments in which he described the live performance of some of the band's material as "opening old wounds" (yes, I'm paraphrasing). These comments were delivered during the period in which the band was beginning to play "Wings/10kd" live for the first time. And it seemed to me that MJK was regretful of the fact that he had to perform this particular piece of music night after night. Generally speaking, he seemed regretful that he had even addressed personal issues in his lyrics at all.

So I wonder what his approach will be to this next record. I tend to view 10kd as a schitzophrenic album of sorts. There was a great deal of drug humor silliness(The Pot, Lost Keys, Rosetta Stones) mixed with a lot of uber-personal introspection (Wings, 10kd, Right in Two). Despite it being a "fun album" in my opinion, these two concepts never really coalesced for me. I mean, lets be real, what is the connection between drug humor and the death of MJKs mother? This question haunts me whenever I listen to the record.

So for the next album I hope MJK only gets serious about things he won't regret later, if you know what I mean. IMO, MJK is the only unpredictable member of the band at this point. With Danny, Justin and Adam, you know what you are going to get. For MJK though, it seems likely to me that the "sophmoric silliness" that is the Puscifer project, is a reaction to the more solemn aesthetic that is Tool. This could indicate that when MJK puts his "Tool hat" back on, he will be less inclined to write humorous, Rosetta Stoned-style lyrics. Maybe, maybe not. Who really knows right?

I want to hear Danny break out the Chapman Stick.

Lets hear what that man can do with strings.

I accomplished this by loading all of the possible segmentation levels into a table in oracle which our statistical package then interpreted (replacing variables with nulls, thus making segmentation by said variables irrelevant).

To construct the table, I first created a row where all were marked as "Y." The only ones I toggle are in the middle (switch from white to green). I then copied that one row and swapped the first cell that I want toggled (making it white). I then copied both of those rows, pasted them back, and swapped the second column for that new block (switching it to white). I repeated this process for each variable I wanted swapped, doubling the size of the table each time. The result is a cool fractal-ish ("ish" might not be necessary if this is actually considered a fractal) table that includes every possible combination of my variables in a format that I can use and with very little work required on my part.

Here is a pic:

For fun, I also tried it with three possible states for each variable (1,2,3 rather than Y/N) and used conditional formatting to assign colors based on the color of each cell (same thing that I did here, but with an additional color). It also looked pretty sweet.

We all know Maynard can't do screams like he used to, so trying to write music with such passion and anger wouldn't sound nearly as good. I actually like 10K Days as I feel it's Tool's most accessible album, if anything for not being as long winded or heavy as their previous albums, this ones definitely more focused on other things and if their next album can sound as good as 10K Days then I am not gonna complain in the slightest.
agreed.

i can see them going down the jambi/intension road. songs along those lines.

Seems like a lot of work that a VAR two line command could have done in 20 seconds.

Given that I have no idea what a var command is, whether it is even applicable to the programs I am using, and that the magic of the copy and paste key allowed me to create my table in less than thirty seconds, I think the way that I did it was fine.
