Again, not hearing the short "i" sound at all and with an open mind I just went back again and listened to it using various methods (EQ, slowing it down, etc) and the live versions because I thought it was feasible that he might be saying "hippies" with the word sounding like "hipppaayze" but honestly I hear no reference to Hippies, or hippy haze...
You can clearly hear two distinct words here "happy" and "haze". Happy with the short "a" sound and "haze" with the long "a" sound.
I know you may like to think it says "hippy" as that may sound better to your ears or what you think song lyrics should say, but honestly, I can't hear the "i" sound at all.
Overall, this is just another debate that won't be settled no matter how convincing everyone here is trying to be until the man himself graces us with the official lyrics on toolband.com.
And even then, who knows if he actually posts exactly what he sings. He might change them a bit just to fuck with us or to get us to continue to debate even further.

Also, if you listen to the part that's widely regarded as "lalalalalalalala-lie" especially in the live versions and given maynards lyrical style and sense of sarcasm in his writing, I'm hearing "lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie..." x4 which is sarcastic in the sense he's singing it like a lullabye as if being representitive of how our government and the media disguise things.
To me it also connects with his song from APC "The Pet" and to me, that flows well with the content of the song. Like we're all lying to ourselves telling ourselves everything is ok and living in our "happy haze" but if you watch the TV if you really open your eyes to the enormousness and level of everything going on in the world, it's quite daunting how much corruption, death and destruction takes place every second of every day.
But since it's not actually happening to us, we can sit back in the realtive security of our homes and watch it from afar and think to ourselves, "better you than I".

Simple.
Vicarious = living through other persons (or something like that).
The story teller is having fun on tragedys that happen in other lifes, but himself is staying alive in a safe place, on his couch, where he has his TV.

I seriously am beginning to think that Maynard says "I owe the TV."
It makes sense since the Tv provides him with the tragedy that thrills him so.

Well I'm 91% sure it's "Eye on", so there!
"Eye on the TV" gives the lyrics a more creative twist that Maynard is known for, not something as simple and bland as "I own the TV 'cause tragedy thrills me." Plus it makes more sense that you watch a TV because tragedy thrills you, not that you own it because it thrills you (I mean both make sense, but technically you would associate watching instead of owning).

- The technical aspect. What sounds better?
Eye on the TV 'cause tragedy thrills me.
I own the TV 'cause tragedy thrills me.
I know, that doesn't mean "eye on" CAN'T be, but the "me" always bothers me. If there is a possibility with "I", I think THAT is the right one.
- It's too simple for you? Maynard sings the word "the" too! It's used in every love song!
- And last but not least, I *hear* own.

I think it's one of those things where we'll have to wait for the official lyrics. I tend to hear things others don't, anyway, like in Jambi at the end I still (very clearly) hear "say your praise" and not "save your poison". So oh well.

I can't believe you guys are still fighting the fact that it is "Eye on the TV" and nothing else. Remember the first time you searched for Vicarious lyrics? What was the first guess? Exactly. Usually the first one is the correct. trust me on this one.

<< stare at the transmittal, sing to the death rattle >>
Just an idea, but how about for the above line:
Stare at the ...
Transmit 'till ...
Sing to the ...
... death rattle.
i.e. 3 phrases that could each share the "death rattle" ending? It makes more sense to me as "transmittal"=the act of transmitting, and isn't really something you can stare at. But I'm probably stupid wrong...

And my first guess was "I have a penis", so I guess nothing else is possible. Have you actually thought about what you just said iota? Think about *how* this first guess has come to be. With the magical power of Firstguessingness? No, because there are people that are stupid enough to think that it's "eye on the TV". This would sound very idiotic if it would be "eye on the TV" BUT IT IS NOT! IT IS "I OWN THE TV".

That has got nothing to do with what I said. Fact is, "eye on the TV" has NOT got to be right because of the magic of Firstguessingness.
And Success, don't tell me something about arrogance. I'm not *arrogant* in wanting to have the right opinion, I want to have the right lyrics.

Yes, we will see. But I have already resigned myself to the fact that some of my theories will inevitibly be wrong. And niether your desire for correct opinion nor for correct lyrics make you arrogant- its your style of abject recrimination. You ARE arrogant.

Yes, yes and I think everything I say is right, that's why I don't even say arguments, I just say "this is right, suck it". I'm such a bad person. If you would actually read my posts, you could see that what I write here is worth something for me.

The magic of Firstguessingness only applies to educated guesses, was my point. the penis thing, well, I thought you were serious. Since obviously (I hope) that wasn't an educated guess, Firstguessingness magic does not apply to it. I think we can all agree that even if you think "eye on the TV" is NOT correct, it still is an educated guess, nes pa?
And why are you 100% sure that "eye on the TV" would not be correct because of the magic of Firstguessingness? That's something I'd like to know... I think it does have a chance because of its educatedguessingness... ;)
And wtf is SPO ending all his/her posts with yay france??? *lol*

They both have a chance. I just have my reasons why "I own" is right and the other thing is wrong. The point of my post was, only because it was the first educated guess, it doesn't mean it is right, does it? Because even educated people can be wrong, when Maynard James Keenan writes the lyrics. ;P

^ totally. I didn't say it's correct because it's a first guess; I just implied that it has a better chance of being correct because of the magic of firstguessingness (and because it's what I think... *lol*) I've experienced the magic of Firstguessingness firsthand (love the cacophony, *lol*), and sometimes it's creepy!
But, yeah. Hell, yeah. Educated people can be wrong.
