You can clearly hear two distinct words here "happy" and "haze". Happy with the short "a" sound and "haze" with the long "a" sound.

I know you may like to think it says "hippy" as that may sound better to your ears or what you think song lyrics should say, but honestly, I can't hear the "i" sound at all.

Overall, this is just another debate that won't be settled no matter how convincing everyone here is trying to be until the man himself graces us with the official lyrics on toolband.com.

And even then, who knows if he actually posts exactly what he sings. He might change them a bit just to fuck with us or to get us to continue to debate even further.

Also, if you listen to the part that's widely regarded as "lalalalalalalala-lie" especially in the live versions and given maynards lyrical style and sense of sarcasm in his writing, I'm hearing "lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie..." x4 which is sarcastic in the sense he's singing it like a lullabye as if being representitive of how our government and the media disguise things.

To me it also connects with his song from APC "The Pet" and to me, that flows well with the content of the song. Like we're all lying to ourselves telling ourselves everything is ok and living in our "happy haze" but if you watch the TV if you really open your eyes to the enormousness and level of everything going on in the world, it's quite daunting how much corruption, death and destruction takes place every second of every day.

But since it's not actually happening to us, we can sit back in the realtive security of our homes and watch it from afar and think to ourselves, "better you than I".

Simple.

Vicarious = living through other persons (or something like that).

The story teller is having fun on tragedys that happen in other lifes, but himself is staying alive in a safe place, on his couch, where he has his TV.

I seriously am beginning to think that Maynard says "I owe the TV."

It makes sense since the Tv provides him with the tragedy that thrills him so.

"Eye on the TV" gives the lyrics a more creative twist that Maynard is known for, not something as simple and bland as "I own the TV 'cause tragedy thrills me." Plus it makes more sense that you watch a TV because tragedy thrills you, not that you own it because it thrills you (I mean both make sense, but technically you would associate watching instead of owning).
