Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

Set:

Stinkfist (alt. with long scream)
The Pot
46 & 2
Jambi
Schism (with sped up middle)
Rosetta Stoned (no lost keys)
Sober (feat. Serj Tankian)
Lateralus
Vicarious
Aenema

My very first festival experience, its like seeing Tool on there own, but with a bunch of shitty opening acts, crappy sound, a lot of waiting, and more expensive. That said, it was worth it, stock set n all.

I didn't get much of a view, I did initially but as soon as Tool started playing the area I was in got bombarded with faggy tall nuckleheads. But at least the sound wasn't too bad where I was, I thought the guitars where a little low, but not too bad.

Onto the set. It was pretty awesome, Tool seemed to be in good spirits and played almost flawlessly. Maynard didn't wuss out on any of the tough singing bits, I really like the big scream in Stinkfist, and the end of Vicarious. There's not a whole lot to say about the set that I reckon would be much different from any of the other recent sets except this. Just before Sober Maynard announced 'There might be a special guest on this song, I'm not sure, but its possible. You may have heard of this new, up and coming band, System of a Down' or words close to that.
Then during the usual guest spot in Sober Serj came out and wailed away with some nice echoy, distorted effects, doing some kidna easterny sounding cries, it was actually pretty awesome. He even threw a very hearty blood curdling scream in there to top it off, very nice. He returned later for the group hug at the end. I've seen him around Auckland a bit, apparently he's shopping for a home over here, he actually wanted to start up a studio I believe, but the NZ government refused on ground that they didn't want to take anything away from (the extremely crappy) local music, even though the studio was meant as much for New Zealand music as anywhere else.
So yeah, thats the highlights that I can think of so far. I really enjoyed Rosetta, even without Lost Keys. Vicarious impressed me, I've never been huge on that song but they nailed it live. Lateralus was good as always. Apart from being shorter than I'd have liked, there were pretty much no low points.

Oh yeah, he said they "hopefully" be back in November, and kept mentioning what a lovely day it was.

Thats all for now, as Maynard said, peace the fuck out.

Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

My 6th Tool show. Others being Auckland 2001, London 2002 (x2), Hawaii 2006 (x2). Setlist as described before, so no need........

Full lighting rig indeed. No white stage however, which was to be expected. Hilights were apart from the obvious guest appearance....Vicarious and Aenema. They were both nailed. There seemed to be some technical difficulties with the screens for the first couple, but they were soon sorted in time for the superb new visuals for Rosetta. I guess it was a little short, but youve got to expect that at a Festival. I am off to Melbourne next Wednesday to see them there aswell, so I am expecting better everything, sound, crowd, performance, seeing as it is there own gig.

Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

I was right up front, had been there since Jet played (for those who dont know it went Jet, then Scribe who sucked so badly we almost wanted to leave the mosh, then The Killers on the Stage we were in front of, the Muse on the other where scribe was before, then Tool where we were. So we were right up there.)

When your that close the music sounds so much better, its amazing. I normally think BDO sound sucks, but when ur that close it is really good. The crowd was ok. Its good to see some nerdy ppl like me there. Tool pulls alot of Black dressed wanna be "I hate my dad so I like Tool" people. Thats cool, but that really not what they are. So i was happy to see some "other" normal people like myself.

Tool came on, Maynard wearing this Fluro Orange jacket that made him stand out like a sore thumb, Mohawk laden. Adam always really cracks me up. I mean, im a guitarist and I totally spaz out when playing a Tool song with my friends. But Adam just stands there blankly most the time doesnt even really look at his frets. But thats just him, I dont disagree with anything he does, hes one of my guitar heroes for his simplicity of his riffs but complex nature of his sound.
In big contrast, Justin looks like a kush ball on a washing machine, his hair flapping around like crazy, he really gets into it. Is that because he was drinking Stella's onstage? Still, he is an amazing man.
Danny always looks like he is enjoying his work on drums. He looks like he is on a spiritual journey everytime he plays the songs. Like on Lateralus, he looked amazing, just zoned out and focused on the playing. In essence, he is the one who most people who are tool fans focus on since he is an amazing performer.
Which brings me back to maynard. What I like about him is his passion in his voice and performance. He just moves around like a person who is having problems with his back and legs but he looks awesome! Its kinda scary if you watch the old Tool performances cause he really looks similar there. He just doesnt look as weird now, prob cause hes grown up. I have never thought he looks weird, im just commenting on my friends say. They dont understand tool. One of my friends who was at the show but not with me Txt'd me and said he left cause they were boring and that Linkin Park walks all over them. Please remind me to smash this guy for such an insult. Maynard was in top form, great vocals, amazing passion, weird dancing and I love just watching him get right into the music when hes not singing. Sometimes it looks like he riding a bull and on the odd occasion he looks like hes giving a N00b some Spanks. Its funny and awesome at the same time! Go hard Maynard, you rock my world.
Rarely do you see a band turn up onstage with their own clothes feeling comfortable and casual and who also put their life into these songs. Maynard for me isn't the great member of the band simply because the MUSIC is the greatest member of the band. All four members make this amazing sound that touches my soul. I had a headache for half the day. I didnt do any drugs this BDO including no BZP pills, no alcohol, nothing. And i had this shitty head ache that everytime I couldn't handle not singing to some of my favourite parts and just started singing my lungs out, this head ache would throb!! So that kinda sucked for me.

The set list was fantastic, save for not playing Opiate or anything of Opiate for that matter. They pulled off Rosetta Stoned almost flawlessly except at the end, they messed up with the last "God damn shit the bed." I dont know if the crowd noticed, but I noticed that the band figured they had fucked up. All good though, I didnt care. It was made up for by Serj coming out and singing some improv stuff in the middle of Sober. This was just amazing. He started off kinda softly, adding little dynamics here and there, then in true Tool style as the band started to get heavier with this part, he started screaming a scream that was just amazing and it fully gave me the wobblies, like I felt I had had a spirtual experience. People prob saw me just going crazy and waving my self around (head ache hurting of course) and they prob thought I was weird. But they musn't understand what its like to have your charkra's touched by the greatest band in the world. *sigh* they will one day.

They finished with Aenima which I knew they would, having seen previous setlists. This was incredible. I have seen Tool twice before, but they were spot on with their sound including Aneima. Adams solo was amazing on guitar, a solo I love to play my self, but he always does it better.

After they finished people started chanting for more, but any BDO punter knows there is no Encore for any band at the BDO. For those who didnt know, Shapeshifter, the NZ D&B group had to be turned off cause they wouldnt stop, so there really is no encore for no one.

However, tool said they will prob be back in Sept, Nov or Dec. And I cant wait!! I waited 4 years since I saw them last time. Dont make me wait that long again please Tool!!!

For those who were there, I hope you enjoyed it as much as me.
I will always remember it.
Peace out
XPandnz

Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

Yeah I noticed the fuck up aswell at the end of Rosetta. MJK also messed up the 2nd verse of Stinkfist. He simply sang the wrong lyrics. All part of it though. I guess they are only human. It is still unfathomable how they can re-produce such intricate music live anyway. Did anyone else get completely fucked-off with the stupid fucking super-loop, that kept going during the performance? Completely rude, especially in the calmer break-down sections of the songs. I think Mr Campbell Smith (organiser of BDO) should really think about stopping the Amusement rides while a band like Tool is performing. Disappointing. Roll on the Myer Music Bowl on the 31st!

yeah when My Chemical Romance played I heard that shitty super loops so we moved up closer, like I said, you really needed to be up front to really enjoy the true sound. Good luck for the Music Bowl next week! Lucky bugger!

Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

If anyone would like to view footage of the Tool gig at Big Day Auckland, I have uploaded some videos onto youtube. Follow the link below..

Some of the videos are dodgy quality because ther were 45,000 other excited sweaty Tool fans all wanting to get the best view and sing the loudest :P

Enjoy!!

p.s. I met Adam and Justin the night before, they were staying at the Metropolis in Auckland- to the guys who paid $500/night to get a room at the hotel on the chance they would meet Tool- any luck? about 10mins after you guys went up to your room Adam and Justin showed up! Was only me and my girlfriend, not another Tool fan in sight- amazing! Guys were friendly and happy to sign an autograph and chat about the Big Day Out Festival they were to headline the next day.

Anyway, enough from me, go watch the vids!

Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

Kind of off-topic; could someone please post details about the Tool merch on sale at the Auckland Big Day Out? I'd like to know how much cash to bring if I want to get a shirt and what kind of shirts they're selling.

Thanks! :)

Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

Aligatorlizard - you f@#ing little beauty - thx for the vids' link - TOOL played the best set I could have expected at such a thing as BDO, if they'd played Prisonsex or Parabola would have been near perfect for me. Have seen them 6 times now, but this was the first since the Lateralus Tour. Awesome sound - I stood on a little platform right in front of the lightstage from the start of Evermore to see TOOL - must have been just about the best position in the whole fuc@ing stadium, only downside being having to put up with security continually waving directions at people, the people leaving the mosh, and the wait - being almost made unbearable by the torture of Scribe, did I mention how bad it was having to listen to Scribe? Couldn't hear the superloop where I was, understand how it could be annoying, shouldn't have been where it was/or shut down, any cunt that wants to go for an loop-de-loop ride during a TOOL gig has a definitely f@cked up sense of priorities. But then again, anyone that expects any remote semblant sense of personal space remaining whilst they're viewing TOOL should not really attend. See you at the Myers' - I'm gonna hit the Tour track once again!

Yeah, he said something about wanting to finish quick because he was missing out on hotel porn. But he did say that they'd be back Nov/Dec.

I almost burst it was so awesome - I've never seen them play live before either. Effectively I paid $500 just to see Tool (including airfare from down south), but it was worth it. Unfortunately I was quite far away though, so the noise wasn't the best, and it was hard to hear Maynard sometimes. Other than a couple of drunken tall guys kept lifting up and waving their beer cloaks and completely blocking the view, the crowd was good. And the guest performance was awesome.

Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

Man, I have been busy. Yeah Tool were amazing. I had pretty reasonable sound from where I was - just outside the fenced off "D" mosh pit, not to far from the sound desk. Tool's sound was pretty good considering it was an outdoor festival. Their sound was better than most bands that took the main stage, although Muse also had excellent sound. Incidently, while Muse were playing they were setting up the other stage for Tool and the crowd cheered Danny's enormous drumkit as it was wheeled out.

Mostly flawless playing, the collapsed end of Rosetta Stoned made me laugh though. Also noticed Justin got out of time a little in a part of Lateralus. That said, the amount of complex shit that they nailed is phenomal. Danny is, as always, a monster. Maynard sounded great. Justin's sound suffered a little due to the open air environment, but his playing was superb. Adam stood stock still except for one little bounce I noticed and he appeared to play everything perfectly. Thank you Serj - that was very cool. Dude, buy a house in Welly's - forget about Auckland.

The circular lighting rig was left alone until the beginning of Lateralus then when the song really kicked in, the lasers blasted from both sides of the stage - I was blown away. I had the perfect view of everything standing on the fence just before the walkway between the D and the rest of the stadium. I sat through Scribe and The Killers to keep that spot. Man, Scribe has gotten chubby! Yeah "Peace and love!(and fried food)"

There was a little improv with Maynard on keys before Lateralus (I think). A couple of other spots had some scratching around before the song proper began, but I forget where.

Anyway, I gotta get going. I am really busy at the moment. We start recording on Wednesday. Thanks for the inspiration Tool.

Take care,

Dan

If you are interested I will be posting a vid of rosetta stoned on youtube in which you can hear the stuff up (kinda funny but It's nice to see that they are, in fact human). Also will be posting Lateralus full song. Just cutting them down to fit on youtube.

Nice review!!

Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

Wow. What an experience.

Had to wait about 90mins outside the D entrance just to get entry. Me and my mate were told by the securitythat they weren't going to let anyone in for the rest of the night, and this was before The Killers had started. We had faith though and thanks to the person who started the massive surge that rolled about 20 cops out of the entrance way, we were able to gain a great position at the entrance and then be let in just after Muse began their set. What a feeling.

Made it about 15m from the front just before Stinkfist began and then as it was played I lost my mate and managed to get centre stage, just three people between me and the stage barrier. What a position!

I have newfound respect for Jambi, it was played amazing live. The riffs are just crazy and Adam's talkbox solo is spine-tingling.

Schism's sped-up middle is insane and it was great to see Adam rock over to Justin's area for this part.

Serj's chilling cameo during Sober put some very tasty icing on what is truly a classic dark and heavy Tool song.

Lateralus - what can I say?! By far my favourite song live, it really does take you on a spiralling journey. The visuals too during this song were incredible, especially the laser grid above Adam.

Aenema was a fantastic closer and the "I'm praying for rain.." bit contains vocals to make one melt.

Enjoyed Maynard coming out in his fluro-orange sweatshirt, very unexpected.

Danny was Danny(what more can you say?) and Justin played some unbelievable bass lines, especially during The Pot and 46 & 2.

The pit did at times put a downer on the performance because due to some meatheads concentration was often lost. My fault for being there though, had to experience it before enjoying gold seats in Sydney on Wednesday!

The sound very much improved (after the delay) from what was pretty poor throughout the most of the day.

Great experience, I hope Maynard was for once speaking the truth about coming back in November/December so we can get a real show in NZ!

Can't wait for Sydney.

Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

WHAT A NIGHT!!! It was all i was hoping for and more. Tool showed why they were the headliners and why a shitty emo band like my chemical romance was placed so early. They just totally dominated the whole BDO. The stadium was FULL watching and over half would have no real knowledge of tool as they are never played on the radio over here but EVERY single person stood up in awe. I had to wait for 4 hours to be able to be at the front but it was worth it. a lot of others had the same idea but people where fainting all over the place it was that hot!

The special guest Serj was a great pressy to us NZ fans that bearly get to see them, my guess is that serj was already over here because when they came here for the big day out he said he was looking for property in NZ. Very funny to hear Maynard as serj to finish the set for him to let him go back to the hotel porn. He was actually very chatty, i was expecting him to not say that much. He even seemed impressed with the crowed as he let rip a "Holy Fuck" when he go on stage.

Other highlights of the day had to be Blindspott, they really did go off quite hard. Old fav of mine and still like seeing them even though its like the 7th time. Also muse, however I wasnt able to ge a great view of them as i was waiting for Tool.

First Tool show I've ever seen... Fuck yeah!
I'd obviously much prefer an indoor venue with decent sound... Wouldnt we all. I don't recall the sound beind as bad at the 06 big day out... But fuck this years was shit. It was only good in Muse and Tool, but even then it sounded like it could have been better. I thought the sound on the green stage sounded better.
Muse and Tool made my day. Fucking awesome show.

Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

Hey all,

This was my 2nd tool show after seeing them in Christchurch in 2002. Very much a different setting this time, being at a festival and all. I was centre stage, about 10 metres from the front.

Quite a young crowd, compared to the Chch concert which had people of all ages.

Anticipation was awesome. Didn't see any of muse as I was too close. No big loss though. Just talking to other guys about tool, as none of my mates are really into them.

Took a while for them to come out. All the other bands had kept to a tight schedule but as Tool were last I guess they could please themselves.

As they came out everyone went nuts and Adam held his guitar up to the crowd.

There seemed to be something wrong with Danny's Kit for the first few songs. The drum technician was kneeling beside the kit fiddling with something as the guys were playing but I don't remember seeing him later.

Had followed the other set-lists so knew what songs they were going to play.

After all the bouncing around of the first few songs I made my way to about 3 people from the barrier so I was stoked.

Found the singing on Rosetta Stoned with the effects mic hard to hear. Anyone else find that?

Can't really add much else, has been well covered by previous posts.

Thanks heaps Tool. A great time. See you in November/December.

Cheers

Re: 2007/01/19 - Auckland, NZ - MT Smart Stadium

I'll keep this short, as anyone who has seen the band perform knows that the majority of the incredible experience that it is a Tool show just can't be put into words: The show was amazing as usual - it was a great surprise to have Serj's cameo in Sober - the setlist was great, the band was amazing in their musicianship / execution, and I'm looking forward to when the band comes back late this year and plays some stand-alone shows at indoor venues throughout the country. I'm putting aside about a grand to make sure I can get to all three shows, hoping they play Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

My sincere thanks to Tool for creating such mind-blowing, moving music and allowing us to be a part of an incredible, unique experience. Sincere words of gratitude are owed to those who endeavoured to create and sustain a good vibe for both the band and the crowd. Flying kicks to the head are owed to those who thrashed their limbs around with no concern for others, started circle pits and injured unwilling bystanders, and made a point of targetting small people and girls in the pit in order to move closer to the stage.

Thanks.

Yeah i know what your saying. I couldnt hear him at all during this song! Im glad I knew the song or else it would have just been a really long band solo. Pitty really, as i wanted to hear what it sounded like for him to sing that song because its so different.
