When I started playing Tool riffs on the bass I realized that most of their songs (radio hits anyway) are the same 4 or 5 notes offset with an open D. It’s real easy to roll into the wrong song. At first First I was a little let down by this, but I think I read somewhere that Danny’s set is tuned to the key of D or something like that?

These 2 songs have definitely added to my hunger rather than satisfy my lust for new material. I can’t wait to listen to the album beginning to end with headphones... vinyl would be a bonus.

Yes, both songs make me look forward to August 30th even more. I was just getting "riff deja vu" I suppose. I'll know a lot more after tonight.

Sweat, Intolerance and now Part of Me. Seeing a show with all of these played would be amazing but just not possible in the current Tool world.
I love that they are going deep in the catalogue and bringing back some old tracks but it is too bad that they can only play one at each show.
Maybe I'm just old.

Personally I'd rather hear deep cuts from Aenima and Lateralus that aren't Stinkfist, 46&2 and Schism, than delving into Opiate and Undertow
That said the renditions round great, so wouldn't lose much sleep over it.

Not that I've seen. Merch is the usual assortment of shirts - tour shirt based on the poster. Tool socks though...

With the new songs being so long, I doubt DRT will be broken out. I'm fine with Intolerance being the "deep cut" I've probably heard it fewer times than Part of Me.

Whoa! 'Checks bank account'... yea I could probably swing that. Amazing doodle by Adam there in bottom right corner. And I am guessing doodle in upper left is MJK's.

I have a "re-marked" poster with an Adam scribble on it from the tour with Tweek Bird and I believe it was $150. I guess I better check the current value of it...

I doubt the value of your poster (or the new one) is anywhere near $1000.

I’ve been looking for the red rocks poster from the first night of 2010 forever. Only one I’ve ever found they want $500 for and it’s not even signed, some people are damn proud of them. Also need the 2010 Okc poster if anybody has seen a reasonable priced one that’s not the overpriced one that’s been on eBay for years in the frame with drum skins and all the other shit.

There's one for sale/trade on Expresso Beans right now. Not sure of the asking price. If you're not familiar with the site, you'll have to make a free account to view the listing.
Good luck!

I think this album is going to be a lot about Tool themselves. A reflective album on their career. I don't want to go into detail with my theory until I have the actual album but I just wanted to put it down so I can I told you so in the future. I think those "recycled" riffs are actually done on purpose.

Hm, consider this... let's say your assessment turns out to be correct. And I state for the record here and now that I agree with it. Does this mean I will be able to tell you I told you so?

That's an interesting thought. I suspect that would involve a level writing collaboration (between lyricist and musicians) that doesn't seem to exist within the band at this point. Unless you are speaking from an instrumental standpoint.
But I do like the concept and hope you are correct.

For fun I guess I'll go into a little more detail. I'll use Descending as the example. Descending has the very obvious grudge riff as well as the "let go let go riff" I think some how this album will be centered around a commentary on their catalogue as a whole. I think the past 5-6 years the songs the band has played (the grudge, pushit (riff is in invincible, rosetta stoned riff is also in invincible), no quarter, sweat etc) are songs they decided to "evaluate" with their new music. I think the new opiate came out of this idea and didn't work well with what they wanted to do so they turned it into a new interlude completely.
This next part is a little corny but hold on lol
Back to Descending. I think the title is kind of a play on words with the saturn "ascends" aspect of the grudge. I think that's why the song is called Descending as well as why the grudge riffs are used. I also think which I can't confirm until I really hear a studio but I think lateralus riffs are used in descending as well.
Of course to confirm this I need to hear the whole album but from what I've heard I think they might've planned this. Of course using old riffs and writing new music around them I can imagine takes some time. Maybe this is why the album has taken longer than expected.

As I understand it, 90% of the music is written without Maynard's input and 100% of the lyrics are written without the band's input. (Thus my comment about collaboration above.) The final Black Sabbath album was filled with call backs but I think that was more writers block and going back to the original formula and Rick Rubin's influence. I reccomend giving that spin. It will be interesting to see either way. Man, August seems so far away..

I think the communication between band members is greater than you think. He obviously was in several rehearsals from like 2010-2019. They obviously discussed the fibonacci sequence during lateralus and he decided to use in his lyrics. I wouldn't doubt the band letting him have a general idea if they were planning something like I said. Black Sabbath's album didnt take 13+ years to do lol. However I could definitely be wrong.

Well Black Sabbath went 35 years in between albums with Ozzy so they have Tool beat, lol, and I dont think the guys have the same writing methodology as they did when they were writing Lateralus.

Been giving the new songs a few more listens now that there are some decently polished bootlegs out there.
Descending is growing on me. Everything feels really solid rhythmically and melodically. Good riffage. Maynard has an appealing level of reserved intensity, however I still feel like his part is my only hang-up. He checks out after the halfway mark and I feel like there is a moment for at least one more vocal section toward the ending to help boost things to another level. Otherwise, I dig it.
I have a similar level of enthusiasm and approval of Invincible at this point, but a couple notches lower. Feels like it drags toward the end and sections play out longer than they need to without really building on much.
HB, any thoughts on when might see the first single and/or some cover art? End of Euro run?

I'm going to go ahead and say that Descending is better than anything off of 10,000 Days!
