Pure as we begin.
Here we have a stone.
Gather, place, erase so. (*)
Shelter turns to home.
The lyric is "Gather, place, and raise so"
It makes the most sense

The Aquabats did something similar 6 years ago:
"finish school, it's worth it to graduate" / "Your parents have the right idea" / "Brush your teeth"
great minds/bands :)

At this point I hear, "Jesus," and then what sounds something like, "Forgive...sins." Not really sure if he actually says it, if it is a hidden prayer without sound, or if I am hearing what I want to hear.
I do hear it every time though.
I hear it going forward every time at 1:05.
Haven't listened to it backward yet.
Perhaps I have an ability to decipher text, even when it is spoken backwards.
Opinions? Anyone else hear what I hear?

I turned it up as loud as I could, but i'm still not certain.

Maynard is throwing me for a loop here. Is he tight with Jesus as illustrated here or is he on the outs with Jesus illustrated in APC song Judith.

As I recall listening to this part for the first time, I was not expecting to hear anything. It just happened.
If it is really nothing, and if I've just created something through the use of dynamic ambiguity, my apologies.

Etc. That thread talks about the BACKWARDS lyric and has multiple links to places where the backwards lyric is hosted.
Plus, I've got the backwards lyric in this folder: http://www.esnips.com/web/xPOGOxsOtherStuff
That said, I'm going to try and see if I can pick out anything in the fowards version (the forward supposed hidden prayer you're talking about is at the same section as the backward lyric), but I imagine you're just hearing weird backwards stuff of the backwards lyric, like when people kinda sorta hear somewhat similarities of words in backwards playings of tracks and claim it's the devil, etc.

The forward version:
I hear "Jesus" in there too...but, with the program I am using, I can quickly click "reverse" and go right back over that in the other direction, and as I suspected, it's just a weird reverse listening to the other lyric.
When listening to it forward, you hear "Jesus" (or something similar) when you would hear "...is right" from the backward lyric. Also playing in the backward lyric behind the "Your father is right" is an increasing sort of whispered scream like "yaaaaaah" which might be part of the forward "Jesus" sound.
Conclusion:
No matter what I do in the capabilities I have with the program I am using, I can't get any sort of forward message in all the whispering except for coincidentals caused by hearing the reverse lyric in reverse. Not much different when you coincidentally hear something that sounds like a word when playing a regular lyric in reverse.
EDIT: When I'm doing this sort of stuff, please remind me to turn my volume way back down before I unpause Vicarious in the middle of a really loud part. Fuck that hurt my ears.

It is kind of interesting that when Tool makes a joke and hides a positive, very non-Satanic message in reverse in the song, you end up hearing "Jesus" when the song is played forward (and you hear the "hidden" lyric in reverse)...

In one of the gospels, Jesus says
"God hid the secrets of the world from the wise, and revealed them to babes and infants."
I think he means that, those that are reborn in the spirit, become like infants or babes in regard to innocence and good nature, when they repent.
Also, I've noticed that children sometimes really do know everything.
Perhaps this verse was manifested into this song, because Maynard, or other band members have repented (in whatever form, religion, spirit, belief, or idea they deem right).

I don't know if that rings quite true in my book, because it seems as though Maynard is still damanding more from both humanity and the spiritual realm. And i really don't think that we would be making demands like that if he had "found god" as the rumors are going! But that's just what I think

This is great, it is I believe a sarcastic slang at the dogma's of modern society. The rest of the song is about how we came to this terrible stale state, from our pure natural beginning.

By the way, those songs on that Zeitgeist space are from Super Metroid (Kraid) and the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Turned Into A Rabbit), two era-defining Super Nintendo classics!

still hilarious to me. in fact, if anyone DOESN'T find this hilarious (or even one further, if you take it SERIOUSLY), kill yourself.

Someone please help me to get to this myspace profile(or whatever its reerred to). I click on the link, it takes me to the zetigetist profile thingy. Where do I go from there? I tried the other posted method of listening to it but it wouldn't play for me. Please don't make me get my guitar processor out, buy 6 AA batteries, and remember how to do samples off my stereo again. I could do that, but I would like to forego that tedious work...
THANKS PEOPLE

i can see how it might be "raise".. i was hearing "gather place arrange," but "and raise" makes just as much sense.. and either one makes more sense than "a razor" or "erase."

No, I don't hear it, just the jibberish whispers (which make sense backwards).

I hear that, too...
When I try to make sense of this song, I get something of a history of humankind, with a Christian spin on it. We came in pure, as in the garden of Eden, got kicked out, were nomads -- hunter-gatherers, with no real possessions. Humans used rock formations, caves, for shelter, and then learned to gather stones and use them to build (as opposed to naturally occurring) shelters, which turned into homes, possessions, something to be defended. Now because there is home, other people are considered "the other" and therefore intruders on the homeland. The stone becomes a weapon to protect the home and family, or settlement, and crushes bone. Humans settled in protective groups learn to use fire to forge blades for hunting, and for defense (stay the stranger). Defense turns to offense (slay the stranger, take whatever we desire...) And yet, in the end, pure as light return to home. We're washed clean of our sins and we toddle off to heaven. Back to the fire, it provides warmth and utility, and also the forging qualities for tools and weapons, but it also I think symbolizes something else. Spark>flame>fire. Progression of anger/aggression? Divine vs. infernal? I'm not sure.
This song wasn't one of my favorites when I first heard it, but the more I think about it, this meaning I'm drawing from it operates on many levels (it represents human history, but also birth (pure as we come in) >death (pure as light return to home), and also perhaps U.S. history, etc.) Many levels? Oh yeah, that's Tool all the way through.
I also like the play on words of intention and in-tension. Our intent (whether we use something for protection or attack) creates tension? The push and pull between "us" and "them"? "I" and "other." Intent plays into the "free will" and "reason" aspects of "Right in Two" and tension plays into the "tug-of-war" aspects of "Right in Two", making this the perfect lead in to that song.
Okay. Sorry. I got carried away. And I realize this is the lyric thread, and probably not the place for me to think out my interpretation of the song. But, hey, my first line was about the lyrics.... :)
