They opened with The Grudge, which was the best opener I have seen (I am only a 5 timer, and still trying to get my Country-loving wife to the "experience").
If I recall correctly, I was at Colo. Spgs. City Auditorium for Snoopy Dogg 3 days later. It was very smoky and there may have been more people on stage than the audience. A very odd week, to say the least.

Firstly, I realize that it would be quite a tumultuous move, which is precisely why I was mostly kidding when I said that it was 'theoretically' possible for him to have missed it. Just because you saw him drop it the one time, doesn't necessarily mean that every other time he hasn't bashed it over the past four years, that he simply was unable to make it happen. Ostensibly he simply doesn't bother now and again. All of this, after all, is conjecture, don't'cha think? As if we could possibly know - except for the time you actually were able to witness him drop the mallet/beater. "Think about what you're saying". Touché.
Remember that he also hits it again at the very end/wind-down of the song; at the end of the ritard when they play the final D. Or at least he generally does nowadays. If memory serves me correctly, he also didn't play it on that night. I'll have to listen to my recording of that show when I'm home....
And finally, I am well aware of when the gong hit occurs. If you would have read my post more carefully, you would have seen that I clearly wrote "*AFTER* the "whatever will bewilder me" line.
