My brother happens to be in Vegas this weekend, and didn't realize that the Primus show was a midnight show. So yeah, now he's flying down and going to Rush and Primus, plus doing a few hours of work so it's all basically free. What a bum!

I really don't see those groupings as belonging together...especially after hearing the Holy Gift order...

d/r/t just seems like they go together because of the back cover line thingys

Schism -> T & L and Grudge -> Triad

then the whole 'I hope you choke' into mantra(sounds like someone choking to me now)

and THEN at the end...they 'bounce'.....it's awesome...and funny...just like our boys :)

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Surely someone here with some music software knowledge can create and upload a seemless "Holy Gift Mix" for the rest of us, uber geeks. I believe Audacity is a free download that has splicing capabilities.

So, if anyone can make me a good quality 'Holy Gift' remix with all the silence between tracks cut out, I'd glady repay you...

alternate/better track list:

6, 7, 5, 8, 4, 9, 13, 1, 12, 2, 11, 3, 10
I've been meaning to give the "holy gift" order a try for a while now, but breaking up DRT seems a bit too radical to me

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Not to sound like a condescending, pretentious dick (like Maynard), but...

Those of you who think that Lateralus' "holy gift" is a Fibonacci inspired reordering of the tracks are simply fools (hey, don't get me wrong, whatever floats your boat, but its a complete fabrication of someone who smoked a little too much dope).

The holy gift that Maynard was taking about is life. Listen to Parabola again, please.

There is no hidden order to the tracks; Maynard has said this many times and he is often very pained when having to explain this, as he is acutely aware that most of us completely missed the point.

The lyrics of Lateralus are about transcending our faults and strengthening our communication for the purpose of transcending our cyclical behavior; it is about self-reflection.

Do you now see why Maynard abhors his audience for the most part (besides the idiotic moshing)?

He is condescending to his audience for a reason; even though that makes him ignorant on many levels, it is, however, understandable.

How would you feel if you wrote some of the best mystical poetry of the last century and your "followers" completely missed the point and thought that there was a hidden message, instead of actually pouring over the lyrics themselves.

Maynard meant well, but what he was talking about was painfully idiosyncratic and esoteric.

Once again, this isn't to shit on anyone; I am just trying to clear a few things up.

If you like the modified track order; that's great, but please, PLEASE, don't go thinking that its the "holy gift" Maynard was talking about.

It is painful to see people still talking about this like its this AMAZING, "REAL" track order. The original track order is absolutely flawless and calculated. To think that there is a secret order to the tracks is absolutely batshit.

/end rant.

I think they're out of order because of the format. The album had to be broken up into four slices, and it was originally designed for the CD format, where it doesn't matter how long the tracks are.

the Lateralus vinyl is more of an art piece than a listener's album anyway, for better or worse...

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Not to get into a game of battleshits but Lateralus came out 9 years ago. If you think I haven't dissected that album inside and out maybe it's you that's assuming a bit much. All I said is that I'd be interested in giving the "Holy Gift" version a listen. Why? Because I've listened to the normal version a thousand times and well, why the hell not?

And while we're at it, Reflection > Lateralus.

Ah, of course, this makes sense. Agreed on the piece of art, just altogether amazing.

Has there been any talk about a possible 10000 Days vinyl release?

Lighten up Francis...no one here coined the term 'Holy Gift' for that reordering of the tracks...I think we all know full well what the lyrics mean.

I could give a fuck how Maynard wants me to listen to the album. I listened to Lateralus a hundred times before even hearing of the 'Holy Gift' theory but, once I heard the new order I liked it better...blasphemy?...so burn me at the stake...sheesh

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

It's good to read posts like yours 200L. I've never listened to the alternate track order but doubt Tool planned anything like it.. it's just a happy coincidence at best. I totally feel you when you say Maynard has written some of the best esoteric poetry of the last century. It's easy to see how it would irk him that the 'holy gift' calls to mind an alternate track listing to so many rather than life itself.

Anyway, my fellow tools, you really dropped the ball. I'm very surprised no one's mentioned the Coheed and Cambria + Porcupine Tree tour coming through the states right now. Luckily I happened to find out about it and got GA tickets baby!! My wife doesn't even know about it and we both wrote off ever seeing Porcupine Tree cause we doubted they'd ever come state-side. She's in for a big surprise. I'm driving her out to the event 2 hours away and saving it for the last moment, then I'm going to blindside her with the tickets. Usually not the type to stuff like this, but if I know my girl, she's going to be ecstatic.

Peace out, and see PT some time if at all possible.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

The track order of Lateralus is pretty much perfect.

10 000 Days on the other hand, has a ridiculously horrible track order in my opinion.

Edit: Just to clarify why - I think the transition between Vicarious and Jambi is very weak. They are both heavier songs and the abrupt start to Jambi does not flow well right after the outro of Vicarious.

However my biggest beef with the album is the INSANELY BAD transition of 10 000 Days to The Pot. Seriously!? "Hallelijuia, It's time for you to bring me home..." -----"WHO ARE YOU TO WAVE YOUR FINGER?.....".

Worst. Transition. Ever.

Worst. Transition. Ever.
Great post.

I too agree that the track order is a little lacking; the only problem being that I have listened to it so many times that I can't really imagine it being any other way.

That being said, this would be my alternate 10,000 Days track order:

Lost Keys
Rosetta Stoned
The Pot
Wings
10,000 Days
Intension
Right in Two
Jambi
Vicarious

I think Vicarious as a closer would be nice, but then again, I haven't listened to this yet.

I'm going to right now.

I can see where you are coming from with the 10,000 Days into The Pot transition; however, think of the theme.

The Pot is Maynard making fun of himself for previously "waving his finger" at religion.

10,000 Days is all about him admitting that he was ignorant in regards to his mother's faith; I mean, after all, look at how far he came from Opiate to Lateralus. After The Pot comes Rosetta, which is him basically admitting that his religious revelations were ultimately futile.

My biggest gripe with the album, really, is The Pot's name; why couldn't he come up with a better track title than that? Perhaps its meant to be silly, but it did irk me at first.

Cheers!

Update:

Upon listening to the track order I provided above, I'm not so sure I will ever listen to it any other way again.

Try it out; I really love the way it flows.

I see where you're coming from - but I don't think the meaning behind songs is nearly as important for the tracklisting/order. Flow of the audio/instruments is the most important factor here - and the vocal transition between the end of 10,000 days and the beginning of the pot is very difficult to listen to for me. Usually when playing the album I rush to hit pause on my iphone or computer before the intro for The Pot starts. Then again, maybe it's just because I never liked The Pot to begin with.

The Pot is from "The Pot calling the kettle black" and when matched with your analogy, makes perfect sense. It's also a play on another word for canabis.

F all of you. Right in Two is THE ending track. Better than Lateralus to end with methinks.

*Stirs the pot.*

Fixed otherwise interesting alternate track order.

No love for segue's?

Also I'd been trying this lately...

Vicarious
Jambi
Lipan Conjuring
The Pot
Lost Keys
Rosetta Stoned
Intension
Right in Two
Wings
Days
Viginti Tres

Haha, nice.

I hear what 200L's saying. If the band's intension was for Disposition/Reflection/Triad to be split up, then they probably wouldn't have performed them in succession as much as they did. I realise that earlier in the tour when they began performing Triad, that it would turn up on the other side of the intermission (or like at their show at the Brixton Academy, at the beginning). I think Tool do a great job of creating amazing albums that stand on their own. However, I believe it's their shows (like with any great band), where they really kick some creative ass. In other words, who gives a shit what order those songs are on that thing you bought at the store. That's not to say that one shouldn't necessarily spend time contemplating that package, I just think it's amusing that there are people out there dwelling on this whole, "what did Maynard REALLY mean?" thing. I see that the Wiki page for Lateralus no longer mentions the "prophecy" or "holy gift" tracklistings. It does say that the lyric "spiral out" is repeated throughout the song. Gotta love wikipedian half-truths. Aaaanyhow.

Speaking of Lateralus, I find it interesting that when they performed the song in Vancouver last month, Danny didn't use (bash the fuck out of) the gong during the peak part (after the "whatever will bewilder me"). I doubt that he forgot, though it is theoritically possible. I feel that he figured that because the song perhaps wasn't quite performed to a level of epicness that would warrant that explosive crash, that he just didn't bother.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

I have to say, when I saw Nickelback (I went because Seether was headlining) he did a pretty cool drum solo. Of course, being on a raised platform with a lazer show just for him might've helped sway my vote.
