I can't fathom how anyone can disagree. Intolerance, Prison Sex, Crawl Away, Undertow, 4 degrees, the last half of flood.
Even Disgustipated, as far as their walk-out tracks are concerned, is far more listenable than Viginti Tres or Lipan Conjuring.

I prefer 10kd to Undertow - though I agree with you that Viginti Tres and Lipan Conjuring are not particularly "listenable". Undertow hasn't aged as well as Aenima. Though, if I were a true gen-x'er I might think differently.

Undertow is far better than 10,000 days. It has some of Adams best riffs.

Here is what's weird. This forum was hoppin before the 10,000 Days came out. It seems like activity has slowed a little.
Is anyone a member of the Tool Army forum? I'm curious what the talk is of the new album there? I think it will be about the shift in consciousness as related to the Mayan calendar because the rumored release date is 12/21/2012.
I really wish the new site is up by then and you can just buy the DL online. I really dont feel like ordering the CD, undoing the package and plopping it into my computer just to import it into iTunes. I wish Adam would make all of the album artwork virtual.

The Toolarmy messageboard has been broken for over a year now, so there isn't much chatting of any type going on there.
There's really not much to talk about at the moment. The band are writing, and it appears the chances of them hitting the studio this year are getting more and more remote...

Towely already is. I've heard nothing of a rumored release date of 12/21/2012, outside of some fans saying, "Gosh wouldn't it be cool if...". Which doesn't make them valid; just speculation.

You're drawing conclusions about the album based off fan speculation. The definition doesn't matter when you used the word to add validity to your claim, "smart guy". Its a rumor because people are making it up. There is no support for that claim.

You proved my point. I, Towely McBoogerballs, did not make this up. Someone else made it up and I repeated the "rumor" I heard. Please retract your original statement.

It's useless to talk about musicians in terms of bad and good. No Adam Jones=No Tool.

What've you got against all that? Wtf do you mean by repeated riffs? You want a tool album that's just a succession of totally different riffs with no theme, style or consistency?
Two questions:
1)who would you replace him with
2)who's your favorite guitar player?

adam was starting to win me over with "lateralus" and then "10,000 days" came along...

None of this is worth getting butt hurt over..
Speaking of the new tool album, its seems maynard gave us more of what the rest of the band keeps saying in his latest interview. More of 'were writing, its coming along, but it will be ready when its ready'. What I thought was interesting was that he said 'we'. I might be misinterpreting this but, that sounds to me like maynard is being kept in the loop as to what the other three are doing. Maybe even giving his own input and ideas.
Anybody else get that feeling?

Yeah, I go the feeling that he's contributing but then I've second-guessed it too. Maybe he is just saying "we" meaning "Tool" and didn't want to say "they" because that would sould like he isn't even part of the process even though it may be true. It's hard to imagine him being an integral part right now with APC and Puscifer and maybe wine as well, but who knows.
I thought I read somewhere that Maynard said he wanted to contribute more to the writing process for the next album because 10,000 Days ended up being really hard to right lyrics for. Something like that, OR maybe he just realizes that 10kd didn't match up quality-wise with Tool's previous work and he doesn't want that to happen again.

his comment wasn't a big slight, if you play guitar and have ever tried to learn a Tool song you'd get the joke

I do play guitar and have learned most Tool songs. But I think that what Adam does is just his style. So I value that over "this riff sounds like this other riff". As I said before, Adam has always played stuff that gives a nod to other stuff. The most common thing people say is that Rosetta Stoned sounds like Third Eye. To me this makes sense since the songs are similar in theme.
When Adam Jones plays you know immediately that it's him. Which for me is the mark of a good player.

"gives a nod to other stuff" to me sounds like running out of technique. adam has never shown off his technique in his playing, but i cant just assume more dexterity is there either. its always seemed to me he focuses on manipulating and texturing the sound rather than learning more scales or playing faster to squeeze in more notes. what makes him good is the way his riffs sound when they play over a heavy thunking bass lines and awesome drum patterns. his art, the videos specifically, had a lot to do with me getting into tool in the first place. now that i think about it, he kinda ran out of art too so he "gives nods" to alex grey and whoever else.

thanks for the killer defense fellow Canadians. he just loves them fuckin' hammer-ons, eh?
it's not about that though, in all honesty, it's about him making some iconic riffs. Schism is almost entirely hammer-ons at 3-5 or 10-12 but it's still a distinct, recognizable riff that changes. Aenema is a bunch of hemiola'd hammer-ons but ditto for being recognizable.
what I'm saying is the riffs in 10kd aren't very notable. most of that album was just chugging, and even Jambi (don't get me wrong, I think it's a great song but...) was just chugging on the open D for a really sizable percentage of the whole song. The Pot's main riff is like 2 notes, palm muted, and even most of RS is a third eye/H rip off with an AWFUL solo meandering in the middle. The awful meandering solo plagues most of 10KD; it's in Jambi and Wings 2 as well.
Wings 1/2, Intension (despite it just being a sequel in feel and tone to disposition) and Right in Two are the most unique to me but their problems are:
wings 1/2 - guitar doesn't fit vocals. all the different movements are mashed together angularly. most of the song feels like a setup for maynard to sing over but the whole thing lacks cohesion between instruments and vocals
Intension - aside from feeling a bit borrowed, nothing else is wrong with it. probably the best song on the album
Right in Two - forgetting the godawful lyrics for now, the song doesn't get interesting until after the tabla part, which leaves a 9 minute song with about 3 minutes of worthwhile musicmanship.
there. now everyone pick that apart or just agree with it wholesale so I can feel better about myself.
