I dunno I mean a many people have mentioned there are different types of songs and it depends a lot on how you are feeling at the time. I am gonna do a little (verrrrrry loose) grouping to show you what I mean.
Third eye and Rossetta Stoned (may be triad but certainly FDO) really seem to be in their own class with such hard hitting acid-chaos for so long.
The Pot, Hooker with a Penis, 46 & 2, Prison Sex (I am not gonna list all these) seem to be their almost funky bass dominating the rythem.
Vicarious and the The Grude and Parabola all have that good 'ole metal/alternative first feel to them (although we know there is much more below).
Euology, The Patient, Intension, Right in Two all have the slow, tedious pace to them that has every listener being actively passive in their soaking in of some message.
Reflection, Lateralus, 10,000 days all seem to be peaks in the transcendtialness of their music. Long progressions and sonic climaxes that themselves are extremely long are all characterstic of these.
I love all of them in different ways and at different times. I don't know if I could tell you my favorite song, but my favorite kind are the last. At least, for now 10,000 days is blowing me away. I waited for the CD to come out so I could get the whole intended feel, and exactly a week later I have listened to the song almost 50 times and every time I am just as moved if not more. It is a profound catharsis. But as noted earlier, sometimes thats not what I need. Larchymology (or whatever it is) is a the pseudophilosophy the band used to say they represented (what they were a 'tool' for understand). And this pseudophilosophy sadi that crying was the best emotional realise and was spirtually theraputic. I think this theme is central in their music and I view that last group of songs as the feeling of spirtual ascension after catharsis.
Of course it is all opinion, but thats what you were asking for. :)

I enjoy singing along to The Pot as much as sex so that has to say something, now i think its time to try mixing it

Ok peeps, I've seen tool twice on the new tour, 15 times overall and you need to listen to the songs in concert to fully appreciate it.
1. Lateralus
2. Lost Keys, Rosetta Stoned
3. Third Eye
4. H.
5. The Pot
6. The Grudge
7. Vicarious
8. Prison Sex
9. Jambi
10. Aenema
Not a huge fan of the older stuff. I can't wait to hear live version of Lost Keys Rosetta Stoned again. I hope they keep playing Lateralus, that is the best song ever. I'll probably have to add Wings I / II and Right in two after hearing them in concert.

6. Stinkfist
7. Wings/10,000 Days
8. Prison Sex
9. The Patient
10. Right In Two
Tracks bumped off the list by new songs, in order of preference: Opiate, The Grudge, Flood

Hmm, this may be a tad bit out of order, but the first few songs are definitely accurate:
1.) Pushit (Live). Probably will always be #1.
2.) Third Eye (Live)
3.) The Grudge. Is actually kinda tied with #2.
4.) Disposition/Reflection/Triad
5.) H.
6.) Wings for Marie/10,000 Days
7.) 4o
8.) No Quarter
9.) Lateralus (/is)
10.) The Patient
Shortly followed by Aenema, The Pot, Jambi, Right in Two, Parabol/Parabola, Sober, Forty-Six & 2, Jimmy, Swamp Song, probably Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned. Most of the new stuff is too new to really categorize yet.

And you feel the need to tell us this why? I'm just stating the songs I consider to be my new favorites, and you use it as a platform to say something you've said who know's how many times in other threads.
Based on a lot of your posts here, I think you take joy in trying to annoy people.
And you haven't succeeded, with me at least. I'm just in awe of how childish it seems.
But that's OK. I get it, you don't like ambient stuff. If you are going to comment on my selections, though, there are other threads for that. This seems to me to be a thread about people discussing their favorite songs, not a thread for dissing their choices.

so what you're saying is you're surprised that everyone doesn't have the exact favorites as you? are you serious? what is your childhood trauma?

Jambi.
Ultimate tool song for me, just combines everything about tool i love; the twists, the combinations of vocals styles, the thumping guitar and way it combines with the vocals towards the end, the delicate/heavy solo bass lines, and perfect drum fills and sheer brute force heard at the start w/the bass.

Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned hit me right away. It is like a musically better third eye that is really funny and puts the phychedelic aspect of the band together for a while. Favoriote I can't say.
I can say that 10,000 is at least my 2nd favoriote album from tool. Time will have to tell if i like it more than I did Lateralus.

TOOL have never done anything that I would consider ambient.
But I still love those songs, just pointing out that I don't think ambient is the right word to describe them.

Jambi's my 2nd fave after Lateralus. Rosetta Stoned could possible be #3.

The point, which you missed, is that I like TooL as opposed to "ambient".
Go listen to moby if you want ambient

I think No Quarter is ambient. It sure creates a nice atmosphere for me when I listen to it.

No Quarter has a great riff that starts one minute into the song and continues throughout the entire song, different (and better) than a song that peaks in the last minute.
