We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'.
Neither the brave nor bold were writing the stories so,
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'.
My correction
Neither the brave nor bold will write as the stories told

I also seem to notice some other lyrics in the background of the first verse. It sounds like maynards voice but it also hard to discern. any ideas?

At the start of the bridge lyrics, I hear:
Blood like rain come down.
Drum on grave and ground.

Yeah thats what im getting... these are all different flavors of news reports
shot by his own son
woman poisoning her husband through his tea...
and dream just wouldnt make sense... in his sleep would... but then again news reports would have no idea she kissed her husband goodbye unless she was using heavy lipstick and it stuck to his forhead... or maybe the news crew was in the room catching it all as it unfolded. Otherwise good attempt. No sarcasm, no offense.

it does sound like drum. has anyone recognized 'empty haze' yet?
as in 'pull your head on out your empty haze and give a listen'
sometimes i think they have me on auto-ignore.

Didn't have the patience to read the whole discussion, but I have three suggestions (which have probably been made somewhere)-
'Pull your head on out your headpiece and give a listen...' (I really don't hear any 'hippie haze' or 'happy haze' there, those lines seem to long to be said there anyway.) This makes sense to me on the basis of the duality of faces/heads/states of mind that are mentioned in the song.
I think it's "Stare at the transmittal, sync to the death rattle"
The second bit could also be "sing to the death rattle" because of the ensuing "la la la's"
"Credulous, divest..." sounds right to me because there is definitely a dental sound at the end of credulous, and I don't think it's a T. Plus, this sounds as though he's addressing the credulous and telling them to divest their desire, which makes sense.
"Credulous at best" is not a bad option though, and also makes sense but that dental sound just sounds too clearly pronounced to have been unintended.
That's my two cents, which hopefully weren't too heavily borrowed from others.

It's a concensus at this point that it's either hippie haze or happy haze... and I'm positive that it's "hippie." I posted a link to an mp3 from a live show with the vocals EQd up and everything else EQd down. It shouldn't be too far from this page in the thread. Hippie haze... I'd bet on it.
But "Credulous, divest... " seems pretty good to me. Actually it's the best option I've seen yet.

I can't believe people are still debating this.
Of course its hippie.

Tell us where or WHERE did you get this from? Personal archive? Because, if you've got the entire song, or more bits and clips of others, those could serve as a comparison to what's on the 10,000 Days album. Because, although Reordian had me on his explanation, that crystal clear audio clip you provided from "Coachella" pretty much drove the last nail in the coffin for either "empty haze" or "happy haze" for me.
Lemme just paste that clip again for others:

Thanks...
My clip was intended to rule out "empty" for sure, and give evidence that it's "hippie" rather than "happy." There's a definite "h" sound at the beginning, which should eliminate "empty" from the options. Similarly, there is NO short "a" sound there... which rules out "happy."... leaving "hippie haze."
As for posting more... If I get a chance while I'm wading through all these VERY repetitive (and very tiring) suggestions and I come across something that can be settled from that recording, then I'll post it. Forgive me... I'm just a bit tired of it.

The verse starting at 6:34 where Maynard goes up another level are played in the background, starting at 2:22 (noticeable at 2:28) and again at 3:09
This is not immediately recognizable (no threads yet) because the volume varies from low to extremely low, but it sounds fuckin amazing.
The best track on 10000 Days just got better, and I would say now that it would even be in the top 5 of Lateralus.
This ismixed so perfectly that MJKs lead vocals are not only loud enough, but loud enough that you can slightly discern background vocals, whereas on most of the other tracks on 10000 Days, MJKs lead vocals have the volume of background vocals, when they are even there.
More evidence Vicarious was made around Lateralus, and not 4 years later.

You guys are retarded to think that Vicarious was made 4 years ago. The lyrics are clearly "new" Tool, and if you think they wrote music only to add lyrics on top of it 4 years later, then you have no idea how/why Tool writes music.

Thats exactly how Tool writes music, mainly because of APC / wine-making.

I thought it was APC that wrote music like that, and Tool always got together to write their music? Either way, for whatever reason, I just don't feel like Vicarious was written that far back. While it hints at Lateralus, it has clearly grown: much more prominent bass from Justin, less "technical" guitar by Adam similar to Lateralus, while also leaving a hint of his improvement with the ending (the ending is a style that we haven't really heard pre-10K days). But that's me.

actually you're wrong. i saw an interview with the band, and they don't actually start to work on the final version until maynard gets there. they might come up with some riffs when he's not there, but they said that each member contributes an equal share to the music.

The way "vicariously I, live while the whole world dies, much better you than I" is sung by Maynard in the final chorus (higher octave, higher pitch) is in the background of the previous chorus'.
Just listen starting 2:22 and then 3:09 to the background vocals.

To quote a ToolNavy member's signature...
"Damn my wine,
Damn my wine,
Damn my wine if it should compromise a tour,
If wines and weeds divide me, then I might as well be gone..."
(That's fucking hilarious and I just had to use it somewhere.)

I hear the "Vicariously I live while the whole..." lines at 2:29, not 2:22. At 2:22, that voice in the back ground is simply singing what Maynard is singing. Whether it's Maynard or not, I'm too dumb to say. (OK, ok, I don't know EVERYTHING about the band members. As in who sings, who doesn't.)
Same with 3:09.
It's just a complementary/back up thing. I have no idea what the correct term is, but they're the same line. It's a pretty nice effect.
Kudos on paying close attention, though.
