So, I've had an opportunity to hear the demo. I like it.
What I am really curious about is why there is no forum for discussion of this demo? Surely it's no more illicit a discussion than those regarding the rest of the albums... it was not a "leak" or some other type of no-no. Is this something that Tool has requested TDN suppress somewhat?
I realize that the demo tape was a "promo" item. I don't see any other promo items getting their own sections, so perhaps that's it then?
I'd like to suggest that the demo tape is worthy of separate discussion due to the unique nature of its content.

The songs are different versions than appear on the "proper" albums.

The songs "Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-Off", available as live recordings on the 'Opiate' EP, are not available as a "studio" recording. The 4-track recordings on the demo tape are the next best thing.

The band recorded this tape for distribution, not just for record execs and promoters, but for fans as well.

As far as I know, which admittedly might be less than some, the band has no objections regarding the fans owning or having heard the demo tape.
I know my opinion of the recording is pretty high, given that I've always wanted a non-live recording of 'Cold and Ugly' and that the early version of 'Sober' is actually quite stirring in its own way, but what I'd really like to read is others' opinions of this album.
I also want to know what 72826 means.

ive heard it. its ok. sound quality is poor, but given that its a demo, ill put up with it. I look at it as what it is. its not a CD, its just a litle tidbit if you will of what tool was, and how some songs have evolved [lyrical difference between versions in sober].
i think it's pretty cool, they should remaster it and rerelease it. no, really they should. here's why:
1. it's pretty neat. slight differences, and just the fact that it's them..younger. you can tell in Maynard's voice.
2. for all the Tool whores that will buy ANYTHING with the word "Tool" on it, including those way overpriced DVDs (which, admittedly, i bought).
see, fans are happy (something to hear), record label is happy (moneyyyy), and band is, well, i dunno. maybe they're embarrassed.
there isn't a 72826 forum because, well, why should there be a forum for every promo and demo ever? go to toolcollector.net, they've released a lot of neato promo things (man i really want the Schism digipack, among others), but no use really discussing em.

I used to have it on my comp, dont know what happened to the files though.

They arent selling those demo songs, so I believe its free trade like live songs...
But if a mod wants to remove the link, feel free.

the quality is crap, but it's kind of neat to hear it.

well, given that he also says "from the first EP", and Opiate was the first EP, released in 92, i think it's still valid as 92....he doesn't say "from the first demo" now does he? ;)

Not really important, but I did a search on ebay of 72826 to see if maybe an original cassette might happen to be there (it wasn't), and what comes up is a specific circular saw blade that looks just like the lateralus artwork thing. They named it 72826 Found it mildly amusing.
