Oh, also if anyone went to the after party at the Pumphouse, I'd like to know how it was. Would have killed to go, but alas I'm not 18.

The lasers from the seats were amazing, drawing spirals on the stage during Lateralus....

Amazing.....

to be honest the pics aren't that great - pretty hard conditions to shoot and only got the first song where none of the cool visuals/lights are on. anyway enough excuses :)
Are you kidding??? The pictures were GREAT! Thanks for sharing -enjoyed them all the way over here in Texas!

Re: 2007/01/24 - Sydney, AUS - Entertainment Centre

well id been waiting for this for a long time so i was quite amped and being my first concert and all might of had something to do with it! After arriving i was pretty dissapointed to find our seats were at the very back on the side (s34). but soon i realised it could be worse and at least i was there to experience tool live. The seats didnt fill up till 5-10 minutes before the show started at around 8.45pm. In the meantime the mexican wave went around a few times as something to do to pass the time. After a final toilet break before the show i could sense they were about to come on and there was a huge cheer as they did so. Stinkfist didnt leave the impression i thought it would but i think they were still fine tuning the sound as from then on it sounded very clear and crisp. Fortysix and two went by, then jambi really ignited the crowd with the massive artwork display being revealed at the beginning of the heavy section of the song. This is where the lighting was starting to be shown off in full with an impressive red aura covering the stage. I didnt know what to expect with schism but it really impressed me, expecially the fast sped up section. Having binoculars was awesome for seeing Danny tear it up on his huge kit. Rossetta stoned came on and i think the crowd werent really sure about it, as not many people knew the lyrics. It didnt work for me live as much as i had hoped but still an awesome example of the guys musicianship as it was incredibly tight. Danny's drum solo was a pleasure to watch and reminded me of triad like some others have mentioned. Swamp song was kind of a surprise as i think they were playing the start of a different song before they went into it. Turns out its a real rocker and i think the crowds reaction reflected that. During the short break before wings lighters were lit up everywhere which looked pretty neat. Lasers were used in wings and they added to the experience immensely with a circle intially being formed on the centre of the stage. lateralus stole the show for me and was amazing, with my eyes glued to danny for the outro. Vicarious was another great rocker and then aenima was the perfect way to end what was a near perfect performance. Good gear.

Bloody awesome show!

I waited for at least five years for this, and even though they didnt play the songs i was waiting for (H, the grudge, etc) it was still Tool and they would seriously blow anyone out of the water no matter what song they played. A surprise highlight was swamp song and it was just special how everyone joined together in aenima to sing for armageddon }=) HEHE

The atmosphere was electric, my mates were left speechless and hopefully we'll see em again soon!

PEACE

I know, a bit late, but here goes anyhow... That show was simply AMAZING!!! The sound in there was phenomenal; lights, lasers & visuals intense; the whole atmosphere was something else!!! I don't know about anyone else, but I loved every song - especially Rosetta Stoned! That just got me so amped! Tool exude energy and raw power, which the crowd feeds off! My only regret was, like all good things, it had to come to an end...

man, it was shit, but my mates and i stayed and got smashed. We were one of the first ones there and as soon as the proprietor saw the army of tool fans spewing out of the show, he slapped a $10 covercharge on the door. Needless to say the crowd dissipated. (But having said that, kudos to my girlfriend's old man who took us on an inner city pub crawl and boozed on at the pumphouse waiting for the concert to finish). I reckon there would have been about 50 ppl max there rocking out to the sweet sounds of Salival.

The only thing that pissed me off about this show was the emo kid who sat next to me and fell asleep. Man, somone else who really wanted to be there could have had his ticket.

To him, I quote the Skyhooks: 'Emo is a dirty word'.

Jesus christ. Absolutely fukin INSANE! Best concert ever. When stinkfist kicked in the crowd errupted like something ive never experienced, even in a metallica mosh. I LOVED how maynard pointed the mic to the crowd and made us sing the bit "Vicariously I, Live while the whole world dies" then him replying with "Much better you than I", I thought the message was very good.

I saw a lot of people in the stands just sitting down, which was disappointing. (at least until Aenima)

I remember at Rod Laver back in 2002 the entire building was on their feet.

Despite having a few hiccups that day with work and whatnot, and having a somewhat shitty day, I had an absolute blast.

Superb seats, excellent sound and AWESOME laser show, I was jiving throughout the whole thing.

WFM/10 000 Days gave me the shivers. It has never done that before.

yeah i know what you mean...my friends weren't really getting into it, they arent as big a fan as i am but it would of been better if everyone was on their feet instead of the few who were standing. im sure hoping for better seats next time i see them if i do.

Each to their own, but I was just surprised at the amount sitting, given the energy in the building.

What does sitting or standing have to do with peoples appreciation of the show? I loved every second of the show and probably sat for 70% of it. Does that somehow make me less of a fan?

Anyway, by standing you potentially upset anyone behind you, who actually may have wanted a seat so they can sit, or are unable to stand for 100+ minutes.

Not a big deal imo

Re: 2007/01/24 - Sydney, AUS - Entertainment Centre

Disappointing is probably the wrong word to use. It just struck me as odd because there was a good atmosphere yet so many people looked bored! But you know, these were mostly the first few rows of seats so they quite possibly were people who weren't too into the band at all (ie they got freebies through work or something)

I've sat for plenty of shows before but given the last big arena show I saw (2002) I was surprised at the amount sitting.

Did anyone else see the guy in the white lab coat behind Danny? Was he doing visuals? He had a laptop and was definatley doing something. He was the guy who walked out and wrote something down and gave it to Adam, he also said something to Maynard. Think this was just before the drum solo. He was there all night and didnt leave till well after Tool left the stage.

Yeah i saw him too...but i thought he was a 'techie'...with a lab coat to boot.

I read somewhere that Adam's girlfriend does the visuals. I dunno, that mixing desk was pretty huge.

people in the front few seats were probably the BIGGEST fans, like myself, who snapped up the decent seats, not freebies through work. people don't stand in the seats because, as someone has previously mentioned, if you wanted to stand for the whole thing, you would have just purchased GA tickets instead and not potentially annoyed other people. to say people were sitting because they aren't into the band or the energy of the show is ridiculous. if think you'll find a common thread here (and in future review posts of the sydney BDO and melbourne concerts) is the lack of energy comes right from maynard himself. although i enjoyed the concert and certain parts blew me away, the level of energy was certainly lacking compared to many previous concerts i've been to and having a 'front man' who looks like he would rather be elsewhere than on stage and actually have to SING, may have something to do with it.

Well, not always. Quite often at larger venues the better seats will be allocated to people who work for the venue/label/etc or go to companies who deal with the venue someone. speaking from experience, I got a front row seat for Tool in 2001 through the company my father was working for and I distinctly remember sitting in a group of people who obviously had little knowledge of the band. (Frustrating as those tickets could have gone to friends who missed out!)
Hence my thoughts that maybe those people were there because they could go, not because they really wanted to go.

Just compared to people around me at the back of the floor I was surprised that some people were looking a big sluggish nearby. You can sit and be into the band, but a lot of people looked like they were going to nod off in their seats. *shrug* anyway, each to their own. Actually knowing lots of Tool fans maybe they were all stoned! *JOKE*

Maynard's never really been a hugely energetic frontman anyway. he has improved from past tours, at least he wiggles around and waves his hat on stage now. lol. I always find festival performances from most major bands lacking anyway. something about the big stage and open air can turn even a great performance into eh.

Exactly, there is no "frontman" in tool, theyve tried to make this abundantly clear in many interviews, not to mention the obvious fact that thats why they have no "spotlight" member or someone at the front "leading" the band, theyre all equal parts of the music, and the stage represents the band, not the "lead singer" or "lead guitarist", balance is what tool does so well.

i agree with that and know there is no "front man" hence the quotation marks, but i think a few things showed that maynards voice and enthusiasm, was lacking slightly during the night, which resulted in an air of 'something missing'... the stage does clearly represent the band and so it should, but in my opinion it wasn't quite showing the 'equal parts of the music', or else maynard wouldn't have been completely over-shadowed by adam, justin and danny.

I didn't see anyone matching Camella's description in the mixing booth, but I did notice there were at least two video cameras recording from there....

I would like to have stood up for the whole sho too - but the people behind us got really cranky and I figured that they had a reasonable point. It didn't stop us totally rocking out to the best band in the world (IMO - of course).

Tool is more of an air drumming band than an air guitar band anyway, so in that light sitting down is much better option.

The only things about Maynard's performance that I was a little disappointed about (and I mean ever so little) was no scream mid-stinkfist as I have seen in the boots, no vicarious outro singing and the fact that Rosetta was way too distorted by the megaphone. But those are all minor quibbles, other than that I thought he was completely on song all night. The thing I love about tool is that they are all stars; through the night each one of them blew me away. I wanted to be in front of Adam because I play lots of tool on guitar but I would have been happy where-ever I was, each one of them are brilliant in their own right.

He was there all night and didnt leave till well after Tool left the stage.
All three of the backline techs wear lab coats. The one behind Danny is his drum tech, who has been with Tool for about 13 years (or so).
Not sure what he was doing with his PowerBook at that particular show, but sometimes he is playing Sudoku if the show is going well.
Adams tech and Justin's tech also wear the lab coats.

This was my first Tool concert and to sum it up in just two words: FUCKING AWESOME!!!! I was mesmerised from the moment I got through the door. The lighting and lasers were amazing. The only thing I really have to complain about is the wanker who sat next to me and his "dancing"... he nearly took off my head a million and one times.

Only 2 more sleeps till Melbourne!!!

This probably explains why Maynard had his back to the crowd a great deal of the show. Anyone notice that the setlist depicted on the JJJ website shows 'The Pot'? Someone else mentioned that Maynard was seen choking on a towel - perhaps he was'nt his usual self and hence the drum solo...

Speaking of which, anyone seen this?

I actually found that video quite amusing :) Goes to show hes abit of a perfectionist. In general though i find his voice is amazing to listen to and is really versatile. Interesting theory as to the reason behind the drum solo.

yeah, i mentioned the towel thing, drum solo thing, earlier.....he seemed to be a little off and i know people who saw various parts of the tool tour last year and since then, the shows this year...his voice just doesn't appear to be holding up as good...exactly why i thought he signalled for the drum solo, to have a break and then gave up on 'the pot'. ...
still, who the hell cares. i'd watch it all again in a heartbeat.

Yeh i agree with what people are saying, kinda feel sorry for the guy, you cant hold it against him, its not like a guitar or drum kit where u just get it fixed/replaced, vocal cords are a very sensitive instrument, must be such a frustration to be at its mercy.
