Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

Hi've seen tool 6 times and this was a a great show. I liked the theater but I didn't like the usher Nazis roaming around keeping people from getting high and keeping everyone in their seat. I could've done with out that but I didn't let that distract me from the ferocity that Tool attacked it's set list with. Great show....

yeah i mostly felt bad for my friend tho. He's the one that got the tickets and he took me as a guest and then HE ended up seating next to them. the only time they REALLY got to me was when they were obnoxiously screaming out during the slower meoldic parts and totally ruined the beauty of it. but yeah they werent the smartest guys.

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

The Set list was one song different from the Coachella Set list. The first song they played was the only difference compared to the Coachella festival. I had a much better location at Coachella; I was right on the bar in front of the stage, right below Danny Carey. My seats for the Oakland show were good considering the size of the venue, orchestra, row L. Still a phenomenal show.
The band appeared a very loose, not so tight, just enjoying themselves. Maynard's attempt at jokes and sarcasm well taken by the crowd. What’s with the cowboy hat and buckle? I guess the Ranch in Arizona is rubbing off on Maynard. Yee-haw!!
At the show in Oakland, I too saw Les Claypool. He was in a Red Jacket just slumming it with some fellow Tool fans. For the most part he went unnoticed and unbothered, when asked if he was indeed Les and if he played Bass, he replied, "yes I do, very well" Well greatness must be viewed and admired by greatness.
Till the arena tour in the early fall, or late summer. Tool is freaking awesome no matter when or where you happen upon them.

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

hello all,

I was unable to post for so long after the show due to work (not like the old days when I would quit a job to see them play if it conflicted). Anyway, another very special experience. This was my 9th show (4th small venue including such like berkeley for lateralus and reno at the end of lateralus tour). Must say I could never be dissapointed. Each show bears significant meaning. First show was Reno back in '98 at the livestock events center when I was into psycadellics heavily (that was the closest thing to a religious experience I've ever had). To bad to hear about the kids who couldn't handle their shit earlier on in the posts.

This was my wife's first tool show. I must admit she was never a huge fan *until* this show. We got together after Lateralus and while she knows every tool song (perhaps not by choice) on that night she became another "believer". After the show, she just HAD to read all of the lyric's and I could see the process take place, sort of like an awakening :).

$489 bucks for balcony seats and needless to say I would have easily paid more.

It especially became worth it when we met justin and got an autograph. I've been waiting *YEARS* for a chance to shake a hand or even wave high.

This is turning into an opinion on my night and not the show, so, sure a little rust and somewhat generic set list. But I look at it like seeing another aspect of the bigger picture of live experiences. For some (like my wife) this was a first show and they are in for a for more than a *TREAT* when the big show comes with all the bells and whistles and polished playing. For others who have followed them for some time now, it's a reminder that even though it is their own music it is challenging for them (being human and all) to reproduce that kind of depth and scope of brilliance live every time.

TOOL shows on acid or shrooms is *GUARANTEED* to be the best time of your life
and if you have the opportunity, then by all means. However, realize that you are
not the only one there and respect your neighbor. When at a show, I found it difficult (trippin' or not) to get rambunctious. I find myself so dumbfounded and awe struck its hard to even move, and have to remind myself to even cheer, it's so good.

Hope the crazy bastards at the oakland show don't sit by me this fall.

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

Bo4b and I had a debate but it turns out that it was the 9th show. Has it been 11 years? Jeez.
The setlist is already posted and is now pretty much etched in stone.
These guys come up with a bullet proof plan and really stick to it.
Once we arrived it was clear why the venue was chosen. I've lived in the SF bay area all of my life and have had the chance to see many shows at the paramount over the years. Not a 1 bad seat in the house. A few minutes after we sat down, the PA started to make a low rumble and our seats began to vibrate just enough for Bo4b and I to turn to each other and share a smile about what a nice little treat it was.
Lost Keys began and the house noise swelled to 11.
The band seemed pretty laid back. Bo4b noticed that Danny was representing with a Lakers shirt.
A friend commented the next day that Maynard reminded her of Travis Bickle.
I kept my expectations low going in to be fair to the guys and the fact that this was a warmup show. They did not dissapoint.
When Rosetta Stoned began I was glad to have heard the song before I saw it performed.
Couldn't make any sense of the opening lyrics (Tommy the Cat?) which was a bonus in that I was able to focus on how much the rest of the band was kicking my ass. Overjoyed that they put the song in the set. Great opener.
Stinkfist was pretty straight forward but they shredded 46&2. Double Bass kicks were thumping me pretty hard for most of the show.
The Pot and Jambi are pretty brutal live. I can't wait to see those again after the shows in Europe are done.
I found out that I really like Schism live much better than the studio edit but I guess that's a given.
Was only able to see Eon Blue/The Patient performed once before. Even with some hiccups this time ruled that ones ass.
Ow it's poor ass. :(
After Lateralus they gathered on Maynard's platform and spoke for a bit. I was imagining the conversation.
ADAM: Sorry about that one part
MAYNARD: Yeah why do we even bring you along anymore.

All in all it was a good show that Bo4b and I were quite happy to have seen.
The bigger show that comes around should have a different setlist and much better stage production.
I 'll see you all there.

NOTE: THIS IS IN NO WAY THE BAND'S FAULT. The band was awesome, and it probably would have been the best Tool show out of the five that I have seen. However, does anyone have any idea why someone would go to the trouble of buying tickets to this show (we all know how difficult it was) only to get pissed drunk and drop acid during it? Now, I have nothing against alcohol or drug use. To each their own. However, if you cannot handle yourself when you are under the influence maybe you shouldn't do it. We were on the floor in the rear orchestra section, and there were two idiot kids who dropped acid (or it may have been a speed-based ecstasy) as the band took the stage. For the entire show, these kids (one in particular) were just freaking out. Not in the good way, either. They were screaming for no reason all of the time, and were flailing around like idiots. They would go out into the aisle and try to mosh around, but were always confronted by the security. It came to a head about half way through 'Vicarious' when the screaming and aggression got really bad. During 'Sober' I had decided that since these two jackasses had already ruined the show for my brother and I, I was going to take the $150 I paid for my ticket out on their faces, so I had to use a good amount of self-control. Anyway, I went and got the same security guard and told him that he needed to remove them. While he was doing so, one of the kids told my brother to go fuck himself, and I almost exploded. I got into it with the kid, but he didn't do anything besides try to give me some half-assed 'hard' look. As the security guard was dragging him out, he said that he would meet me outside. I told him that I looked forward to it, but, surprise, he wasn't there after the show. I am usually a very laid back person, but I have never been as angry as I was last night. I wanted to rip that kid's mohawk off of his scalp.
i didn't notice anyone get kicked out. thankfully i didn't have this same issue where i was sitting, but there have been plenty of instances in the past, even at places where there was moshing.

after the band became popular to the point of headlining their own shows, rather than touring with Rollins Band and Lalapalooza (and thus, disassociating themselves with the alternative/grunge niche), they began attracting many metalheads who came to their shows simply to run around in a circle and hit each other. it's odd because their music actually became more complicated and "progressive" with their last two records, albeit still apparently metal enough to attract the jerks that ruined the concert for you.

I'm glad somebody else recognized Les at the show. It got me worried when I was asking the people around me if they knew who Les was and I kept getting "no" as their answer.

During the show, he was seated during the whole Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned opening. Seated but watching intently. He finally got up when they started Stinkfist. Throughout the show, it was like he was in a trance the way he was staring at the stage, nodding along with the songs every now and then.

Nice to know that he actually hung out with the fans for a bit.

Great show, my sixth. Everyone's talking about the band being rusty, but they seemed pretty polished from where I sat. Not sure about that cowboy hat Maynard had on, though....This was the first time I'd been on the right side facing the stage, and it was a great vantage point from which to watch Justin and Danny. Awesome show. Looking forward to as many stadium shows as I can manage when they return from Europe.

And to my left was a short, fat, late thirties to forty something metal/pseudo hippy chick... just the type of girl you'd expect to see swimming around in the sausage fiesta that is a small venue Tool show. We made some small talk before the band went on, and laughed a bit about my being escorted to the coat check by security for taking photos not once, but twice (that's another story all together) with my cell phone.
When she lit up a thumb sized bone during 'Lost Keys" I thought, "cool" maybe she'll smoke me out if I ask her nicely. I politely told her that I'd be happy to pay for her parking or buy her a drink for just a couple of pulls on her doobie, and gave her the sad puppy dog eyes and all. She blew me off like I was a vagrant on Market street begging for change. I couldn't believe it... it's not even like she was toking exotics or anything, it smelled like low grade commercial mexican swag to me... in the Bay Area no less. Pathetic, but whatever....
She paid $375 for her seat, so I shrugged it off with a smile.

plus made some great coin in the process... who could ask for anything more?
Tool wrote a song about people like you, it's called "Ticks & Leeches." Get a clue, dipshit. It's indicative of your fucked-up baseless sense of self-importance that you can come to the band's webboard, five of whose fans you shamelessly RAPED for your own greedy gain, and diss *me* because I didn't feel obligated to share my "low-grade schwag" with you. With all your gloating over the 5 tickets you scalped, why am I not surprised that you couldn't spend some of the "ridiculous amount of money" you made on a dub of purple.

We never discussed how much I paid for my ticket, and it's interesting how you have to make stuff up to feel superior. Someone who extorts money from true fans to inflate his ego is the definition of "pathetic." Enjoy your blood money.

hmm..... who sold 3 tickets at face value? Oh I know it was me. ( : Assholes who extort people for something they love have a special in karmaic return. I stood outisde the show before hand got in front of 3 scalpers and sold my last remaining ticket to a very greatfull girl (her first tool show) I ended up with one extra right before the show and rather then rape anyone, I sold it at face value. I sold one to a friend and one to somebody on here (toolnavy). All face value, I believe maynard said something about a virus he had in mind for you people......

Re: 2006/05/04 - Oakland, CA - Paramount Theatre

Greetings! Well, looks like I have had plenty of time to absorb and transcribe this show into a "review."

I hadn't seen Tool since '98 before this Oakland show last week. Worth the wait and worth the money the scalpers sucked from me. I think I would have died if they played Pushit, so thanks for not playing that because I am looking foward to the full tour later. I am a little regretfull that I didn't download the leak like everyone else seemed to have. When they opened with LK/Rosetta Stoned I felt very confused, like I didn't belong there. But now that I have the album and have digested it I can say that those songs and I get along much better now. I wish I would not have smoked any weed, because it put me in a really poor mood. The guy next to me kinda had a faint B.O. and I was wearing the wrong shoes to be standing all night. I sat down during most of Sober. I didn't want to hear that live anyhow. Then I felt like a douche, what with being the only one sitting down in the place, with a purse between my legs! I have personal regrets about this show.

The major one would be the parking situation. We parked in the garage behind the paramount and it seemed great at the time. After the show I had planned on hanging out in hopes of getting my 10k days album signed. We made it until 11:30 when a kind gentleman informed us that if we had a car parked in the aforementioned lot, that we had better move it because the place was soon to be locked up for the night. I asked my husband to move the car, pretty please. He declined. I continued to stand there for 10 more minutes like a moron. When I finally came to reality and headed toward the garage's stairwell, IT WAS LOCKED! I wanted kick my own ass at this point. Luckily, we got to our car in time.

There were about 5-10 other people loitering there when we left. If any one of you are on these boards, please let me know your outcome.

For me, Jambi and Lateralus were the best.

Did anyone from toolnavy meet up?!

REVIEW/ TOOL LIVE: OAKLAND 5/4/06

I was at the Oakland show on 5/4/06. I wanted to share my impressions of the show. It was great to not have an opening band. The lights went down, and Adam and Justin walk out onstage. I was hoping they would open with Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned, and they did! (may or may not be in perfect order)

Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned:
The feedback siren noise in the song is Justin doing some strange bass guitar magic. There was no Dr-Nurse-Patient talking. Slowly, Danny comes out, and then Maynard. He was wearing jeans, no shirt, and he had a mohawk. He had a megaphone strapped to his body and he was ready to rock. TOOL sounded amazing with this new material. Obviously, they are well-practiced with it considering they just recorded it. at 7:04 in the song, when the bass and drums lock and Adam does his triad-ish solo, it was amazing to see Justin's pistoning arm play the part with perfect ease, while he looked at the crowd of people before him. This song is Tool having a lot of fun. That's what RS really is about. By the way, Maynard spoke/sang this song almost perfect. He sounded just like the album.

Stinkfist:
Solid version of stinkfist, minus the extra jam in the middle they did on the last tour.

Jambi: Before the song Maynard said "Pee Wee's playhouse, always a good time". Maynard sang with complete conviction in this song. He seemed to really feel the lyrics of this one. By now, he was wearing a cowboy hat. The new material is perfect for the live situation.

46X2: Really good performance, especially from DC. The drum solo near the end was played seemingly at twice the volume of the rest of the band. I think he was trying to kill his drumset. Awesome. So far, songs from Aenima/10k sounding really good...

The Pot: Really fun live song. Maynard sang really really well. He can really belt out his vocals with these new songs. It was played a little fast, maybe just adrenaline and nerves, but it still totally rocked.

Schism: It was OK. Seemed almost out of place for a 3,000 seat theater with no major stage set-up. Almost sounded a tad sloppy. Schism is one of my favorite songs, and I was even a little bored. I think I just wanted to hear 10K stuff.

Eon blue Apocalypse/ The Patient: They play this song nice and slow. It has a really cool powerful vibe when they play this live. It sounded better than Schism for some reason. I think this song continually grows and gets better each year.

Sober: It's Sober. Not much to comment on here.

Lateralus: This is a great live song. They seem to "unite" on this one., like a giant Toolbot that suddenly becomes a massive force of power onstage. Anyways, this was the best sounding song from the Lateralus album.

--Maynard was saying goodnight and waving goodbye, but nobody was leaving the stage. Pretty funny.

Vicarious: Amazing. Vocally and Musically this song is a monster live. It is so powerful, heavy, creepy and just plain deadly. hahahaha. To watch DC on this one is a treat. Maynard has so many parts in this song, obviously this one is going to be a classic for them.

--the members sit on maynards riser and just kind of chill for a little bit, drinking water and talking to each other. i guess this is their idea of an encore. it was funny.

Aenema: Always good live. Maynard seemed to be having a blast singing the lyrics. I noticed that songs from Aenima & 10K sounded similar in style when played live. The albums feel like they are related in some way, and that is cool. I think 10K will only sound better on the arena tour.

Summary: Last time I had seen Tool in a small theater was in 1995, and that was back when they were playing half of Pushit combined with Disgustipated, and Maynard had just shaved his head. They haven't changed fundamentally since then. They are still just making amazing albums and busting them out live for people to see. When you stack 10K material with their other songs, you realize that it fits perfectly, and matches up just fine. I can't wait to see Wings/10K performed when they are in the arenas. Anyways, Tool is back in the fold, and they're just getting started. My prediction is that they will do a world tour, will come back take a break and make one more album, and one more tour, and then that will be it for TOOL.

Must agree that 10,000 days has a definate aenima connection, this is continually being revealed upon each listening. I have to disagree with the thought that tool only will produce one more composition of music, however I do see them releasing another recording sooner than in the past- with another album to follow several years after that. Just my inate feeling.. This band is built to last!
