Anyways... I'm really gettin' into creatin some raw synth stuff and I'm curious if other TDNers rock some synth vibes too?

What do you use? Trent Rexnor said he's gonna be using alot of Reaktor which is a sweet ass program that you can use to deisgn your own soft synths. It really got me hooked on synths. Super advanced and really powerful... I don't think my comp could handle the full verson especially since its sposed to be used as a VST plug-in once you've compiled a synth you like.

So, anyone got a cool synth or soft synth? Or some cool synth music you've made or any MIDI tracks... I wanna hear from the electronic musicians of TDN.

Haftelm - do you use all of those??? Do you have any thing that you've made using those synths?

I mainly use my Roland RS-9. It's mint, especially when you put it through some guitar effects pedals. Soft synths just seem shit for some reason. I'm thinking of making my own analogue piece of kit sometime soon, but I'll need to do a fair bit of research first.

Yeah, I've used them all. They are in the studio here at my school. I have done a few projects with them. I sampled a few Tool, APC, Deftones, random stuff, and White Zombie and did a little editing and MIDI/synth work. I can send you some if you want. Drop me a line on AIM - FourT6and 2

Have you ever used any good ones? I've used a Roland JV-1080 and some Yamaha synth module, and I'd rather use a softsynth any day. Of course, to effectively use a softsynth, it's ideal to have a dedicated softsynth computer.

Ya you can't just run a synth on your gaming PC and expect it to perform up to spec. Elevate what soft synth have you tried out? And do you run a dedicated DAW? Or just stuff on your own comp?

An EMS eh? is that the unit directly right of the Kaoss pad? Or is it in a different image?

Whats everyones opinion about soft synths vs hardware synths?

From what I have come to understand about the whole thing is that hardware synths, generally speaking are geared toward those that plan on performing live shows with their synth.

Obviously with soft synths it would be quite a hassle to lug your pc and set it up at a gig. Not to mention it looks highly unprofessional.

Soft synths though are far more adaptive then their hardware counter parts. The amount of deep editing you can do to patches with soft synths will just grow and grow in power as PC power increases. Proggys like Reaktor are breaking new ground for power in soft synthesis. You can design your own graintable synth from the ground up and then plug it into your favourite sequencer and your set.

Soft synth's seem to have a far great potential for power. But hardware synths put that power in your hands.

A hard synth is simply a soft synth that is in its own dedicated box.

The programming is the same and the functions/editability is the same.

Many manufaturers are making software versions of their hardware synths as well.

The coolest are hardware synths with PC deep editing... They combine the editing power of PC with the comvenience and portability of hardware synths...

Things like the Novation Kstation and Nord Modular are good examples of this.

I want a synthesizer, but all of the ones I've seen are expensive ($400 +), what is a real cheap synthesizer to start off with?

i own an sh32, i love it, great synth. sound is really good for gewtting it for 200$. good implementation. arp and drum sets. two oscilators, two lfo's. lowpass, band pass hi pass and some other filter. filter envelope. amp envelope. effects section. really great; many differnt waveforms for lfo and oscilator, and delay/reverb/chorus seperate from effects section. sound is digital, but really analog sounding in alot of ways, good for harsh sounds, good for smooth sounds, filters self oscilate :). just really good, i love it. its been my main synth since december.
