What I think Flood means.

My breakdown of Flood:

I think this song as a whole is representing him throwing off the ideas we are brought up on how the world works, and his trying to cope with these findings. I belive it runs along the same idea as later songs like third eye about seeing the real 'truth' behind things.

"Here comes the water."

--Here comes the 'purgeing' 'cleanseing' force that he mentions at the end of the song.

"All I knew and all I believed
are crumbling images
that no longer comfort me.
I scramble to reach higher ground,
some order and sanity,
or something to comfort me."

--Everything he was brought up on, conventional sense of what to belive (christianity maybe? the military maybe?) no longer comfort him, are crumbleing images, etc. And he searches for some higher ground, someth order and sanity or something thats real to comfort him

"So I take what is mine, and hold what is mine,
suffocate what is mine, and bury what's mine.
Soon the water will come
and claim what is mine.
I must leave it behind,
and climb to a new place now."

--So, he takes all these things he use to think mattered, all those conventional thoughts of what life means and is, and kills and buries them. Soon the cleanseing purgeing force of 'the water' will come to claim them. He has to leave all that behind and find something new.

"This ground is not the rock I thought it to be."

--The world is not the way he thought.

"Thought I was high, and free.
I thought I was there
divine destiny."

--He belived there was a higher power, a divine destiny, he thought he was free and high in his old state of being.

"I was wrong.
This changes everything."

--But he was wrong, and that changes everything.

"The water is rising up on me.
Thought the sun would come deliver me,
but the truth has come to punish me instead."

--The water is riseing, its cleanseing him and purgeing him, bringing him, he thought this would be the sun (alludeing to the heavens) coming to deliver him. But instead it is the truth of the way the world really is that has come to punish him. The punishment of the truth shows the harshness of the way things really are, and that they are not the candy coated notions we all like to think.

"The ground is breaking down right under me.
Cleanse and purge me
in the water."

--The world is crumbleing benieth his feet, its falling apart. He wants to be cleansed and purged in the water, he wants to see things as they really are. The song ultimately leaves me with the idea that even though the realization of truth is harsh, and possibly painful, he is ultimately better for it.

I think its a popular trend through many tool songs, that realization of the truth of the way the world around you is, is often a painful experince, but needs to be done, and makes you the better person for it. Its the casteing off of ignorance.

I hope that gives you the insight you were looking for, its my first real break down of a song on this message board. Tell me what you think, where you agree or disagree, criticism welcome.
