Sorry about the bump but I think this adds some credibility to this claim, if he's talking about Led Zep suing people for covering their music when they were covering blues standards and ripping off people left right and centre.

I never thought about Muddy Waters in the pot as the "Muddy Waters". Good observation. And as for the reverse echo thing, that wasn't invented by Jimmy Page, and that's not even what's happening on The Pot or Whole Lotta Love. Reverse Echo is an effect maynard likes to use on his voice in Reflection, and Zeppelin uses it on harmonica in When the Levee Breaks. The pre-echo you hear in Whole Lotta Love and The Pot is because Zep and Tool both used analog tape to record. The only difference being that Tool recorded the analog tape digitally afterwards. But they wanted that sound, and when Zep recorded with the same tape reel for multiple takes of the same song, the previous takes can be heard slightly off time in the background. It seems Tool honed this technique on purpose for the pot, I mean unless they just didn't notice.....yeah right.

Not just the Pot rivek-son, probably all of tools songs and albums, maybe not opiate I'm not sure. But adam said in an interview that they record to analog tape then record the tape digitally. maybe that's where the helium thing happened, not while they were recording themselves but when they re-recorded the tape to digital. Just guessing, but somewhere in that revolver mag adam says that the analog tape company went out of business so they were frantically searching all over for some tape reels and he has extra reels stored in a locked freezer somewhere for next time...

The reason for recording on Analog tape (in case you didn't know) is that recording digitally requires the computer to "Round off"... losing some of that warmth. Who knew that the Beatles method of recording would still be the best way to do it today...
It looks something like this...

This is completely off topic, but I can't figure out a better place to ask it.. Has anyone heard of Tool playing any new material live (similar to the way they played wings during the Lateralus Tour)?

now i realize i'm like three months late on this post...
at first i thought it just died with my silly comment...then i read the dates...
but, i prefer analog tape...sounds warmer...
and i thought this of the zeppelin idea...for some reason last night my mind kept coming back to robert johnson which lead to bo diddley...everyone borrows from them...
and i realize what i think doesn't really add up to anything anyway...
i picture bo diddley singing the pot to ed sullivan when i hear the song...

If you look it up on Wikipedia they have a pretty good explanation of the Kangaroo Hung Jury...It has something to do with a well know historical court case.... Maynard reads so much that it is often hard to figure what is is really singing about... I love this song and have always wondered just what he means by when you pissed all over my Black Kettle, you must have been High... I get that to piss on someones kettle you would more than likey be high, but is this a metaphor for something more? I'd really love to know.... I hope this info helps, Im really new to this fan forum thing......

Huh?
Eh....anyways, it's a reference to the phrase "the pot calling the kettle black" which in other words is saying "you're a hypocrite". That's what the black kettle referance is from but as far as exactly what he means by "pissed all over my black kettle", I'm guessing he's just saying not only are you being a hypocrite but you're adding insult to it as well...you musta' been high (or flat out stupid) to do some shit like that.

insaner I just want to say I'm sorry on the behalf of alot of people who've been giving you shit all this time about your theory. I didn't initially agree with your first post but as I kept reading you started getting specific with names found in lyrics to this song and references that could point to the fact that this song was indeed intended to be about Zeppelin being hypocrites by ripping off artists then suing artists years later for doing the exact same thing. I just want to say that while no one is going to know for sure what this song is about and to whom the message was intended for, I accept your theory as being potentially accurate and thank you for sharing this thought provoking insight with us.
