sometimes in salival (you lied, a few others) i can hear 2 guitars. is maynard playing? if so, he's pretty good!
no, that is the bass actually. it is just played on the higher strings so it sounds like two guitars. it's kinda like what they did on H. when the guitar played the main riff during the first verse and the bass played it on the second. it's a very cool technique and they pull it off seamlessly.
I've seen Maynard (Wilkes Barre Video) holding a guitar looking thing, except it didn't have an end part where the strings get tightened. Is that a synth or something because he definitely played it, otherwise he wouldn't hold it. I don't think it's a guitar but it's definitely something, anyone know what it is?
its a headless bass made by Steinberger http://www.musicyo.com/brandpos.asp?dept_id=3
he used to play bass for a band before Tool
I know he plays for Triad, and maybe Schism, some others...?
How the hell do you know it's a bass and not a guitar, I can't hear shit coming from it anyways so I couldn't tell. Are you sure it's a bass?
Haha, yeah I never would have guessed, but I think a while ago someone posted a concert photo of him with the bass, and it was clearly a bass.
Some live versions of Triad allow you to hear it much more clearly
ok, here's the deal. there are definitely two guitars on salival, one song i'm sure of is "you lied". in the beginning there is feedback from TWO separate instruments...they sound very similar because king buzzo is playing a very similar les paul (i've seen it in circa '96-'98 bootlegs). plus it lists him in the liner notes. maynard has recently been seen onstage in the past couple of tours with his headless guitar. this is the steinberger guitar, you can view it at www.musicyo.com. the nice thing about these guitars is that they *supposedly* never need to be retuned. they, although, require double balled strings. i actually was looking into getting one a while ago, but instead saved up to buy my les paul. they do make guitars and basses, but what maynard is using is definitely a guitar. i've seen him whip it out during triad, reflection, and schism the past couple times i've seen them live (5 times in just over 2 years). i hope this clears all questions about this subject.
as for "You Lied", yeah Buzz is playing the second guitar
Go to www.tooltabs.net
then check out the guitar tab for You Lied, and the bass tab for Triad
Those show every place where Buzz plays guitar(pretty much the entire song)
Maybe maynard plays guitar for Schism and others, while he plays bass for Triad...lots of people can play bass and guitar...theyre very similar
If anyone can find that pic of maynard actually playing the Steinberger headless bass (or guitar!), please post it
I'm relatively sure it looked like this http://www.musicyo.com/product_specs.asp?pf_id=191
...Thats pretty freakin' cool that you don't ever have to retune the strings, I wonder how it works?

When they (rarely) play No Quarter live, is that acoustic guitar still there? Seriously what the hell is Maynard playing, and what band did he play bass for before Tool, are you sure you're not mistaking Adam who played bass before Tool? CHRIS BRIGHTWELL TO THE RESCUE, maybe he can help us out a bit more.

Peace oot, UA
Only one guitar on No Quarter live.
Maynard is playing a Steinberger bass on "Schism" and "Triad" live, (or at least wearing one on Schism). I'm having a hard time figuring out where in the song he's playing something.
And yes, Maynard played bass in a band called TexANS, before Tool.
Well...l do know that Maynard plays the guitar. He was playing last time they came to San Antonio.
