my scanner isn't working, so here's the gist. Both tremolo and vibrato mean different things depending on the instrument. Tremolo was once used to refer to a rapid repetition of a pitch by a singer, but this technique has fallen into disuse and therefore so has the meaning. Now, tremolo is used to refer to excessive and unpleasant vibrato from a singer.
So. I was wrong in my over-simplified definitions of the terms, and you were wrong in saying that tremolo is not applicable to voice. Truce, and end this musical pissing contests?
-- Funnily enough, the way it was originally used most closely mirrors its proper usage.

Yeah that sounds about right. Its a truce.. sorry Im just stressed about my theory final. I REALLY am

Man, why are you trying to be a smartass over the internet?? Who the hell cares? Winning an online argument is like winning the special olympics: you're still retarded. Why not focus your energy on something more productive than arguing over tremello and vibrato? They both mean the same thing and are just intended for one or the other. The point is that you understood what she meant. There is no point in arguing over something so trivial.
*sorry, I missed the truce...

I won't have these childish "internet arguments" in my thread.
Just post your damn attempts and comment. Simple.
... and some of you blew my attempt out of the water. Well done.

It's all good.
I'd like everyone to just stick with the subject at hand if at all possible.
Edit: I know there's a lot more people out there with microphones. Pussies.

He sure sounded dead on singing it at the shows....
I've heard his voice crack and go off pitch live too, I know that his voice isn't just layed and fix up live. The only effects they do use they do so diliberately and you can easily tell.

When referring to vocals, its vibrato, not tremolo. Tremolo is more commonly used on modern string instruments.
He did a fine job on his rendition... The goal isnt necessarily to "sound like Maynard", you know...
And don't bother arguing, because I'm a Vocal Music Major, and I do know my stuff.

You don't have to be a dick. I knew there was a better word but I used one that was close enough. I think you knew what I meant. And the goal was to sing the intro. Maynard, to my ears, didn't use that much vibrato (thanks for the correction).
By the way, I wasn't chastising the guy. I think he did a great job. I think I even said that. Get off your high-horse man.

Yeah I said they were the same thing, just pertaining to different instruments...
Its over with. Our differences were subtle, and we agreed on a medium. No big deal.

This thread has revealed that systolic is not only a ***got on the forums, but also sounds like one. I wish people like this were banned.
On another note I think it will be interesting to revisit this thread in 3 years..

It won't let me link directly, but it's the only thing on the page.
Far from perfect, but it's hard to sing something so intricate so fast. Hence, mine's too slow (with a couple of bad notes thrown in for good measure).

Thanks :) Had to sing in a semi-US accent though - otherwise it'd have sounded odd, e.g. 'glarse' instead of 'glaaass' and there's a different emphasis on words like 'waters' and 'burn'.

I'll do a slower version at some point (after your exams ;) ) in my 'real' voice.
Oh, and while I've actually got someone listening to me - I put a link to my 'mjk' song in the 'creative' forum - it's only on myspace I'm afraid, but I'd love to hear what Tool fans think of it.

I think the best renditions so far are tyrith's and neognosis'. You guys have really good voices.
When I find time I'll record my own. I took 5 years of singing lessons back when I was a student, so be afraid... be very afraid...
(well not really :-p)
