Thought that at first too, but then I started hearing "benched along" like everyone else. Now I'm not so sure.

Seems it would be "benched along with" because of the mention of the sidelines in the line before. The metaphor follows.
You know, being benched and relegated to the sideline?

True but, he's also not talking about a baseball game here. Blessed makes better sense I think.

But there aren't enough syllables for it to be "blessed with patience and reason," there's the word "along" after the first word (or something else with two syllables, for those of you who oppose the idea of "benched along"). Although he's not talking about a baseball game, he is talking about the angels being on the sideline and not having the ability to take action; much like in sports, right?
I still think it's "benched along..."

This is one of my favorite lines of the whole album. I think it's clever.

Right, he's not talking about a baseball game, but he's using a sports-ish metaphor to describe the whole situation. They're on the sideline, they have been throughout the whole song. It's a recurring theme. Clearly the monkeys are aborting patience and reason, relegating them to the sideline, along with those angels who've been sitting there, shaking their heads for so long.
That's how I feel about it. Whatever the lyrics "actually" are, I'll always love this song. It gave me chills the first time I heard it, and it still does.

Somewhere else, by leafnaspleef, it was mentioned that to comprehend a stereoscopic lens, one would have to look through the picture.
think about that next time you (anyone) think(s) of making a post like this.
I am sure, if there is a God, it would smile.

I've always believed it's "Picture love with patience and reason." As in there are angels on the sideline that can only picture love with patience and reason while watching and wondering when the tug-of-war will end.
The whole sentence works well also. "Angels on the sideline agian picture love with patience and reason." He says "again" beacause he's said it twice already. This line is the climax. I've even clarified it to the point of dumbing it down saying "Angels on the sideline ARE PICTURING love with patience and reason but unfortunately to no avail." just to get my point across. People say "That doesn't make any sense!" and it confounds me. He says angels on the sideline a couple of times, and it makes sense for him to say "again." The whole sentence sums up the message of the song rather well. "ANGELS ON THE SIDELINE (again) PICTURE LOVE WITH PATIENCE AND REASON." This is really what I believe he's saying.

That's what I always thought. I had heard the 'benched along' one like everyone else but I was more inclined to agree with the been-so-long one, as in they have been waiting patiently, and have been reasonable, giving us countless second chances and whatnot.

And when the hell is Maynard going to release another song's "official lyrics" it's been a long time since he has. I say we blow up his email bin with requests until he gives in and releases one or two,, like Jambi and Right In Two....it's be nice to know what the fuck that voice in Vigenti Tres says too. Ok, now all we need is his direct email?

Well let us remember, that it took years for the official Undertow lyrics to come out. Be patient, young grasshopper. Now, I use that term loosely, since you're older than I am.

I hear "angels on the sideline again." Again sounds as if he's saying it like they''ve always been on the sidelines "benched along with patience and reason." The monkeys aren't using patience or reason to solve thier problems they'd rather kill their brother, instead of putting in patience or reason into the game.

well again, i took the .WMA lossless file, threw it in adobe audition....cleaned it up some, extracted center channel, took out as much music as i could, and boosted the vocals frequency. even with all that, its still hard to tell....its sounds like he says ' "bitch" along with patience and reason'....and since that doesnt make alot of sense....and the next word that is phonemically similar would be "bench". i mean simply changing the pitch of the phoneme "e" would make the sound like the phoneme "i". this pitch change could happen if a note of music is played at the same time as the word is being said. the resultant would be the addition of the 2 pitches (the pitch of the note, and the pitch of the phoneme), as is what happens in physics with all waves, and sound is a wave. i firmly believe that the digital analysis of the music + the metaphorical/allegorical applications if the word is bench = in fact that word is probably bench.

"benched along with patience and reason" makes sense. The angels, patience, and reason are all sitting next to each other on the sideline.

I'm almost positive it's "benched along with....". I used to hear "been so long with..." till I turned it up really loud to listen. Then I heard "benched along with..." clear as day.

Benched along and been so long,.. same meaning, phonetics; either way it works.. i think it's ambiguous enough to be both. And why not, he switches lyrics all the time.

uh, idk, i think im going to have to disagree with that 1. i dont think they are the same metaphor for 1, and 2, the setence doesnt really make sense as "been so long with patience and reason". it just doesnt sound right, even in context. angels on the sideline again, been so long with patience and reason. say that outloud, its speech doesnt sound right. now say, angels on the sideline again, benched along with patience and reason. much better.

The standard set of lyrics would be the ones recorded on the albums (to me, anyway).

Seeing as those are the ones were arguing about, I'd agree. Personally, I just disregard any live shows, because he changes them up, and we'd spend ages arguing if we included those shows. We'll probably spend ages arguing as it is.....

More like don't listen to live lyrics if your trying to figure out the lyrics on the album.

i spent about 2 hours digitally reworking this song....that is what came out of it...if the file wasnt like 300 meg's i'd upload it for everyone....but most people wouldnt take the time to DL a 300 meg file. you can say its just my opinion, but 4 other people i had listen to it came up with the same opinion....so it was a consensus here. if u still dont care....thats ok cuz its your prerogative.
