Tool has changed and some people can't seem to deal with it. The album rocks. Bahhhh!
I wonder if they could pull off Rossetta Stoned live?

Liking 10,000 Days does not = TOOL fanboy.
Most of my friends that, like myself, have been into TOOL since '92 or '93 didn't care that much for Lateralus. We criticized it but still enjoyed the band. To most of us, 10,000 Days seems to be a grand return to form. It's not the same as their previous records but it seems to capture the TOOL that we remember and enjoyed so much, pre-Lateralus.
So if this record means that, even in some little way, the TOOL fan community (not that much of that exists anymore) can go back to having a resemblance of what it had before all these humorously immature Lateralus-bandwagon fans jumped aboard, so be it. We won't miss you buying up our tickets.

Well considering it is just a bunch of their old songs put together, why would they need to?

I'm just pointing out the irony of needing to find others who feel the same about this album, while calling others sheep.

It is very interesting to me how no one can agree on this album..
I am a fellow Lateralus hater.
I love Opiate, Undertow and Aenima.
..However 10,000 Days makes me sick. It is so bad, it actually makes Lateralus sound better to me!

Yeah man, it is odd. I've gotten 10 quality years pleasure of listening to Aenima, 5 with Lateralus. Both are incredible, both have bought me so much joy and wonder for this lengthy period.
I'll get years out of a few tracks on 10KD, but unless some strange epiphany hits me, I sadly doubt i'll play the album start to finish again. Bugger hey.

What if find interesting is, for one time, fans complain about the fact that a band didn't change his sound enough...it is interesting because, very often, fans complain about the fact that a band has been too experimental, "dared" too much maybe...but this time, it seems that TOOL didn't dare, if lateralus and 10.000 days would have been a reunited in a double album, it would have been a real masterpiece...but...God it's very hard to admmit you cannot be able to like an album from a band you deeply love....I love all their albums from opiate to lateralus, each one of them, from the first song to the last, with the interlude...but..10.000 days......I cannot feel this flame...I try..I listen.....with headphones.....alone......on a armchair...and no.....something in the building of the songs is lame.....it doesn't have this "I finally understand the song building" thing....like if the builder wasn't sure hisself of what he did ....it's not even criticizing because I'm really sad of this...i feel like I'm maybe wrong...maybe it's me who doesn't undertsand the band anymore....but it's the first time I'm sad and not angry to be disapointed by an album....

i believe you, and it makes me sad. youre the first one ive seen who doesnt like it who was open and positive (if thats possible) i say keep listening, but its kinda alien to me because at first listen i knew it was special to me. all i can hope is that it gets better for you like Ænima had to do for me, as that is my favorite album of all time by any band.

i believe you, and it makes me sad. youre the first one ive seen who doesnt like it who was open and positive (if thats possible) i say keep listening, but its kinda alien to me because at first listen i knew it was special to me. all i can hope is that it gets better for you like Ænima had to do for me, as that is my favorite album of all time by any band.

The first? I am glad you understand how some of us are pretty bummed by the album and honestly can't find the magic in it. But on the flipside, it's really ace you guys are blown away by it. And i'm jealous because I want that feeling myself.

Just to counter---should I be pointing out the fact that you only made a reference to one real song? Hey, Tool shared the beauty of the word "Vicarious" with me (you're so right!)...Have you ever heard of the word "flippant"? No, not the dolphin...How about "Irony"? "Sarcasm"?
Good job with your analysis of the lyrics of SEGUES. I'm impressed. What's your interpretation of Ions? Please, I'm dying to know how long it took you to think up your graduate thesis on the lyrical value of the voices on the TV on The Wall.
Seriousness aside: You caught me. I have no mastery of the English language whatsoever. As a matter of fact, I'm Japanese. And dyslexic. I sure didn't know the meaning of Vicarious before this album...but I can put it into quick application now. Thanks to your post, I have VICARIOUSLY experienced what it is to think like a dumb ass.

In my heart that is how I feel. I was seriously depressed from this album. Then I became angry. Tool owed nothing to me. I just kept listening cause I was engaged by their music. 10k Days, just doesn't do it. This album just won't get much play time, that's all. Did they seriously run out of magic?

He may not have lived the life that she lived, but has never 'lived a lie" or never "took a life", and only wants to be reunited with his lost mother when the time comes. It's a eulogy and a prayer all in one. One of the most touching songs I've ever heard in my life. Everyone who has been saying that they are dissappointed in this album because it's all about the MUSIC, it doesn't ROCK enough for them, or whatever.... they are certainly right about one thing.. It IS about the music, and this is the music that Tool has created for themselves. Not for anyone else. If they were in this to create fans, they wouldn't produce a record only every 5 years. it's about getting together and expressing the things that have happened to them. The things that have taken place in the world since time has passed. These are the lyrics that Maynard has chosen to speak, to vent. These are the chords the Adam Jones has decided to play, etc etc. It what makes THEM happy. That's what music is about. If other people like it, it's only an added bonus.

well gues what. i DONT like the song 10,000 days for the exact reason you discussed. what made me fall in love with tool in the first place was the amazing complexity and deepness to the lyrics. these lyrics are not complex. they are not deep. they are totally straight forward. just like nearly every other song on the album. the lyrics are way more APC'ish than Tool'ish. not to mention maynard is talking about how his mother deserves to go to heaven? wtf is this. go to heaven? lots of his songs are against the concepts of organized religion.... he blatantly uses concepts of heaven and god and whatnot in this song (and in right in two) and you know what? i HATE IT.
there are WAY too many christian metaphors on this album for me to enjoy. do i hate the whole thing? no. jambi is fucking amazing. the pot is fun and entertaining as is rosetta. i dont know it just pisses me off i waited 5 years for this... all of their other albums had songs that were so deep and up to interpretation... this doesnt

I have waited so damn long for the new Tool album and it's basically crap. OK well not crap, but not a decent follow up at all. For Tool being one of my favorite bands ever, they sure as fuck let me, and thousands of others, down with this one. It jams but it's shit compared to Lateralus, and I now feel I have heard it enough to say this with confidence. I mean, it just came out (not even out in stores yet) and already I find myself jamming Aenima more than 10,000 Days. To me it looks like they spent more time on the fucking packaging, making it with glasses and stereoscopic. They spent so much time on this in fact that they didn't realize they were re-using and over-using much of Alex Grey's artwork, like art that has been in the band's previous videos and tour backdrops and shit? At least with Lateralus, Alex Grey created something new and original and badass. Here, for this one, lets use the same paintings that were done in the early-mid nineties. Great way to follow up Lateralus' art. Perhaps whichever mind expanding drugs they are trying these days are no good. Perhaps they wrote it sober.
Tool was the most original band in the world 5 years ago. Now, I don't have 1 good thing to say except way to go on making about 3 good songs in 5 years, and wasting the fuck out of 5 minutes of your album by putting some wind-type noise as the last track. Good way to follow up a masterpeice.
(I don't hate TTD but it's not up to Tool par in the least bit. I am most def dissapointed but I will still listen to it at times.)

OK well everyone's got opinions.
And I thought the opposite, thought Lateralus was one of the best albums of all time hands down. Even got the eyes tattooed on me. No fucking way will I get Web Of Being tattooed on me, that'd be overusing it even more.

Normally, I'd respond - if at all - with a dispassionate reply that's respectful and sticks to areas of objective agreement, ending with something like "That's fine if you feel that way; I disagree." We're all entitled to our opinions, especially in the midst of change.
However, it's getting harder to do that each time I read the same talking points again and again. So, I'll just cut to the chase: You're an idiot.
